Alumni note: Drew Stubbs called up
Drew Stubbs was called up by the Reds on Wednesday...marking his Major League debut. He got his first hit that night (a double down the rf line). On Thursday? Walk-off homerun to win the game. Heh. How 'bout that? He made a nice leaping catch in Friday's game in Pittsburgh. 'Caught the ball just as it was headed over the fence:
'Grabbed the screen cap off the video attached to this story about his adjustment to the Majors. The article talks about his defensive skills. Whenever I think of Drew and defense, I remember that play against Baylor that left Reid Brees standing in stunned disbelief as he turned into the second out of a double play on a ball to shallow cf that no-way no-how should've been caught. But, Drew caught it. Brees, who'd been at 2b when the ball was hit was already well around 3b and headed home when Drew made a diving catch and then tossed the ball to 2b for an easy double play. That memory always makes me smile.

I just finished updating my 2009 MLB Draft Summary page with the latest news on signings. Austin Wood signed with the Tigers about two weeks ago but isn't yet listed on any minor league roster. And, Jacob Cowan (Texas signee, rhp, San Jacinto JC) signed with Baltimore and is playing for the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Class A short-season New York-Penn league). Cowan is the only Texas signee (of 9 that were drafted) that's signed with a pro team so far.
UPDATE: Oops. I updated the summary page but didn't upload it. That oversight has been corrected. Sorry 'bout that.
UPDATE #2 (early Aug. 8): I just saw that UT signee Colton Cain, lhp, from Waxahachie (8th round pick by the Pirates) has signed with the Pirates. His bonus? $1.125M. That's about 1 million dollars above slot. Wow. No surprise that he won't be sporting Burnt Orange and White in the fall with a bonus like that, eh? Too bad for us. But, doubtlessly good for him.
UPDATE #3 (Aug. 16): Brandon Belt signed with the Giants ($200,000 bonus) a couple of days ago. Still no news on signee Everett Williams. Tomorrow (Aug. 17) is the signing deadline.
UPDATE #3 (Aug. 19): Sorry for the delay. I've been too busy the last couple of days to check on baseball stuff. At any rate, the Padres did come to an agreement with Everett Williams ($775K signing bonus) so he will not be playing for the Horns.
