Fall practice

The Horns started Fall practice yesterday. 'Looks like they're gonna give Kevin Keyes a shot at 1b. I think I like that idea and I hope it works out. They've got two fall scrimmages scheduled: Baylor on October 4th and Texas State on November 1st. Both dates are Sundays and start times are listed at 1 o'clock. The scrimmages are free and open to the public. See the linked press release for more info.

Scott Bryant to Longhorn Hall of Honor

Scott Bryant will be inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor this fall. Congrats, Scott. I'm actually going to a football game this year so I hope he'll be recognized at the Kansas game in November!

David Hernandez update

'Got some great news via email today: David Hernandez signed with the Colorado Rockies and is playing for the Casper Ghosts minor league team in Wyoming. A few links:

Here's a photo I took last fall of David scoring in the scrimmage against Texas State:

[David Hernandez]

I took a quick trip back through my archives and one of the games against the Alabama A&M in the spring of 2008 jumped out at me wherein David went 3-for-4 with a double, a homerun, 2 runs scored, and 4 batted in.

Good luck, David! (And, thanks to Jerome King for sending me the news to share with y'all.)

They've only got two fall games scheduled this year...as opposed to four played last year. Teams can play up to 56 games a year. We ended up one game short of the limit last year (51 games in the regular season and 4 in the fall; a non-conference game against Baylor early in the spring was rained out and never rescheduled). With only 52 games scheduled last spring, it proved difficult getting to the magic number of 40 wins last season. This year, we'll have 2 more games to work with. Note that fall games count toward game limits but not toward the official record. We've only got two games scheduled against Rice this year. I'm guessing one of the Astros College Classic games will likely be played against Rice, though. And, one 4-game series scheduled with Iowa. Interesting. We had two 4-game series last year (Illinois-Chicago and Penn State).

By the way, I'm sure it's all subject to change.

Hook 'em!
