Game 46: Prairie View A&M at Texas
The Horns beat the Panthers of Prairie View A&M 6-0 this evening, improving their record to 39-7 and their winning streak to 21 games. Benjamin Blackburn, sporting an amazing head of hair, took the loss for the Panthers. He did a good job, throwing a complete game. When Cohl Walla dropped a lead-off single into lf in the first inning, I thought it was gonna be a blow-out. But, not so. The line...

Sam Stafford started for Texas and pitched into the 5th inning. Kendal Carrillo then pitched through the 8th. He started things off by setting down 8 batters in-a-row before giving up a single. Then? Double play and ground out. Nice. Carrillo earned the win, improving his record to 3-0. And, Hoby Milner threw a perfect 9th. I sure am enjoying our pitching this year. It's pretty special.
On the offensive side of things, the guys were struggling a bit to get their bats on whatever it was that Blackburn was throwing over the plate. But, Russell Moldenhauer managed a 3-run homerun in the 6th to the opposite field and Kevin Lusson hit a line-drive 2-run shot over the rf fence in the 8th to put the game away. I didn't think Moldenhauer's ball was gonna make it over the fence...it was hit sooooooooo high. But, it did clear the fence and dropped into the PVAMU bullpen. Then, Lusson's homer? It didn't seem to get more than about 20 feet off the ground...it was a bullet! I wasn't convinced it would clear the fence either...it was hit on such a line. But, over the fence it went. Cool.

- Sam Stafford (lhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Brandon Brooks (cf) struck out swinging (3 pitches).
- Andre Oliver (ss) also struck out swinging (he also saw a couple of balls, though).
- giovanni Angel (3b) grounded out to 3b on a slow high-bouncer.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Benjamin Blackburn (rhp) on the mound for PVAMU.
- Cohl Walla (lf) lined a single into lf.
- Brandon Loy (ss) struck out swinging (2-2 pitch). On the K, Walla stole 2b.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) grounded out to 3b (3-1, p covered bag), moving Walla to 3b.
- Cameron Rupp (c) grounded out to the pitcher.
- 2nd inning, PVAMU
- Brandon Williams (lf) grounded out to 2b.
- Dominiq Harris (1b) struck out swinging.
- Sterling Smith (dh) drew a 7-pitch, full-count walk.
- Jason Thomas (rf) struck out swinging.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) grounded out to 2b.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) also grounded out to 2b.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) grounded out to the pitcher on a bit of a cue ball hit that went down the 1b line. The pitcher fielded and tagged Lusson out.
- 3rd inning, PVAMU
- Salvador Hernandez (2b) struck out swinging. Rupp couldn't get a handle on the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Evan Richard (2) singled into cf.
- Brooks drew a 5-pitch walk, moving Richard to 2b.
- Skip Johnson made a trip to the mound.
- Oliver also drew a 5-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Angel lined out to lf. No chance to advance for the runners.
- Williams struck out swinging.
- Threat over.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Connor Rowe (cf) singled into cf.
- Jordan Etier (2b) moved Rowe to 2b on a sac bunt. The pitcher and first baseman both went after the ball hit down the line toward 1b. The pitcher got to it first and kept running, tagging Etier out just before he could get to the 1b bag.
- Walla drew a full-count walk.
- Loy struck out swinging (2-2 pitch).
- Shepherd singled through the left side, scoring Rowe and moving Walla to 2b. Walla rounded 2b and watched as the throw went home. He tried to move up to 3b on the throw but was tagged out (7-2-5, I think) to end the inning.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 4th inning, PVAMU
- Harris struck out swinging.
- Smith grounded out to 1b (unassisted) on a slow high-bouncer.
- Thomas flew out to rf.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Rupp lined out to cf at the warning track.
- Moldenhauer grounded out to 2b.
- Keyes drew a full-count walk and then stole 2b with Lusson at the plate.
- Lusson popped out to 1b (foul).
- Texas up 1-0.
- 5th inning, PVAMU
- Hernandez bit a bloop single into rf. Keyes charged hard and almost got to the ball. Alas...
- Richard moved Hernandez to 2b on a 3-4 sac bunt down the 1b line.
- Texas sent Kendal Carrillo (rhp) to the mound, replacing Stafford.
- Brooks struck out swinging.
- Oliver grounded out on a hard-hit ball to the pitcher.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Rowe struck out swinging (full count).
- Etier reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. The ball sailed over the first baseman and Etier turned to make a play for 2b. When he saw that the ball bounced hard off the wall and back into the field of play, he headed back to the 1b bag. The first baseman quickly tagged him before he got back to the bag, though. Out on the play. Etier tried to bluff his way into staying at 1b but he'd clearly turned toward 2b and he was out. The first base ump immediately called Etier out but then had a quick visit with the home and 3b umps before ruling, again, that Etier was out.

- Angel grounded out to 2b.
- Williams struck out swinging.
- Harris grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- Texas up 1-0.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Loy struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Shepherd drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Rupp also drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Which prompted a visit to the mound for the Panthers.
- Moldenhauer watched a ball then hit a hiiiiiiiiiiiigh fly ball into the PVAMU bullpen.
- Keyes grounded out to the pitcher. Keyes tried to bunt his way aboard but the pitcher made a great play to field the ball hit down the 1b line and then throw around Keyes to 1b as he was falling over the line into foul territory. Very, very nice play.
- Lusson flew out to lf.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 7th inning, PVAMU
- Smith grounded out to 3b. Lusson made a nice scoop and throw on a ball that was hit softly down the 3b line.
- Thomas also grounded out to 3b...this time on a more routine kind of play.
- Hernandez grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Rowe flew out to rf.
- Etier struck out swinging (full count).
- Walla lined into cf for a double.
- Loy drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Shepherd flew out to cf.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 8th inning, PVAMU
- Richard lined into lf for a single.
- Skip Johnson made a trip to the mound after the next pitch (a ball).
- Brooks then hit the 2nd pitch he saw into a picture-perfect 6-4-3 double play.
- Oliver grounded out to 1b (p covered bag). Shepherd bobbled the ball a bit as he was fielding but stayed with it and made the toss to Carrillo for the out.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Rupp struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Moldenhauer grounded out to ss. The shortstop made a really nice backhanded stop to rob Moldenhauer of a single. So sad.
- Keyes singled through the right side.
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson in to pinch-run for Keyes.
- Kevin Lusson hit a line-drive homerun over the rf wall.
- Rowe grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 6-0.
- 9th inning, PVAMU
- Texas kept Kyle Lusson in the game in rf and sent Hoby Milner (lhp) to the mound, replacing Carrillo.
- Rafael Perez (pinch-hitting for Angel) struck out swinging (foul tip).
- James Murphy (pinch-hitting for Williams) grounded out to 3b. Lusson ranged far to his left to get to the ball. I hope I don't jinx anything by saying that Lusson seemed to be playing with a lot more confidence in the field tonight. Good to see.
- Kyle Bible (pinch-hitting for Harris) struck out swinging to end the game.
- Texas wins 6-0.
After the game, Coach Garrido waited until the PVAMU team meeting in the field behind 3b was over before walking over to the team and spending a few minutes talking to several of the players. For the most part, they looked genuinely happy that he took the time to talk to them. Pretty cool. In the post-game interview, Bill Little asked him what he'd said to the other team and Coach Garrido explained that the PVAMU coach had told him that four of his players had played in California at a community college he (Garrido) had played at when he was younger. He said he walked over to meet the young men and that he'd congratulated all of the players on playing a competitive game.
Tonight's game was the last mid-week game of the regular season. The Horns now travel to Kansas State. Here's hoping for another great road trip! Hook 'em, Horns!
