Game 43: Baylor at Texas

Just a quick update tonight. It's been a long week and I'm hoping those of you that didn't make it to the park were able to watch on TV. And, so...

Yes. Texas beat Baylor 12-4. Texas jumped on top 4-0 early. Baylor answered with 1 in the 3rd...which Texas promptly got back in the bottom of the inning. And, then Baylor slowly battled their way back into the game. With Texas ahead 5-4 going into the 7th, the Bears fell apart. Basically. They'd already committed 3 errors in the game. They committed 4 more...2 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th. They gave up 7 more runs along the way. Ouch.

Chance Ruffin (really struggling to get his stuff across tonight, according to Coach Garrido in post-game comments) managed to hold things together enough to go 6 innings and get his 7th win of the season. Austin Wood threw the final 3 innings and picked up his 11th save of the season. Kendal Volz took the loss for the Bears, dropping his record to 3-5.

Connor Rowe was the offensive star of the game for Texas. He hit a 2-run homer in the 2nd and hit singles in the 7th and 8th to drive in 3 more runs (1 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th). Sadly, he also committed a terrible faux pas in the 7th. With one out (after having stolen 3b!), he had a chance to score when Tucker hit a bunt to the pitcher. Rowe was running hard and the pitcher tried to throw him out at home. Rowe beat the throw and side-stepped the catcher who was partially blocking the plate. But, Rowe failed to step on the plate. And, he just kept going toward the Texas dug-out. Esther and I (and I'm sure many other people in the stands) were yelling at him to go back and touch the plate. The folks in the Baylor dug-out, meanwhile, were hollering at the catcher to tag Rowe. Which, he finally did...about 15 feet off the plate. Rowe out on the play. I can only guess he somehow thought he'd touched the plate. Weird, though.
