Game 47: Texas at Kansas State
I listened to tonight's game on the radio...Keith Moreland and Craig Way with the call. This report is based on said broadcast. By the way, no GameTracker for KSU so if the radio guys missed something, I did too!

Jungmann struggled on the mound and Texas batters struggled at the plate with runners on the basepads. The Horns stranded 11 by my count...7 in scoring position. Not a pretty game.
And, so...here's how things played out...
- Texas, 1st inning
- Kyle Hunter (lhp) on the mound for KSU.
- Cohl Walla (lf) struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Brandon Loy (ss) singled through the right side.
- Tant Shepherd hit a bloop single into cf, moving Loy to 2b. The center fielder and second baseman (Jake Brown) collided and Brown ended up coming out of the game. Tanner Witt went in at 2b for KSU.
- Cameron Rupp (c) struck out swinging (full count).
- Kevin Keyes (rf) grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice. Oops. Never mind. The ground ball hit Loy running from 2b...automatic out credited to the ss.
- KSU, 1st inning
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Adam Muenster (3b) drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Carter Jurica (ss) flew out to cf.
- Nick Martini (cf) drew another 5-pitch walk.
- Which prompted a visit to the mound by Skip Johnson.
- Daniel Dellasega (c) struck out swinging. Whew.
- With Kent Urban (1b) at the plate, Muenster and Martini stole 3b and 2b on the 2nd pitch to the batter. Moreland commented that the play at 3b was very close.
- Urban drew another 5-pitch walk.
- Blair DeBord (dh) struck out swinging. Double whew.
- Texas, 2nd inning
- Kevin Lusson (3b) drew a full-count 7-pitch walk.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh), who squared to bunt on the first pitch but then did not square again, doubled to left-center. Lusson was waved around 3b but stumbled as he rounded 3b and fell so he had to return to 3b.
- Connor Rowe (cf) popped out to 1b on a bunt attempt.
- Jordan Etier (2b) squared to bunt and was hit (on the chin?) by the pitch to load the bases. He stayed in the game.
- KSU argued that Etier swung through the pitch but lost the argument.
- Walla hit into a 5-2 fielder's choice. No run. Bases still loaded.
- Loy hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice to end the threat. The third baseman juggled the ball a bit...but, alas, not enough.
- KSU, 2nd inning
- Mike Kindel (rf) singled a high-chopper up the middle.
- Matt Giller (lf) moved Kindel to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Tanner Witt (2b) grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Muenster drew a full-count 8-pitch walk. Geesh.
- Jurica popped out to the catcher behind the plate. Yes!
- Texas, 3rd inning
- Shepherd lined into lf for a double. Close play at 2b but Shepherd was safe.
- Rupp grounded out to 2b, moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Keyes struck out looking (2-2 count). Way thought the strike zone expanded on the strikeout pitch.
- Lusson drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Moldenhauer flew out to lf.
- KSU, 3rd inning
- Martini grounded out on a high-bouncer to ss.
- Dellasega struck out swinging on 3 pitches!
- Urban grounded out to 2b.
- Texas, 4th inning
- Rowe struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Etier flew out to cf.
- Walla grounded out on a high-bouncer to 2b.
- KSU, 4th inning
- DeBord grounded out to 2b.
- Kindel flew out to cf.
- Giller out on a soft liner to 2b.
- Texas, 5th inning
- Loy doubled down the lf line into the corner.
- Shepherd struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- With Rupp at the plate, Loy was picked off as he tried to steal 3b. The guys did not say who was involved in the play but it sounded like 1-4-5, maybe.
- Rupp flew out to rf at the warning track.
- KSU, 5th inning
- Witt drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Muenster tried to bunt Witt over to 2b but drew a 4-pitch walk instead.
- Which prompted a second visit to the mound by Skip Johnson.
- Jurica popped out to rf...nice play by Keyes to run in and catch a ball that should've been to 2b but got caught up in the wind.
- Martini drew a 4-pitch walk to load the bases. Ouch.
- With Dellasega at the plate, the runners advanced a base (run scored) on a wild pitch.
- Dellasega grounded out to ss, scoring Muenster and moving Martini to 3b.
- Urban popped out to 3b.
- Jungmann really struggling with the strike zone. By my count, he's thrown 90 pitches...40 strikes and 50 balls...through the first 5 innings.
- Texas down 0-2.
- Texas, 6th inning
- Keyes grounded out to ss.
- Lusson struck out swinging on 3 pitches.
- Moldenhauer singled into rf.
- Rowe doubled into right-center. Moldenhauer collided with the catcher at home but was safe. Whew. Close play. The catcher appeared to be hurt a bit on the play...left shoulder. But he stayed in the game.
- Etier flew out to deep cf.
- Texas down 1-2.
- KSU, 6th inning
- DeBord grounded out to ss.
- Kindel struck out swinging after fouling off a couple of pitches.
- Giller was hit by the first pitch...on his arm.
- Texas sent Hoby Milner (lhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann.
- Jungmann went 5.2, faced 26, threw 102 pitches (48 strikes), gave up 2 earned runs on 1 hit (single). He walked 7, hit 1, struck out 4, and threw 1 wild pitch.
- Witt struck out swinging.
- Texas down 1-2.
- Texas, 7th inning
- KSU sent Evan Marshall (rhp) to the mound, replacing Hunter.
- Walla grounded out to 2b.
- Loy reached on an error by 2b who dropped the ball.
- Shepherd hit into a 6-3 double play. The shortstop fielded, stepped on 2b, and threw to 1b for the final out.
- Texas down 1-2.
- KSU, 7th inning
- Muenster popped out to 2b.
- Jurica lined into lf for a single.
- Martini singled into cf. On the hit and run, Jurica moved up to 3b.
- Dellasega popped out to 1b on a bunt attempt.
- Urban grounded out to ss.
- Texas down 1-2.
- Texas, 8th inning
- KSU moved Martini to lf and sent Ryan Moore into cf (taking Giller's spot in the line-up).
- Rupp struck out (full count, 8 pitches).
- Keyes reached on a fielding error by the third baseman.
- Lusson flew out to cf.
- KSU sent Thomas Rooke (lhp) to the mound, replacing Marshall.
- Moldenhauer drew a 5-pitch walk, moving Keyes to 2b.
- Texas sent Sam Stafford in to pinch run for Moldenhauer.
- And, KSU made another pitching change. They sent James Allen (rhp) to the mound, replacing Rooke.
- Paul Montalbano (pinch-hitting for Rowe) grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas, by the way, sent Kyle Lusson out to pinch-run for Keyes when the count got to 1-2 against Montalbano.
- Texas down 1-2.
- KSU, 8th inning
- Texas kept Kyle Lusson and Montalbano in the game. Walla moved over to cf, Montalbano went into lf, and Lusson went into rf.
- DeBord was hit by a pitch on his arm.
- DeBord, by the way, popped a ball up in foul territory during his at-bat. Shepherd and Milner both went for the ball and ran into each other. Sigh...Milner should've left the play to Shepherd. Texas was charged with an error after the fact (E3, oddly enough) on the missed foul pop-up.
- Matt Applegate went in to pinch-run for DeBord.
- Kindel struck out looking.
- Moore reached on a bunt single down the 3b line, moving Applegate to 2b.
- Texas sent Chance Ruffin (rhp) to the mound, replacing Milner.
- With Witt at the plate, Applegate was caught stealing (2-5)! Not sure if Moore moved up to 2b on the play or not but I think he did.
- Witt went on to strike out swinging.
- Texas down 1-2.
- Texas, 9th inning
- Jordan Weymouth (left-handed batter, pinch-hitting for Etier) lined out to ss. Great timing on jump by ss to nab ball.
- Jonathan Walsh (switch hitter, batting left-handed, pinch-hitting for Walla) was hit by a full-count pitch.
- KSU made a visit to the mound when the count got to 3-1 against Loy.
- Loy went on to draw a 5-pitch walk.
- Shepherd hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
- Tommy Nicholson and Augie Garrido argued the call at 1b, saying Shepherd beat the throw, to no avail.
- Texas loses 1-2.
And, thus ends the 21-game winning streak. Frankly, I'm happy to see the streak end here rather than in the post-season. Now they can get on another run...this one much more important!
