Game 45: Texas at Baylor
Texas won today's game 3-1 to sweep Baylor. I watched the game on the Baylor internet stream and this report is based on that. Today's game was very different from the Friday and Saturday games...a low scoring error-free event. Texas out-hit Baylor 12-5 but still only managed to push 3 runs across. The starters for both teams did a great job. Taylor Jungmann got his first start and win in Big 12 play to improve his record to 5-3 on the season. He went 6 innings, faced 22 batters, and gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits with 10 strikeouts (!) and 1 walk. Austin Dicharry pitched the 7th and Austin Wood pitched the final 2 innings of the game to earn his 12th save of the year. Nice.
Today's starting line-ups:
| Texas | Baylor |
|---|---|
|
1 Michael Torres, 3b 2 Travis Tucker, 2b 3 Brandon Belt, 1b 4 Kevin Lusson, dh 5 Cameron Rupp, c 6 Kevin Keyes, rf 7 Brandon Loy, ss 8 Connor Rowe, cf 9 Tant Shepherd, lf - Taylor Jungmann, p |
1 Dustin Dickerson, dh 2 Shaver Hansen, ss 3 Aaron Miller, rf 4 Dan Evatt, 1b 5 Ben Booker, cf 6 Adam Hornung, lf 7 Gregg Glime, c 8 Raynor Campbell, 3b 9 Landis Ware, 2b - Willie Kempf, p |
Yep...Tim Maitland got his first start. Good for him. And, here's how things played out:
- 1st inning, Texas
- Willie Kempf (rhp) on the mound for Baylor.
- Torres struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Tucker flew out to rf.
- Belt struck out swinging at a very high pitch (2-2 count).
- 1st inning, Baylor
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Dickerson struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Hansen grounded out to 3b.
- Miller struck out swinging (foul tip caught by Rupp).
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Kevin Lusson struck out looking (1-2 count); sadly, he watched all three strikes.
- Rupp hit a solo shot over the rf fence!
- Keyes grounded out to 2b.
- Loy struck out looking (full count).
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Baylor
- Evatt struck out looking.
- Booker grounded out to 1b (p covered 1b bag).
- Hornung struck out swinging.
- Note: Hornung fouled off a pitch that hit Rupp on his throwing hand. It sure looked like it stung. Rupp only took about 20 seconds to shake his hand and then got back to business.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Rowe struck out swinging (foul tip).
- Maitland chopped out on a grounder to the pitcher.
- Torres Singled up the middle.
- Tucker struck out looking.
- Note: After Tucker watched the first pitch (called strike), I counted up. Through the first 11 Texas batters, 7 of them watched called first-pitch strikes. There were only 2 first-pitch balls called. The Baylor starter was certainly doing his job.
- 3rd inning, Baylor
- Glime grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Campbell singled up the middle.
- Ware struck out swinging.
- Dickerson flew out to lf (at the warning track near the corner).
- Another note: through the first 3 innings, 11 batters have been struck out...6 Texas batters and 5 Baylor batters.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Belt singled up the middle. The shortstop managed to stop the ball behind 2b to keep it from going into the outfield but couldn't glove it.
- Kevin Lusson moved Belt to 2b on a sac bunt down the 1b line (out went 1-3). The pitcher almost overthrew the first baseman but he stretched and got back down to tag the base in time to make the out.
- Rupp singled to cf, scoring Belt.
- Keyes singled through the right side, moving Rupp to 3b.
- Steve Smith made a visit to the mound. Coach Garrido took advantage of the delay and met with the Texas base-runners and batters due up.
- Loy, sadly, hit into a 6-3 double play. The shortstop fielded, stepped on the 2b bag for the first out, and then threw to 1b to get Loy.
- Texas up 2-0.
- 4th inning, Baylor
- Hansen grounded out to 1b. Belt stopped the hard-hit ball but did not field cleanly and had to go into foul territory to collect the ball and then throw to the pitcher covering the bag to get the out.
- Miller struck out swinging (foul tip).
- Evatt struck out swinging.
- 7th strikeout of the game for Jungmann. By my count, he'd faced 13 batters, thrown 47 pitches, and given up only 1 hit to this point.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Rowe drew a 4-pitch walk (first walk of the game for either team).
- Maitland moved Rowe to 2b with a sac bunt to 1b (tag, unassisted).
- Steve Smith made another visit to the mound.
- Torres reached on an infield single off the pitcher, moving Rowe to 3b.
- Tucker squared to bunt the first pitch but watched a called strike. The catcher quickly threw down to 3b and picked Rowe off for the 2nd out of the inning. Damn.
- Tucker grounded out to ss.
- 5th inning, Baylor
- Booker struck out swinging.
- Hornung struck out swinging.
- Glime grounded out to the pitcher.
- Fourth 3-up/3-down inning for Jungmann.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Baylor sent Craig Fritsch (rhp) to the mound, replacing Kempf.
- Belt hit a beautiful bunt single down the 3b line. Wow. He caught the third baseman playing deep. I'll say it again: wow.
- Kevin Lusson moved Belt to 2b with a sac bunt down the 1b line to the pitcher.
- Belt stole 3b on the 1st pitch to Rupp. Close play at 3b.
- Rupp worked the count full, fouled off a pitch, and then walked. Putting runners at the corners.
- Keyes hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Bah.
- 6th inning, Baylor
- Campbell drew a 5-pitch walk. First (and, it turned out, only) walk of the game for Jungmann.
- After the first pitch to Ware (a ball), Skip Johnson made a trip to the mound.
- Ware moved Campbell to 2b with a sac bunt at the plate (2-3 on the out).
- Dickerson singled through the right side, moving Campbell to 3b.
- Hansen reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice, scoring Campbell. The relay throw to 1b was close but late. Coach Garrido argued the call to no avail.
- Miller singled up the middle, moving Hansen (who was off with the pitch) to 3b.
- Evatt struck out swinging.
- 29-pitch inning for Jungmann. Wow. He'd thrown 61 pitches through the first 5 innings.
- Texas up 2-1.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Loy grounded out to 2b.
- Rowe drew a full-count walk after falling behind 0-2.
- Maitland popped out on a bunt attempt to 1b.
- Torres grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice.
- 7th inning, Baylor
- Texas sent Austin Dicharry (rhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann.
- Pinkard drew a full-count walk.
- Pinkard stole 2b on the first pitch to Hornung. The throw was in time and Pinkard slid through Tucker's tag (glove) hand, knocking the ball loose and appearing to hurt Tucker's wrist a bit.
- Hornung popped a bunt attempt up to 1b.
- Glime grounded out to the pitcher, moving Pinkard to 3b.
- Campbell popped out to ss behind 2b.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Tucker singled up the middle.
- Belt flew out to cf (in left-center).
- Kevin Lusson singled into cf, moving Tucker to 2b.
- Baylor sent Logan Verrett (rhp) to the mound, replacing Fritsch.
- Texas sent Morgan Mickan in to pinch-run for Lusson.
- Rupp struck out swinging at a low pitch out of the zone after watching two called strikes. Ouch.
- Keyes flew out to deep rf.
- 8th inning, Baylor
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson into rf, replacing Keyes.
- Ware singled through the right side.
- Dickerson moved Ware to 2b on a sac bunt down the 1b line (1-3 on the out).
- Hansen flew out to cf.
- Miller struck out looking (3 pitches: foul ball, swing and miss, called strike). Purty.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Loy singled into cf (1st pitch).
- Rowe popped out to 2b in shallow rf.
- Maitland reached on an infield single off the pitcher, moving Loy to 2b.
- Torres singled over 3b into lf, scoring Loy and moving Maitland to 2b.
- Steve Smith made a trip to the mound. Coach Garrido took advantage of the break to talk to his batters.
- Tucker reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice, moving Maitland to 3b. The relay throw from the second baseman to 1b was low and off-line. Runners at the corners, 2 out.
- Belt struck out looking.
- Texas up 3-1.
- 9th inning, Baylor
- Evatt reached on an infield single to 3b. Wow. Chopper that went under Wood's glove and was just a little too slow for Torres to get to 1b. Close play at 1b, though.
- Don Lambert went in to pinch-run for Evatt.
- Kimmey, pinch-hitting for Pinkard, grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Nice.
- Hornung flew out to lf to end the game.
- Texas wins 3-1.
Nice job on the part of the Horns today. I would've liked to see more runs come about as a result of all those hits. But, a win is a win. And, I'm a happy camper. The sweep, by the way, puts the Horns back on top in the conference race. And, if I understood Keith Moreland correctly yesterday, the tie game does get dropped (as though the game was not played at all) when calculating winning percentages to determine conference standings.
Here's the line (from GameTracker):

Texas now hosts Texas Southern on Wednesday (note: not Tuesday) before facing the Aggies for their final Big 12 series of the season. The first game of that series will be played in College Station and the weekend games will be here in Austin.
