Game 45: Baylor at Texas
Okay. 20 games in-a-row. 5 conference sweeps in-a-row. 7 conference series wins in-a-row. The Horns are 19-2 in conference play. The mind boggles.
Texas beat Baylor 4-1 today. And, didn't have to go into extra innings to do it. Lovely. They didn't play a perfect game. But, they did what they needed to do to win.
This team really seems to be on a roll. Obviously. We all know they're gonna lose a game down the road. But, you can just feel that they know what to they need to do to win. And, they keep doing it. And, it's not like the streak they got on last year where they kept scrambling around looking for a way to win. This year, they just do it. Uh-oh. Nike. Sorry about that. I did not mean to go all cliche on y'all. But, it's true. And, so...the line...

Sorry it took so long to get this online. I had a long week at work and then a couple of long baseball games and I kinda just collapsed when I got home after eating dinner with my folks after today's game. Ah well...you get what you pay for around here.
Here's how things played out...
- Baylor, 1st inning
- Brandon Workman (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Logan Vick (lf) lined into lf for a single and was then caught stealing (2-6) during the 2nd batter's plate appearance.
- Raynor Campbell (2b) struck out swinging.
- Joey Hainsfurther reached on an infield single to 2b. Shepherd initially went after the ball and then stumbled and fell trying to get back to the bag. Workman ran to cover the bag and seemed to tie the runner getting there.
- Cal Towey (rf) struck out swinging.
- Texas, 1st inning
- Craig Fritsch (rhp) on the mound for Baylor.
- Cohl Walla (lf) grounded out to 2b.
- Brandon Loy (ss) grounded out on a high bouncer to 3b.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) lined out to 2b. Really nice diving catch by the second baseman.
- Baylor, 2nd inning
- Gregg Glime (c) grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Max Muncy grounded out to 2b.
- Dan Evatt (dh) grounded out to the pitcher. Workman made a nice play to field a ball hit hard at his feet.
- Texas, 2nd inning
- Cameron Rupp (c) drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) moved Rupp to 2b on a 3-4 sac bunt down the 1b line.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) singled off the ss, scoring Rupp. The ball glanced off the shortstop's glove into shallow cf.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) grounded into a 3-6 double play. The first baseman fielded even with the bag, stepped on it, and threw down to ss who tagged Keyes for the final out of the inning. Smith made a visit to the mound after the first pitch to Lusson, by the way.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 3rd inning
- Don Lambert (cf) grounded out to 1b (3-1, p covered bag).
- Jake Miller (ss) popped out to 2b. It looked like Etier almost lost the ball in the sun.
- Vick grounded out to 1b (3-1 again).
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 3rd inning
- Connor Rowe (cf) reached on a triple to cf. On the play, the center fielder was running hard to his right and almost caught the ball but in glanced off his glove and Rowe ran hard all the way for 3b. He almost slid past the bag going into 3b. Heh.
- Jordan Etier (2b) popped out to 3b.
- Walla grounded out to ss, scoring Rowe.
- Loy struck out swinging (1-2 count). He tried to check his swing but no go.
- Texas up 2-0.
- Baylor, 4th inning
- Campbell drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Hainsfurther hit into a 4-6-3 double play!
- Towey grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 2-0.
- Texas, 4th inning
- Shepherd popped out to 2b in shallow rf.
- Rupp flew out to lf.
- Moldenhauer tripled off the wall in cf. Purty.
- Keyes flew out to cf at the warning track.
- Texas up 2-0.
- Baylor, 5th inning
- Glime flew out to rf.
- Muncy struck out swinging. Rupp dropped the ball and quickly tagged the batter to complete the out.
- Evatt struck out swinging.
- Texas up 2-0.
- Texas, 5th inning
- Lusson drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Rowe moved Lusson to 2b on a 3-unassisted sac bunt.
- Etier grounded out to ss, moving Lusson to 3b.
- Walla, after fighting off several pitches, flew out to cf.
- Texas up 2-0.
- Baylor, 6th inning
- Lambert singled off the mound into cf.
- Miller reached on a fielder's choice. He was trying to bunt Lambert over but the ball was hit too hard to the pitcher. Alas, the throw from Workman to the ss was offline and went off the shortstop's glove into rf. Lambert reached 3b on the error.
- Vick doubled off the base of the wall in cf, scoring Lambert and moving Miller to 3b.
- Runners at 2b and 3b, no outs.
- Campbell struck out swinging. Rupp couldn't hold onto the ball but quickly picked it up and tagged Campbell for the out.
- Hainsfurther also struck out swinging. Again, Rupp could not hang onto the ball. He grabbed it, looked Miller back to 3b and threw down to 1b to complete the out.
- With a lefty due up (Hainsfurther batted left-handed but is a switch-hitter), Texas sent Andrew McKirahan (lhp) to the mound, replacing Workman.
- Towey struck out swinging!
- The Horns got into trouble but then struck out the side. Nice.
- Texas up 2-1.
- Texas, 6th inning
- Loy doubled into rf.
- Shepherd lined into cf for a single, scoring Loy.
- Baylor made a visit to the mound but did not change pitchers.
- Rupp doubled into lf, moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Baylor sent Josh Turley (lhp) to the mound, replacing Fritsch.
- Moldenhauer grounded out to the pitcher on a bit of an excuse-me swing.
- Keyes was intentionally walked.
- Lusson hit a sac fly to rf, scoring Shepherd.
- Rowe hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the inning.
- Texas up 4-1.
- Baylor, 7th inning
- Glime grounded out to ss.
- Muncy reached on a fielding error by 2b. Etier misplayed the ball and then couldn't get to it in time to make the out.
- Evatt struck out swinging.
- Baylor sent Chris Slater (right-handed batter) in to pinch-hit for Lambert.
- Texas responded by sending Stayton Thomas (rhp) to the mound, replacing McKirahan.
- Slater grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 4-1.
- Texas, 7th inning
- Etier struck out swinging (full count).
- Walla grounded out 1-6-3 on a ball that went off the pitcher's glove toward ss. The shortstop made a very nice running scoop and throw to make the out on a very close play at 1b.
- Loy reached on a bloop single to shallow cf.
- Shepherd struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Texas up 4-1.
- Baylor, 8th inning
- Miller struck out swinging.
- Vick flew out to lf in the lf/cf gap. Nice catch by Walla ranging to his left.
- Campbell struck out swinging on 3 pitches.
- Texas up 4-1.
- Texas, 8th inning
- Rupp struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Moldenhauer reached on an error by 1b. The ball went through the first baseman's legs. Ouch.
- After a pitch to Keyes, Texas sent Sam Stafford in to pinch run for Moldenhauer.
- Keys flew out to rf in the cf/rf gap.
- Lusson lined into rf, moving Stafford to 3b.
- Rowe grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas up 4-1.
- Baylor, 9th inning
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson into rf, replacing Keyes.
- Hainsfurther grounded out to 2b.
- Towey grounded out to 2b. Etier made a nice back-handed stab on a ball that was headed into cf to rob Towey of a single.
- Glime also grounded out to 2b to end the game!
- Texas wins 4-1.
All-in-all, a nice game. Obviously, it would've been better if they'd managed to avoid the errors. Good thing was that they didn't let the errors get them down. They just buckled down and got the job done each time. Workman got the win to move his record to 9-1. And, Thomas earned his first save of the year. Nice.
The Horns now host Prairie View A&M on Tuesday and then travel to Manhattan, KS, for their next-to-last Big 12 series of they year.
