Ice Storm 2007, Study #11

[Master Lock]
Details: 1/60 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 115mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

That's the lock on the gate at the pool. Talk about being frozen out!

Ice Storm 2007, Study #10

[Snowman]
Details: 1/200 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 200mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

This little guy (who stood about 14 or 16 inches tall) was just about the best that could be done with the snow that fell on the 16th.

UPDATE (Jan. 29, 2007). Entertainingly, here are the first two panels of today's Agnes comic strip:

Ice Storm 2007, Study #9

[Rear view]
Details: 1/60 sec at f/3.2, 64 ISO, 75mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

The rear view mirror on a Suburban. This is one of the photos that makes me very glad my car was parked in the garage for the duration!

Ice Storm 2007, Study #8

[Ice leaf]
Details: 1/80 sec at f/11, 100 ISO, 140mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

I think the branch on this tree had bent over with the weight of the ice and then this particular leaf pulled away from the ice that had frozen on it. Leaving behind an ice leaf. Cool.

Ice Storm 2007, Study #7

[Lattice]
Details: 1/30 sec at f/7.1, 200 ISO, 200mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

'Love this patio cover! If it weren't for the ice, I don't know that I'd have much of an opinion one way or the other on the criss-cross lattice thing. But, with the ice dripping through? Wow.

Ice Storm 2007, Study #6

[Ice drops]
Details: 1/40 sec at f/3.5, 125 ISO, 170mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

[Ice drops]
Details: 1/100 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 170mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

Those look like drops of water, don't they? They're drops of ice, though! Cool, eh? I don't know why the ice formed little droplets on this plant...so very unlike all the others. Weird, eh? And, cool.

Ice Storm 2007, Study #5

[Magnolia tree leaves]
Details: 1/80 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 170mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

Magnolia tree leaves. Covered in ice. At least, I think they're leaves from a magnolia tree. It's no wonder branches droop and eventually break when they've got this much ice on 'em, eh?

Ice Storm 2007, Study #4

The ice was building up yesterday but it wasn't quite as impressive as it was today. See the bush in the first photo from yesterday's post? It had a thin layer of ice on the leaves and berries...but nothing like today:

[Frozen berries]
Details: 1/100 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 200mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

[Fence top]
Details: 1/125 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 200mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

Take a close look at that second photo. It almost looks like the ice that was on those central leaves is free floating above them. Cool.

And, just to be clear, the berries in the second photo from yesterday's post are on a bush...a different bush...inside the patio area.

[Fence top]
Details: 1/60 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 85mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

The top of the patio fence on the unit next to mine. Look at that ice!

These branches are on a tree in my patio.

[Fence top]
Details: 1/50 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 200mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

That's a close-up of the top of my fence. That white, nearly see-through, thing? A layer of ice. It's a little over 1/2-inch thick. Solid ice.

Ice storm photos on the way

I went out for a walk around my complex today. I was out for nearly 2 hours and took 125 (yikes!) photos. I'll be posting my favorites here in the next few days. And, no worries...you won't have to look at anything close to 125 photos. Yes, I'm talking to you, Katie.

Snow in Austin!

A winter storm hit the area this weekend. That usually means ice here in Austin. Today, though: snow! Mostly sleet and freezing rain. But, also: snow. There is lots of ice too, though. Never fear. And, so...

A shot of the back of my house. Lots and lots of icicles:

[My house...'round back]
Details: 1/125 sec at f/4, 64 ISO, 50mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

This is a bush in the patio...right under all those icicles hanging from the patio cover. Yikes!

[Frozen red berries]
Details: 1/25 sec at f/3.5, 160 ISO, 100mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

My footprints in the snow (in the alley behind my house):

The lawn. And, some snow:

[Grass in the snow]
Details: 1/125 sec at f/3.5, 100 ISO, 175mm focal length (35mm equiv.)

An attempt to capture the falling flakes (the white blurs are actual snow flakes...sigh...):
