Game 12: Dallas Baptist at Texas
Dallas Baptist (who beat TCU in last year's Fort Worth Regional but lost a Super Regional tournament vs. Cal in Santa Clara) came to town this evening and gave Texas a very tough battle. The Patriots scored a quick run in the first. Texas tied things up in the 2nd. And, that's how things stood through the 12th when Texas finally put a second run across to win the game 2-1. Whew.
Here's the line (from GameTracker):

I debated back-and-forth about doing a full game report. I mean...12 innings. But, sigh...what the heck? Here goes...
| Dallas Baptist | Texas |
|---|---|
| RJ Talamantes (2b) Landon Anderson (cf) Boomer Collins (rf) Ryan Behmanesh (1b) Ronnie Mitchell (lf) Joel Hutter (ss) Duncan McAlpine (c) KJ Alexander (dh) Austin Elkins (3b) |
Mark Payton (rf) Tim Maitland (cf) Erich Weiss (3b) Jonathan Walsh (lf) Brooks Marlow (2b) Jacob Felts (c) Alex Silver (dh) Kirby Bellow (1b) Jordan Etier (ss) |
Play by play:
- 1st inning, Dallas Baptist
- Dillon Peters (lhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Talamantes doubled to the cf/rf gap. Ouch.
- Anderson flew out to lf in the lf/cf gap. Walsh had to make a long run to catch up to the ball. Talamantes tagged and moved up to 3b.
- Collins drew a 4-pitch walk.
- With Behmanesh at the plate Collins was caught stealing (1-3-6). When the throw from 1b to ss was low, Talamantes easily scored. Etier looked home but had no chance at a play so went for the out and chased Collins back toward 1b and tagged him out.
- Behmanesh went on to strike out looking.
- Texas down 0-1.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Jordan Staples (rhp) on the mound for Dallas Baptist.
- Payton tried to reach on a drag bunt but hit the ball much too hard toward the mound. Ground out to p.
- Maitland was hit by a pitch and moved to 2b when Weiss was hit by a pitch.
- Walsh flew out to cf. Maitland tagged up and advanced to 3b.
- Marlow struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Texas down 0-1.
- 2nd inning, Dallas Baptist
- Mitchell popped out to rf in shallow right-center.
- Hutter popped out to 1b along the line and just a few feet behind the fab.
- McAlpine drew a 6-pitch walk and then advanced to 2b on a balk called during Alexander's at-bat.
- Alexander also drew a 6-pitch walk. Ouch. Austin Elkins struck out swinging.
- Texas down 0-1.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Felts flew out to lf at the warning track. With the wind blowing so hard to lf, it was a little surprising that the ball didn't find a bit of a ride on out of the park. Alas...
- Silver was hit by a full-count pitch.
- After failing to get a bunt down, Bellow reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice.
- The first pitch to Etier was a bal which prompted a Dallas Baptist visit to the mound.
- Etier then lined a single into cf, moving Bellow to 2b. Bellow stumbled and fell to the ground as he rounded 2b and almost didn't make it back to the bag as the throw came back in from cf. But he managed to scramble back just in time. They took a time out, though, as the trainer went out to check Bellow out. It looked like he might've hurt his ankle or something. But, after a couple of minutes, and a visit from Tommy Harmon, he chose to stay in the game.
- Payton then loaded the bases with a 5-pitch walk.
- Maitland was hit by a the first pitch to him (!) to push the tying run across. It looked like Dallas Baptist argued that he didn't try to get out of the way of the pitch but he was plunked pretty solidly and the umps were having none of it.
- Dallas Baptist sent Andrew Elkins (lhp) to the mound, replacing Staples.
- Weiss struck out looking to end the inning.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 3rd inning, Dallas Baptist
- Texas sent Nathan Thornhill (rhp) to the mound, replacing Peters.
- Talamantes popped out to rf, Anderson grounded out to 3b (really nice charge, scoop, and throw by Weiss), and Collins struck out swinging.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Walsh struck out looking, Marlow lined out to ss, and Felts flew out to rf.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 4th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Behmanesh struck out swinging, Mitchell reached on a 5-pitch walk, Hutter struck out looking, and McAlpine struck out swinging. Nice.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Silver flew out to cf (in the lf/cf gap) and Bellow flew out to rf (in shallow right-center; rf made a long run to make the play).
- Etier singled on a soft liner into cf.
- Payton singled through the right side. Etier had to jump over the ball as it sliced past him (whew!) and moved up to 2b on the play.
- Maitland lined out to cf. Damn.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 5th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Alexander reached on a full-count 6-pitch walk.
- Dallas Baptist sent Nash Knight in to pinch-run for Alexander. (He then stayed in the game as the dh.)
- Elkins eventually popped out to 1b (after several throws to 1b to keep the runner close).
- Talamantes flew out to cf.
- With Anderson at the plate, Knight moved up to 2b on a wild pitch. Sigh...all that throwing over to 1b and then...sigh...
- Anderson went on to draw another full-count 6-pitch walk.
- After the first pitch to Collins (a ball), Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound. The entire infield was involved.
- Collins grounded out to 3b. The ball was just fair and Weiss had to make a long throw across the diamond. Nice stretch by Bellow to make the play. Whew.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Weiss grounded out to ss (nice scoop by ss).
- Walsh popped out to c (bunt attempt down the 3b line). Sigh.
- Marlow grounded out to 1b (p covered the bag).
- Game tied 1-1.
- 6th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Texas sent John Curtiss (rhp) to the mound, replacing Milner.
- Behmanesh reached on an infield single to 2b. Tough play for Marlow. He tried but there just wasn't enough time for him to field, turn, and throw to 1b.
- Mitchell grounded into a 1-6-3 double play!
- Hutter lined out to 3b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Felts flew out to rf.
- Silver popped out to 2b.
- Bellow reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Etier flew out to shallow rf. The right fielder had to make a long run and sliding catch to make the out.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 7th inning, Dallas Baptist
- McAlpine popped out to 3b (just off the mound toward 3b).
- Knight flew out to lf in foul territory. Nice catch by Walsh.
- Elkins drew a full-count 6-pitch walk and stole 2b with Talamantes at the plate.
- Talamantes popped out to 2b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Dallas Baptist sent Michael Smith (rhp) to the mound, replacing Elkins.
- Payton grounded out to ss on a high bouncer fielded right at 2b. Nice play by the ss.
- Maitland and Weiss went down swinging.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 8th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Texas sent Parker French (rhp) to the mound, replacing Curtiss.
- Anderson singled up the middle.
- Collins moved Anderson to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt. Anderson rounded 2b and was almost caught off the base on a quick throw from 1b to ss. But, he just beat the throw back to the bag. So close! Ah well.
- Behmanesh grounded out to 1b (p covered bag), moving Anderson to 3b.
- Mitchell grounded out to ss.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Walsh grounded out to 2b. Marlow flew out to lf. Felts flew out to lf.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 9th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Hutter grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- McAlpine grounded out to p. Nice play by French to snag the ground ball headed to 2b.
- Knight grounded out to 2b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Silver grounded out to 3b.
- Bellow struck out looking.
- Etier grounded out to 2b. Really nice diving stop and throw by 2b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 10th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Elkins grounded out to p. Bellow made a nice stretch to catch the throw from the p that was offline toward the UT dugout in front of the runner. Good concentration.
- Talamantes grounded out to 2b.
- Anderson grounded out to ss.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 10th inning, Texas
- Payton grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- Maitland grounded out to 2b.
- Weiss struck out swinging.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 11th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Collins popped out to 2b in shallow rf toward the rf line.
- Behmanesh struck out swinging.
- Mitchell reached on an infield single to ss. Etier had a tough time on the play. If he'd managed to field and throw smoothly, he might have had a chance to make the out at 1b but the ball was a little too hot to handle smoothly. Base hit.
- Hutter grounded out to 2b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 11th inning, Texas
- Walsh grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Marlow popped out to 2b in shallow rf.
- Felts struck out swinging.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 12th inning, Dallas Baptist
- Texas sent Corey Knebel (rhp) to the mound, replacing French. This was Knebel's first action since the previous Tuesday when he'd tweaked a muscle. In his shoulder, I think. Nice to see him back on the mound.
- McAlpine struck out swinging.
- Knight lined a double into the lf/cf gap.
- Elkins popped out to lf.
- Talamantes flew out to cf (toward right-center).
- Whew.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 12th inning, Texas
- Silver reached on a bloop single into cf.
- Texas sent Taylor Stell in to pinch-run for Silver.
- Bellow moved Stell to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Etier reached on an intentional walk.
- Payton reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice, moving Stell to 3b. Payton just barely beat out the relay throw. Yikes!
- With Maitland at the plate, Payton moved up to 2b (first pitch). Defensive indifference as DBU didn't even really look at Payton.
- Maitland hit an infield single deep in the hole at ss to score Stell. The ss tried to catch Payton at 3b for the tag (and 3rd out) but Payton just stopped running, giving Stell plenty of time to score ahead of the out. The ss was very deep in the hole and really had no chance at getting the throw to 1b in time to catch Maitland. But, since the out at 3b wasn't a force, he really had no chance there, either. Poor guy. Good for Texas, though!
- Texas wins 2-1.
Nice win for the Horns against a Dallas Baptist team that made it to the Super Regional round last year and was returning a big chunk of that really good team.
Next up? Loyola Marymount at home. Hook 'em!
