Game 44: Baylor at Texas
Oh. My. Goodness. What a game. Texas beat Baylor 2-1 in 14 innings! Apparently, going extra innings on Friday night was not enough. Wow. Jordan Weymouth hit a beauty of a double (well, it'll be counted as a single in the official boxscore, I'm sure, but it was a double) down the lf line to score Paul Montalbano in the 14th. Purty. And, I could not contain my grin as I watched Brandon Loy run full speed out to 2b after said hit to try and hoist Weymouth into the air. What fun.

UPDATE (Sunday morning). Now that I've had some sleep, I can get back to the details. At first I thought that there were really only three highlights but that's just not so. Full game report in order. So, here's how it all played out...

- Cole Green (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Logan Vick (lf) flew out to cf.
- Raynor Campbell (2b) singled into lf and was then caught stealing (2-6) on the 3rd pitch to the next batter.
- Joey Hainsfurther (3b) lined out to cf.
- Texas, 1st inning
- Shawn Tolleson (rhp) on the mound for Baylor.
- Cohl Walla (lf) popped out to 1b (foul) at the Texas dugout...nice play by the Baylor first baseman.
- Brandon Loy (ss) struck out looking (full count).
- Tant Shepherd (1b) struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Do I sense a theme?
- Baylor, 2nd inning
- Cal Towey (rf) struck out looking.
- Gregg Glime (c) grounded out to ss.
- Max Muncy (1b) struck out looking.
- Texas, 2nd inning
- Cameron Rupp (c) struck out looking (0-2 count).
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) flew out to rf (in the cf/rf gap).
- Kevin Keyes (rf) singled up the middle.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) doubled down the rf line, scoring Keyes. Keyes was off with the pitch and made a nice run around the bags.
- Cameron Rowe (cf) lined out to lf.

- Kenton Gedwed (dh) popped out to 2b.
- Don Lambert (cf) drew a 7-pitch, full-count walk.
- Landis Ware (ss) grounded into a 6-4-3 double play!

- Texas, 3rd inning
- Jordan Etier (2b) struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Walla reached on a bloop single that fell into shallow cf between the shortstop and center fielder. He was then picked off (1-3) between the 2nd and 3rd pitches to Loy.
- Loy lined out to 3b.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 4th inning
- 3-up/3-down: Vick grounded out to 1b (unassisted); Campbell grounded out to 3b (unassisted); and Hainsfurther grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 4th inning
- Shepherd flew out to lf in the lf/cf gap. During his at-bat, he hit a pretty hard line drive into the stands just over the dugout on the 1b side and a kid (who looked tot be about 10) stabbed it with his glove. Nice!
- Rupp grounded out to 3b.
- Moldenhauer struck out swinging (1-2 pitch).
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 5th inning
- Towey struck out looking.
- Glime grounded out to 2b.
- Muncy singled into lf and stole 2b (on a bizarre kinda delayed steal thing with Gedwed at the plate.
- Gedwed flew out to cf.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 5th inning
- Keyes struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Kevin Lusson hit a deep fly ball to rf that I was sure was gonna leave the park. Alas, it was about 5 feet short or so...pulled in by the right fielder at the wall. Too bad.
- Rowe flew out to cf (8-pitch at-bat).
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 6th inning
- Wherein things got a little too close for comfort.
- Lambert grounded out to 3b.
- Ware reached on a throwing error by 3b. Lusson fielded and threw high to 1b. Shepherd leapt up, caught the ball, and swept at Ware. The 1st base ump ruled that the tag missed. Coach Garrido argued the call. Anyone watching on TV wee the re-play? Was he out? Just curious.
- Vick flew out to cf.
- Campbell doubled to the cf/rf gap. Ware tried to score from 1b but was thrown out 9-4-2 on a great relay throw from 2b. Really nicely done.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 6th inning
- Etier, who'd just made that great relay throw, singled through the left side but was caught stealing (2-6) on the 2nd pitch to Walla.
- Which was a shame 'cause Walla reached on an infield single to 3b.
- Loy struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Shepherd grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 7th inning
- 3-up/3-down: Hainsfurther grounded out to 1b, Towey grounded out to ss, and Glime grounded out to ss!
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 7th inning
- Rupp flew out to rf in the cf/rf gap.
- Moldenhauer singled up the middle which prompted the 2nd mound visit of the day by Steve Smith.
- Keyes struck out looking (full count).
- Lusson flew out to cf.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 8th inning
- Muncy flew out to cf.
- Dan Evatt (pinch-hitting in the dh spot) doubled into cf.
- Baylor then sent Steve DalPorto in to pinch-run for Evatt.
- Lambert struck out swinging.
- Ware grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 1-0
- Texas, 8th inning
- Rowe struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Etier struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Walla also struck out swinging (also 1-2 count). The catcher dropped the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Worst offensive inning of the day for the Horns, I do believe.
- That ended up being the last out for the Baylor starter who went 8 innings and struck out 11 Texas batters. Good day for him.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 9th inning
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson into rf, replacing Keyes.
- Vick reached on an infield singled and advanced to 2b on a throwing error by (E6). The ball was lined off Green's glove and then dribbled to the 2b bag. Loy scooped it up and tried to make the play at 1b but his throw sailed over a leaping Shepherd into the Texas dugout. Ouch.
- Vick moved up to 3b on a passed ball with Campbell at the plate.
- After the passed ball, Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound.
- Campbell went on to strike out swinging.
- With the infield pulled in, Hainsfurther pushed a single through the right side, scoring Vick.
- Texas sent Chance Ruffin (rhp) to the mound, replacing Green.
- So sad...Green got awfully close to his 3rd complete game in-a-row.
- Towey flew out to cf.
- Glime was hit by an 0-2 pitch (yes, really), moving Hainsfurther to 2b
- Muncy hit into a 5-unassisted fielder's choice. Lusson fielded and then tagged Hainsfurther running from 2b.
- Game tied 1-1. Damn.
- Texas, 9th inning
- Wherein, the Horns almost made it a regulation 9-inning game. Alas...
- Baylor sent Willie Kempf (rhp) to the mound, replacing Tolleson.
- Loy hit a line drive over the third baseman into lf.
- Insert visit to mound by Steve Smith.
- Shepherd moved Loy to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Rupp struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Baylor intentionally walked Moldenhauer.
- Paul Montalbano (pinch-hitting for Kyle Lusson, who'd gone into Keyes' spot in the lineup when he went into rf) drew a 5-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Baylor sent Josh Turley (lhp) to the mound, replacing Kempf.
- Kevin Lusson struck out swinging (1-2 count). Ouch.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Baylor, 10th inning
- Montalbano stayed in the game for Texas in rf.
- Jon Ringenberg (pinch-hitting in the dh spot) drew a full-count walk.
- Lambert tried to bunt Ringerberg to 2b but Shepherd made a fantastic play. He jumped on a ball bunted toward the mound, whirled, and threw a bullet to ss to get the lead runner out! Wow. (Lamber safe at 1b on the fielder's choice.)
- Ware fouled off sever pitches before he struck out swinging.
- Vick singled up the middle, moving Lambert to 2b.
- Campbell struck out swinging. Yes!
- Game tied 1-1.
- Texas, 10th inning
- Rowe reached on an infield single to 3b.
- Etier moved Rowe to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Walla was intentionally walked.
- Baylor sent Brooks Pinckard (rhp) to the mound, replacing Turley.
- Loy lined out to rf (toward the cf) gap. Nice running catch by the right fielder. Shucks.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Baylor, 11th inning
- Texas sent Hoby Milner (lhp) to the mound, replacing Ruffin.
- Hainsfurther grounded out to 2b.
- Chris Slater (pinch-hitting for Towey) struck out swinging. Rupp dropped the ball but tagged Slater to complete the out.
- Glime popped out to 2b. The ball was directly behind 2b and could've been fielded by Loy or Etier but Etier called it. Then, he had to lunge and ended up falling down to make the catch. Whew!
- Game tied 1-1.
- Texas, 11th inning
- Slater stayed in the game in rf.
- Rupp popped out to shallow cf.
- Moldenhauer flew out to rf (toward the cf/rf gap).
- Montalbano grounded out to 2b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Baylor, 12th inning
- Munch struck out swinging.
- Josh Ludy (pinch-hitting in the dh spot) grounded out to the pitcher.
- Lambert flew out to lf.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Texas, 12th inning
- Lusson grounded out to 2b. The out went 4-1, though. On the play, the first baseman also went for the ball and then realized he wasn't going to get to it. He stumbled out and fell down as he tried to stay out of the way of the throw from 2b to the pitcher (covering the bag).
- Rowe grounded out to the pitcher.
- Etier struck out swinging (2-2 pitch).
- Game tied 1-1.
- Baylor, 13th inning
- Ware struck out looking.
- Vick struck out swinging.
- Campbell grounded out to ss.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Texas, 13th inning
- Walla struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Loy lined out to cf.
- Shepherd singled through the right side.
- Rupp drew a full-count, 8-pitch walk, moving Shepherd to 2b.
- Moldenhauer struck out looking (1-2 count). It was at this point, by the way, that I noticed he wasn't wearing that big arm guard on his right elbow. 'Not sure if he was wearing it earlier in the game or not but he was not wearing it for this at-bat. Dunnow what's up with the change.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Baylor, 14th inning
- Hainsfurther tried to bunt his way aboard. Luckily, Milner managed to get to the ball and throw him out at 1b. Yes!
- Slater flew out to cf.
- Glime popped out to shallow lf.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Texas, 14th inning
- Montalbano doubled into the lf/cf gap.
- Baylor pulled the intentional walk play for the third time of the day, and walked Lusson.
- Jordan Weymouth went to the plate, pinch-hitting for Rowe. He squared to bunt and watched a ball. Then, unusually, he summoned Coach Garrido over for a face-to-face. He squared to bunt again and bunted through two pitches. Then watched another ball. Then, hit a beautiful double down the lf line, scoring Montalbano to win the game. The double, will only be recorded as a single officially. But, it was a double. Woo hoo!
- Texas wins 2-1 in fourteen!!!!
Wow. Both starters did a really good job and neither deserved a loss...so it's a good thing neither was saddled with one. Milner did a spectacular job in relief to get the win. He faced 12 batters and didn't allow a single one to reach base. Very, very cool.
And, it's back to Disch-Falk in a few hours. It's Sunday...hitting day for the Horns. 'Hope they put the game away early. And, no...I'm not gonna talk about the win streak. Brandon Workman on the mound for Texas. C'mon, bats! C'mon, Horns!
