A note about tomorrow's draft

The following categories of players are eligible to be drafted in the MLB Amateur Draft (which starts tomorrow):

The list of Texas players eligible to be drafted in this year's draft:

Please note that I only included players who appeared in at least a few games this year. There are other juniors and seniors eligible who rarely (or never) played this year.

I thought Adrian Alaniz was "safe" for UT this year since he's a sophomore. But, he's 22 (born March 12, 1984, according to his TexasSports.com bio) and was apparently eligible last year as well. I wonder why nobody drafted him last year. Kenn Kasparek is just missing out on the "21 within 45 days of the draft" thing by a couple of months (born on Sept. 23, 1985, according to his TexasSports.com bio). Whew.

How likely is it that any of these players will be drafted? I don't know. Most of 'em probably will be drafted. I guess the question should be: how likely is it that they will sign after being drafted? That depends a lot on how high they go in the draft. Hunter Harris is a senior and can't come back but he's the only one on the list. I suspect Drew will go in the first round to a team that hopes they can get more power out of his bat with some work in the minors. There seems to be a lot of interest in Kyle whenever he's pitching (lots of radar guns show up behind the plate) so he'll probably go in the first round or two. I have to think Carson's stock is pretty high. Same goes for Nick. Adrian's probably also pretty high on the list. I really can't say about the rest of the gang, though. You just never know what a team is looking for. I wouldn't count on seeing most of the guys on that list in a Longhorn uniform next year.
