Quintanilla called up!
The Rockies are
calling
up Omar Quintanilla! He hit .346 with a home run, seven RBIs, three
doubles and two triples in 13 games with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Way
to go, Omar! As I post this, he hasn't even been assigned a number. But
he does have a
page
on the Rockies' web site. He's joining the team today. How cool is
that?
Later...
Omar started at ss. The Rockies snapped a 4-game losing streak to beat the
Phillies 9-2. All nine runs were scored in the 5th. In the 5th, Omar got
his first hit at the show (single, 0-1 pitch, 2 outs) and scored his first
run two batters later. He's wearing #8, by the way. And, here's a photo
from the game showing Omar throwing to 1b to try and complete a double play.
'Looks like Omar might've been taken out by Todd Pratt on the play, eh?
Ouch.

Teagarden signs, Lewis coming to UT
According to the Dallas Morning News, Taylor Teagarden has signed with the Rangers. The news brief says:
He received a signing bonus of $750,000 and an invitation to major league spring training for 2006. Teagarden is expected to go to the training facility in Surprise, Ariz., but could shortly be on his way to Class A Spokane.
And, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that UT-Arlington catcher Brett Lewis is transferring to UT. Hmmmm...

Lots of Alumni News
So, you ask, what happened to the weekly links to Huston Street's espn.com columns you promised you'd post? Well, I hadn't seen any columns since the one posted on June 20th. I looked but didn't see any. Last night I saw an op-ed from someone complaining that ESPN had moved all the "worthwhile" columnists into their pay-service area and that only the likes of Huston Street were still free. I wondered about that since they hadn't actually posted anything by him since he had the muscle strain and laid off for a week or two. But, I went to look...just to make sure. And, lo, they did post another column (on June 28th, apparently) but it wasn't listed in the archive area for his columns. Huh. So, anyway, here's the link: What the fan doesn't see.
Also of note (with respect to a few ex-Longhorns)...
- Omar Quintanilla has been back in town. He and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox have been here for a couple of days playing the Express. The trip lasts through tomorrow. I wanted to get out to the Dell Diamond to take in a game but haven't had time. Omar's doing a great job with his new team. He's scored 12 runs in 12 games.
- 'Turns out that Scott Dunn (now with the Salt Lake Stingers, the Angels' Class AAA team) will also be back in town this weekend. Also playing the Express. They're starting a 4-game series on Saturday. Sadly, I have no idea which game, if any, Scott will be starting. Bruce, if you see this and know, gimme a holler!
- J.P. Howell had a pretty bad outting during his first start back in Omaha on Tuesday. He gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 4 innings to take the loss.
- Dad asked about Tim Moss so I looked him up. He's playing for the Clearwater Threshers. They're a Class A Advanced club affiliated with the Phillies. His numbers look very good. Not surprisingly, he's leading his team with 21 stolen bases. On the other hand, there is some surprising news: he's also leading the team with 15 home runs. Cool.
Looking for info on Tim Moss made me think about looking up some of the other recent draftees. I found quite a few of "our boys" out and about:
- J. Brent Cox, Tampa Yankees (Class A Advanced, Yankees)
- Clayton Stewart, Batavia Muckdogs (Class A Short-Season, Phillies)
- Seth Johnston, Eugene Emeralds (Class A, Padres)
- Buck Cody and David Maroul, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Class A Short-Season, Giants)
- Will Crouch, Missoula Osprey (Rookie League, Diamondbacks)
- Robby Hudson, Everett AquaSox (Class A Short-Season, Mariners)
- Dustin Majewski, Stockton Ports (Class A Advanced, Athletics)
- Justin Simmons and Danny Muegge, Vero Beach Dodgers (Class A Advanced, Dodgers)
- Sam LeCure and J.D. Reininger, Billings Mustangs (Rookie League, Reds)
- Ryan Russ, Columbus Catfish (Class A, Los Angeles Dodgers)
- Curtis Thigpen, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Class AA, Blue Jays)
- Beau Hale, Frederick Keys (Class A Advanced, Orioles)
- Jeff Ontiveros, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Class A Advanced, Red Sox)
- Brandon Fahey, Bowie Baysox (Class AA, Orioles)
- Gerrit Simpson, Tulsa Drillers (Class AA, Rockies)
- Ryan France, Savannah Sand Gnats (Class A, Nationals)
- Tommy Nicholson, Birmingham Barons (Class AA, White Sox)
- Jason Aspito, Arkansas Travelers (Class AA, Angels)
- Phil Seibel appears to be recovering from Tommy John surgery; he's in the Red Sox system.
- Ryan Hubele seems to be playing in the Orioles' farm system but I couldn't find a current listing. Hmmm...
Lotsa Longhorns in the Majors and on their way there, eh? Cool.

Alumni News: J. Brent Cox
'Went looking for more info and found out that J. Brent Cox is playing with the Tampa Yankees. So, I guess that means he did sign, eh? Heh. He's only pitched in one game and the numbers are interesting:
W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB SO
James Cox 0 1 13.50 1 0 0 0 0 0.2 2 1 1 0 0 2
So, he pitched two-thirds of an inning, gave up 2 hits and an earned run. He struck out the two that he got out. And, he took the loss. Hmmm...
I found the play-by-play for the game. Things went like so (in the top of the 6th):
- Pitcher Change: James Cox replaces Steven White.
- Brendan Ryan strikes out swinging.
- Brian Martin strikes out swinging.
- Joe Mather singles on a fly ball to center fielder Rodolfo Guillen.
- With Reid Gorecki batting, Joe Mather steals (3) 2nd base.
- Reid Gorecki singles on a fly ball to center fielder Rodolfo Guillen. Joe Mather scores. Reid Gorecki advances to 2nd, on fielding error by center fielder Rodolfo Guillen.
- Pitcher Change: T. J. Beam replaces James Cox.
- Matthew Dryer flies out to right fielder Evan Tierce.
By the by, this was in a game played yesterday against the Palm Beach Cardinals. The final score was 5-1. The score was 2-1 when J. Brent left the game.

Hudson, Quintanilla, Clemens, Cox, Teagarden
Not much to report 'round here what with it being the off-season and all. But, I went looking around this evening and found a few bits of news:
- Robby Hudson (who, like Will Crouch, went un-drafted last month) signed a deal with the Mariners. Cool. He's currently on the roster with the Everett AquaSox, their Class A Short-Season farm team. I know nuthin' 'bout that team but had to do a big "Whoa!" when I saw the uniform pictured in this game report. How can anyone not love a team that'll wear that jersey? Wow.
- Omar Quintanilla was part of a trade between the A's and Rockies. He's been assigned to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. So, we won't be seeing him and Huston on the same infield anytime soon.
- Koby Clemens signed with the Astros ($380K bonus according to the Houston Chronicle). I'm not sure why but I was surprised to see that news. I guess I shouldn't have been. I wonder how much the incentive to keep Papa Clemens on the roster had to do with the negotiations? That bonus seems very high for an 8th round pick.
- I found a couple of notes that J. Brent Cox signed with the Yankees at the beginning of the month but can find no official confirmation of the news. Things that make you go hmmmm...
- No news on Taylor Teagarden signing. But, he's got Scott Boras as an agent so he may end up sitting out for a year. Ugh.
