Game 43: Texas at Baylor
I listened to the game on KVET (Craig Way and Keith Moreland with the call). This report is based on that broadcast.

Geez. That was nerve-wracking!
Taylor Jungmann started and ended up leaving the game with Baylor ahead by one. Hard luck Jungmann, again, I guess. Surprisingly, he's 4-1 in 11 appearances. Kinda hard to believe, eh? Jungmann went 6 innings and gave up 2 runs (1 unearned). By my count, he faced 27 batters. He gave up 8 hits (1 triple), walked 3, and struck out 2. I don't have a reliable pitch count since I was listening on the radio. Andrew McKirahan threw the 7th. He hit the first batter he faced and gave up an intentional walk later in the inning...otherwise no damage. Chance Ruffin threw the final 3 innings to get the win and improve his record to 5-1. He walked the first batter he faced and hit the second. Yikes. But, got out of trouble. He gave up a 1-out single in the 9th but got out of the inning again without giving up any runs. In the 10th, he gave up another 1-out single followed by a walk before striking out the last two batters of the game. Whew.
And, here's how it all played out...

- Logan Verrett (rhp) on the mound for Baylor.
- Cohl Walla (lf) hit the first pitch to deep lf. Craig Way was convinced it was gonna be a homerun. Alas...not so. Fly out to the warning track instead.
- Brandon Loy (ss) grounded out to 3b.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) lined out to rf.
- Baylor, 1st inning
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Logan Vick (lf) singled into lf.
- Raynor Campbell (2b) moved Vick to 2b on a 3-unassisted sac bunt.
- Tyler Collins (rf) struck out swinging on 3 pitches.
- Joey Hainsfurther (3b) flew out to shallow rf after swinging for a strike and then fouling off 4 pitches.
- Texas, 2nd inning
- Cameron Rupp (c) singled into cf.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) moved Rupp to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) grounded out to 2b, moving Rupp to 3b.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) reached on an infield single to 3b, scoring Rupp.
- Lusson moved up to 2b on a bad pick-off throw attempt. Error charged to the pitcher.
- Cameron Rowe (cf) struck out swinging (0-2 count).

- Baylor, 2nd inning
- Max Muncy (1b) drew a full-count walk.
- Cal Towey (dh) singled up the middle, moving Muncy to 2b.
- Gregg Glime (c) advanced the batters to 2b and 3b on a 1-3 sac bunt. The amazing thing about the bunt? Full count.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound.
- Slater grounded out to the pitcher...who looked the runner back to 3b before throwing to 1b.
- Landis Ware (ss) lined out to lf after fighting off several pitches.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 3rd inning
- Jordan Etier (2b) grounded out to ss.
- Walla popped out to 2b.
- Loy grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 3rd inning
- Vick grounded out to 2b.
- Campbell grounded out to ss.
- Collins reached on a triple to lf. Walla appeared to lose the ball in the lights and ducked as the ball was about to get to him. The ball rolled all the way to the wall before being fielded by Rowe.
- Hainsfurther grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 4th inning
- Shepherd reached on an infield single to 3b.
- Rupp struck out swinging (2-2 count). Shepherd stole 2b on the strikeout pitch.
- Moldenhauer grounded out 1-4-3 off the pitcher's glove, moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Keyes grounded out to 3b.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 4th inning
- Muncy drew a 5-pitch walk. Second lead-off walk for Muncy.
- Towey reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice.
- Glime flew out to cf at the warning track.
- Slater flew out to left center...cf made play.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 5th inning
- Lusson lined into rf for a single.
- Rowe struck out swinging after failing to get the bunt down (0-2 count).
- Etier struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Walla reached on an infield single to ss. Keith commented that the first baseman has not been able to cleanly pick a throw that bounced in the dirt on 3 difference opportunities so far in the game.
- With Loy at the plate, Lusson and Walla completed a double steal.
- Loy then grounded out to 1b.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 5th inning
- Ware flew out to cf.
- Vick drew a full count walk.
- Campbell singled up the middle, moving Vick to 2b.
- Skip Johnson made another trip to the mound.
- Collins hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning!
- Texas up 1-0.
- Texas, 6th inning
- Shepherd lined into cf for a single.
- Rupp struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Moldenhauer flew out to rf.
- Keyes singled into lf, moving Shepherd to 2b. Shepherd was on the run with the pitch but had to hold up at 2b because the ball went straight to the left fielder.
- Lusson flew out to rf.
- That's 7 stranded (5 in scoring position) for the Horns through 6.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Baylor, 6th inning
- Hainsfurther singled up the middle.
- Muncy struck out swinging. Yes!
- Towey singled through the right side, moving Hainsfurther to 2b.
- Glime singled through the right side, scoring Hainsfurther. Shepherd cut off the throw from rf and tried to throw Towey out at 3b but the throw was bad and went out of play. Towey scored on the error and Glime moved all the way up to 3b.
- Slater hit a ball to 3b (ruled a single). The throw from Lusson got away from Shepherd. Slater rounded the bag and then decided to go back to 1b but Shepherd got the ball and tagged Slater out before he could get back to 1b. Glime had to hold up at 3b. Lots of confusion on the play, eh? Not sure I really got a reliable description there.
- Ware popped out to 3b (foul).
- Texas down 1-2.
- Texas, 7th inning
- Rowe struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Etier also struck out looking at a 2-2 pitch.
- Walla also struck out looking. Ouch. He did work the count full and see 9 pitches before going down.
- Texas down 1-2.
- Baylor, 7th inning
- Texas sent Andrew McKirahan (lhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann.
- Vick was hit by a pitch. Sigh.
- Campbell flew out to cf.
- Collins moved Vick to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Hainsfurther was walked intentionally.
- Muncy grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- Texas down 1-2.
- Texas, 8th inning
- Loy fell behind 0-2 but then drew a full-count walk.
- Visit to the mound for Baylor.
- Shepherd moved Loy to 2b on a 3-4 sac bunt.
- Rupp grounded out to ss, moving Loy to 3b.
- Moldenhauer singled up the middle, scoring Loy!!!
- Texas sent Sam Stafford in to pinch-run for Moldenhauer.
- Baylor sent Kolt Browder (rhp) to the mound, replacing Verrett.
- Keyes struck out looking (full count).
- Game tied 2-2.
- Baylor, 8th inning
- Texas sent Chance Ruffin (rhp) to the mound, replacing McKirahan.
- Towey drew a full-count walk.
- Glime was hit by a pitch. Keith argued that the batter might've bunted through the ball and it should've been called a strike instead of a hit batter.
- Slater bunted a third strike foul for a strikeout. Really.
- Ware hit a ground ball to 2b. Etier knocked it down, grabbed it, stepped on 2b for the first out, and threw to 1b for a double play!!! Whew.
- Game tied 2-2.
- Texas, 9th inning
- Lusson flew out to cf (in left center).
- Rowe struck out swinging (1-2 count). Fourth strikeout of the night for Rowe. Ouch.
- Etier struck out swinging (full count).
- Game tied 2-2.
- Baylor, 9th inning
- Vick struck out looking.
- Campbell hit a bloop single into lf.
- Collins struck out swinging.
- Hainsfurther flew out to cf.
- Game tied 2-2.
- Texas, 10th inning
- Don Lambert went into cf for Baylor, replacing Slater. This was not noted by the radio guys...I saw it on GameTracker. Which was kind of funny because GameTracker did not notice Stafford pinch-running for Moldenhauer earlier.
- Walla singled down the lf line.
- Loy tried to bunt Walla to 2b but drew a 4-pitch walk, moving Walla to 2b. I'll take it!
- Shepherd bunted for a single on the 3rd base side of the mound to load the bases!
- Rupp (after a brief chat with Coach Garrido...and with the infield pulled in) fouled off a couple of pitches, worked the count full, and then struck out looking. So sad.
- Paul Montalbano (pinch-hitting in the dh spot) drew a 5-pitch walk, scoring Walla! (And, keeping the bases loaded.)
- Baylor sent Brooks Pinckard (rhp) to the mound, replacing Browder.
- Keyes hit a sac fly to cf, scoring Loy.
- Lusson grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 4-2!
- Baylor, 10th inning
- Muncy struck out looking.
- Towey singled into rf. Ugh.
- Glime drew a 4-pitch walk. What? Oh my. Baylor sent Steve DalPorto in to pinch-run for Glime. Again, the radio guys did not notice.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound.
- Lambert (radio guys kept saying he was pinch-hitting) struck out swinging.
- Kenton Gedwed (pinch-hitting for Ware) struck out swinging to end the game!
- Texas wins 4-2 in 10 innings!!!!
Wow. The Horns did not manage to get the Bears out in order once today while they went down in order four times. Not pretty. But, a win's a win. And, starting this series out with a win on the road is great.
The teams now come to Austin for the final two games of the series. Tomorrow night's game starts at 8 pm and Sunday's game at 2:30. I was wondering about the unusual start times and then I noticed that they're both scheduled to be broadcast on cable TV...the Saturday game on ESPNU and the Sunday game on Fox College Sports.
And, they'll be retiring Keith Moreland's #3 before tomorrow night's game. I suspect Cameron Rupp will get to wear the number for the rest of the season but I dunno...
