LBJ Fountain

[LBJ Fountain]

'Took this photo a couple of weeks ago...the same day I took the photo of the squirrel. They're doing a lot of construction outside the LBJ Library. If you look closely, near the ramp leading to the Library plaza, you can see some chain link fence.

Periwinkle blue

[Blue flowers]

'Took this photo at the Spoff house on Sunday. Some sort of phlox, I think. Perhaps some Sweet William? Gorgeous, eh?

UPDATE. Regina emailed that this is likely a Plumbago. And, as soon as I read that I realized she's right!

Hanging out

[Road work]

The Z-Man went to sleep-away band camp a couple of weeks ago at UT. After watching his concert (very enjoyable!) at the Bates Recital Hall, I took the long way back to my car and snapped a few photos. Some of those photos had squirrels as their subject matter.

Road Work

[Road work]

End road work. Ummm. Nevermind. We've got more road work for you.

FYI, this is not a set-up. Those are real signs on 32nd Street. They have matching twins for traffic traveling in the other direction. Amazing. Don't you just love it? I drove past them on 3 or 4 different days before I finally decided that I had to record 'em for posterity.

Happy Father's Day!

Jennie was out of town last weekend so Mom and Dad took care of the critters while she was gone. Here they are...

Dumb (aka Snuggles):

And, Dumber (aka Romeo):

Look at that mug. He'd been eating dirt! What a goober.

Yellow belly! (#3 in a series)

[Yellow-bellied bird]

This is, apparently, #3 in a series (see also #1 and #2). I think I like this one best. Usually, I see these guys perched on the line in the evening when I get home from work. So, I pull into my garage, get out of the car, take a shot or two, and then try to get closer in order to get a better shot. And, they fly away. I managed to get closer today by shooting from inside my car. As long as I was in the car, he (she?) just didn't care. For fun, after taking a couple of shots, I slowly got out of the car and he (she?) quickly flew over about 20 feet. Heh.

I don't know why these birds hang out on the power lines behind my house but they do. Those yellow bellies sure do catch my eye when I glance up. A couple of days ago I saw one madly chasing a yellow butterfly. That was a lot of yellow flashing in the sky!

UPDATE. Dad did some searching through one of his bird books and has decided (and I tend to agree with him after seeing a few photos) that this is very likely a Western Kingbird.

Small orange flower

I've been looking at a couple of bushes that are flowering near the parking garage at work. They have these little tiny blossoms...maybe 1/2 inch across. They look kind of like little tiny unopened rose buds. And, they have little pistils (is that the right word?) that stick up (again, 1/2 inch or so) out of the middle of the bud. Here's one:

[Orange flower]

Any idea what in the world that is?

By the way, I had the hardest time trying to get a decent photo of these flowers. I took photos on 3 or 4 different days before I finally got one I liked.

UPDATE. Regina wrote to ask if it's a Turk's Cap. 'Never heard of such a thing but after looking at photos of Turk's Caps on the web, there's little doubt that this odd little flower is, indeed, a Turk's Cap. Thanks, Regina!

On my way to Bastrop on Sunday, I pulled over and took some photos of sunflowers. I was driving down 969 as usual...

Wild turkey

Not the bourbon...

[Wild turkey]

I was visiting the folks yesterday and Dad came into the living room from the porch telling me to get my camera. There was a turkey hanging out back behind the house! So, I grabbed my camera. Alas, the light was not cooperative. I bumped the ISO up to 400 but the photos were still blurry. And, the gobbler would not cooperate. He quickly left the area. About 20 minutes later, I saw that he'd returned. So, I bumped the ISO up even further...to 1600...and went out again. And, again, he decided he'd rather not have anything to do with me. He took off. I followed for a bit and caught a couple of "eh" photos when he got near the road. That was the most light I was gonna get. There's lots of noise in 'em (remember the 1600 ISO) but if I don't zoom in too far, not bad for the web.

'Just makes me want to spend a bunch of money on something like this. (Amazon is currently selling that lens for $4700, fyi, so that idea is nothing more than random silliness.)

I spotted this winecup in the flower bed at the Mear house. A winecup that had rather lost its cuppiness. So to speak. Here's the question: is that more purple or more magenta in color? Whichever it is, it sure is purty, eh?
