News and Notes - 1997
Most of the news I posted during (and immediately following) the 1997 Longhorn baseball season can be found here. If you want more current news, see my 1998 news page.
- August 28, 1997 - Another Transfer
- Closer Eric French has transferred to Texas A&M and will not
lose any playing eligibility.
- August 9, 1997 - Who's Leaving...Who's Staying
- Joey Hart, Seth Spiker, and Charley Carter have all
decided to leave Texas. Hart will transfer to Grayson County College in
Denison, Spiker to Arkansas State, and Carter is expected to transfer to
Baylor. Brett Loeffler, Mark Cridland (drafted by the
Brewers in the 21st round of the amateur
draft), Chris Edelstein, Rad Weaver, Scott Dunn,
Brian Starcich and Matt Simpson are all returning. [Info
from the Austin American-Statesman.]
- May 2, 1997 - No Postseason
- Missouri won both games of their double-header against Iowa State
today...making it official: Texas will not be advancing to the Big 12
tournament. This marks the first time since 1978 that a Texas team will
not participate in postseason play.
- April 18, 1997 - Garage Sale
- The athletic department will be holding a Baseball Garage Sale outside
the third base fence at the Disch from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 19th
(before the A&M game). At the sale, there will be "hordes"
(do people really say things like that?) of UT baseball merchandise
including authentic jerseys, warm-ups, and other official UT apparel.
By the way, if you can't make it to the game, it'll be regionally
broadcast on FOX Sports. [Info
from The Daily
Texan.]
- April 14, 1997 - Series canceled
- This weekend's series against Iowa State was canceled due to snow and
freezing temperatures and will not be resecheduled. With the Horns'
current No. 9 standing in Big 12 play and the reduced number of games
in their conference schdule, it seems unlikely that the team will make
the Big 12 postseason tournament unless they manage to win 9 of their
last 12 games to get over .500 in Big 12 play.
- April 4, 1997 - Player Profile
- There's a
long
article in today's Texan [link dead] about Patrick Walsh.
I'm not sure how the Texan archives articles so check it out while you
can. [Update: try searching for Patrick's name in the Texan's
archives
for the month of April and you might be able find the article. The
search page seems to be in a constant state of flux...sometimes it
works, most of the time it doesn't. Good luck.]
- February 22, 1997 - Injury Update
- I got word yesterday that Justin Lee blew out his ACL when he
fell in the game against Sam Houston State
last week. He's due to have surgery in the next couple of weeks and
will probably be out for six months.
- February 9, 1997 - Injury Update
- Joey Hart is out defensively for about a week; he reinjured his
arm. David Johnson fell and twisted his ankle in yesterday's
game...a mild sprain; he's expected to be out about a week. Donny
Barker is still recovering from surgery last semester and will,
hopefully, be able to play in the near future.
- January 24, 1997 - Alumni Game News
- During the annual matchup between the Texas alumni and varsity squads,
the Longhorns will honor 124 lettermen who once graced Disch-Falk Field.
Also during the Feb. 1 exhibition, the Longhorns will honor former coach
Cliff Gustafson. The man who made "Gusball" a household name
in Austin was the Longhorns' skipper for 29 years before resigning in
July 1996. Some featured players who are expected to play for the
alumni are Brooks Kieschnick, pitchers Dennis Cook and Greg Swindell and
outfielders Shea Morenz and Calvin Murray. The game begins at 2 p.m.,
and it has been shortened to five innings this season. The day begins
with a hitting contest at 12:40 p.m. The ceremony honoring Gustafson is
set to begin at 1:15 p.m. Gates open at noon. For ticket information,
call (512) 471-3333. [Info from
The Daily Texan.]
