Game 46: Texas Southern at Texas
Texas beat Texas Southern this evening 7-3. Stayton Thomas got his first start of the year (actually, I think it's his first start as a Longhorn) and earned the win to improve his record to 3-0. Cool, eh? Thomas went 5+ innings and did give up the 3 earned runs...all in the 6th, though. Through the first 5, he held the Tigers scoreless on 3 singles with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk. He did give up back-to-back-to-back-to-back (yes, really) hits to start off the 6th. Three of those runners scored (1 on a balk...1 of 3 called in the game). After the 4th single (hard-luck infield single to the pitcher!) the Horns sent Kendall Carillo to the mound. Carillo picked off a runner and induced two groundouts to end the 6th. He also pitched the 7th and 8th. So, he threw 3 scoreless innings, faced 9, and gave up 1 single while striking out 2. Austin Dicharry threw a 1-2-3 ninth (with 1 strikeout) to end the game.
Today's starting line-ups:

Here's how things played out:
- 1st inning, Texas Southern
- Stayton Thomas (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Hernandez singled (first pitch) past ss into cf.
- Dilworth flew out to rf.
- Rhone reached on an infield single to ss deep in the hole, moving Hernandez to 2b. On the play, Loy made somewhat of a desperation throw to 1b...hoping to catch the batter. But the throw was off-line, late, and dropped by Belt, which gave Hernandez time to move up to 3b (E6).
- Arredondo grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Danilo Carcamo (lhp) on the mound for Texas Southern.
- Tucker reached on a full-count walk without ever swinging his bat.
- Belt popped out to 3b in foul territory.
- Torres grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
- 2nd inning, Texas Southern
- 3-up/3-down: Derkowski popped out to rf; Sellers grounded out to 1b (p covered the bag); and Bryant grounded out to ss.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Clark grounded out to 3b.
- Rupp walked (full count).
- Keyes grounded into another 5-4-3 double play (1st pitch).
- 3rd inning, Texas Southern
- 3-up/3-down again: Mikell struck out swinging; Norris struck out swinging; and Hernandez grounded out to ss.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Loy grounded out to ss.
- Shepherd singled to lf.
- Rowe also singled to lf, moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Tucker reached on an error by ss (booted the ball) to load the bases.
- Belt singled into lf, scoring Shepherd and keeping the bases loaded.
- Torres flew out to rf (foul); sac fly scored Rowe and moved Tucker up to 3b.
- With Clark at the plate, the pitcher tried to pick Belt off at 1b. He was called for a balk which scored Rowe and moved Belt to 2b. On the balk, the pitcher threw to 1b and the throw was off-line. The first baseman took his time retrieving the ball and Belt ran all the way to 3b on the play. The Texas Southern coach argued that Belt should've had to stop at 2b on the balk and the home plate ump (Tim Henderson) initially agreed with him but they were over-ruled and Belt was allowed to stand at 3b.
- Clark went on to walk, putting runners at the corners.
- Rupp struck out looking.
- Texas up 3-0.
- 4th inning, Texas Southern
- Dilworth drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Rhone flew out to rf.
- Dilworth tried to steal 2b on the first pitch to Arredondo but was caught (2-4). He actually stole the base but slid past the bag and was tagged out by Tucker's second effort.
- Arredondo flew out to cf.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Keyes doubled over the center fielder's head.
- Loy singled to rf, moving Keyes to 3b. The right fielder threw the ball home and Loy moved up to 2b on the throw.
- Shawn Peoples (rhp) went to the mound, replacing Carcamo.
- Moldenhauer (pinch-hitting for Shepherd) drew a 4-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Tim Maitland went in to pinch-run for Moldenhauer.
- Rowe lined out to rf (sac fly), scoring Keyes and moving Loy to 3b.
- Tucker bunted down the 1b line (sac bunt), scoring Loy and moving Maitland to 2b.
- Belt doubled to the lf/cf gap, scoring Maitland.
- Torres grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 6-0.
- 5th inning, Texas Southern
- Derkowski reached on an infield single to ss.
- Sellers grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. Tucker made a nice stop and then whirled 360 ° to throw to Loy at ss. Purty.
- Bryant flew out to rf.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Clark was hit by a pitch.
- Rupp flew out to lf.
- Keyes reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice (Clark out at 2b) and stole 2b on the first pitch to Loy.
- Loy reached on an error by 3b. Keyes moved up to 3b on the play. Sorry to say, I don't remember the details of the error.
- Peoples was called for a balk with Maitland at the plate. Keyes scored and Loy moved to 2b.
- Maitland grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 7-0.
- 6th inning, Texas Southern
- Jeff Nelms (who'd gone in at rf for Mikell in the bottom of the 5th) singled to rf.
- Norris doubled into the corner, moving Nelms to 3b. That ball sure looked like it was going to go foul but it landed just fair...about 5 feet from the lf corner.
- Hernandez singled to rf, scoring Nelms and moving Norris to 3b.
- Skip Johnson made a trip to the mound.
- Shepherd was called for a balk as he threw his 2nd pitch to Dilworth. The batter swung at the pitch and appeared to fly out to rf. The home plate ump was emphatic in his balk call, though, and the runners advanced a base (Nelms scored) and Dilworth continued his at-bat. Many in the crowd did not understand what was going on as the Horns did not try to throw out the base-runners. Lots of booing ensued. I guess that's what the umps get for calling so many balks. Heh.
- Dilworth ended up reaching on an infield single to the pitcher, moving Hernandez to 3b.
- Texas sent Kendal Carrillo (rhp) to the mound, replacing Shepherd.
- With Rhone at the plate, Dilworth was caught stealing. Tucker had a bit of trouble getting the tag down and Hernandez alertly darted home to score.
- Rhone went on to ground out to ss.
- Arredondo grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 7-1.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Dakota Laufenberg (rhp) went to the mound for Peoples.
- Rowe popped out to 2b.
- Tucker reached on a 4-pitch walk and stole 2b with Belt at the plate.
- Belt walked (full count, 7 pitches).
- Torres flew out to rf. Tucker tagged up and moved to 3b.
- With Lusson (pinch-hitting for Clark) at the plate, Belt stole 2b.
- Lusson popped out to ss.
- 7th inning, Texas Southern
- Derkowski grounded out to 3b. Very nice play by Torres.
- Sellers singled off the mound and into cf.
- Bryant struck out swinging.
- Nelms struck out looking.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Rupp struck out looking (3 pitches). He was not a happy camper when the call was made.
- Keyes struck out swinging (also 3 pitches).
- Loy was hit by the first pitch (looked like his back leg on the knee) and stole 2b with Maitland at the plate.
- Maitland was also hit by a pitch (again on the back leg?...not sure).
- Loy and Maitland stole 3b and 2b (respectively, obviously) with Rowe at the plate.
- Rowe flew out to rf.
- 8th inning, Texas Southern
- 3-up/3-down: Norris grounded out to ss; Hernandez grounded out to the pitcher; and Dilworth grounded out to 2b.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Tucker popped out to 1b (in foul territory).
- Belt grounded out to 1b. The first baseman booted the ball a bit into foul territory and had to chase it down. He collected the ball and threw to the pitcher, covering 1b.
- Kevin Schuba (lhp) was sent to the mound, replacing Laufenberg.
- Torres tripled to the cf/rf gap. He flew around the bases.
- Josh Long (rhp) went to the mound, replacing Schuba.
- Kevin Lusson drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Rupp grounded out to the pitcher.
- 9th inning, Texas Southern
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson into rf (replacing Keyes) and Austin Dicharry to the mound (replacing Carrillo).
- 3-up/3-down: Rhone popped out to rf; Arredondo struck out looking (1-2 count); and Derkowski popped out to rf.
- Texas wins 7-3.
The Horns seemed a wee bit flat offensively after their explosion this weekend. But, for the most part, they took ready advantage of the opportunities they were given.
Here's the line (from GameTracker):

Texas heads to College Station for a 6:30 game on Friday. Then it's a quick turnaround back to Austin to host the Aggies at noon on Saturday (watch the game on FSN if you can't make it to Disck-Falk). They close out the series at 2 on Sunday. That game will also be on the air...on something called Fox College Sports.
