Game 10: Texas at Tennessee (Houston College Classic)
Once again, I listened to this afternoon's game on the radio and this report is based on that broadcast. The Horns had a miserable 1st inning and came up just short as they worked hard to recover. They lost to Tennessee 4-5.
Here's the line (from GameTracker):
![[Final line score]](http://www.joanna.org/hook-em/pics/120303_line.jpg)
The lineups:
| Texas | Tennessee | |
|---|---|---|
| Mark Payton (rf) Tim Maitland (cf) Erich Weiss (3b) Jonathan Walsh (lf) Christian Summers (dh) Jacob Felts (c) Kevin Lusson (1b) Jordan Etier (ss) Brooks Marlow (2b) |
Zach Luther (3b) Zach Osborne (ss) Chris Pierce (lf) Drew Steckenrider (1b) Chris Fritts (cf) Jared Allen (rf) Davis Morgan (dh) Ethan Bennett (c) Will Maddox (2b) |
And, here's how things played out:
- 1st inning, Texas
- Zack Godley (rhp) on the mound for Tennessee.
- Payton singled into lf on the first pitch to start off the game!
- Maitland popped out to the catcher (bunt attempt).
- With Weiss at the plate, Payton moved up to 2b when the first pitch got away from the catcher. Not sure if it was ruled a wild pitch or a passed ball.
- Weiss reached on a 4-pitch walk.
- With Walsh at the plate, both runners advanced a base on (another?) wild pitch as the ball got away from the catcher.
- Walsh went on to strike out swinging.
- Summers grounded out (on a check swing) to 3b.
- Two left in scoring position.
- 1st inning, Tennessee
- Hoby Milner (lhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Luther walked on 4 pitches. Ouch.
- Osborne reached on a fielder's choice (sac bunt attempt). He bunted the ball toward the pitcher who fielded and tried to get the lead runner at 2b. The throw was too low and skipped into cf. E1. Luther safe at 2b and Osborne at 1b.
- Pierce reached on a bunt single down the 3b line. Weiss stayed at 3b to take a potential throw from the pitcher but Milner failed to field the ball. Wow.
- Steckenrider flared a single into lf, scoring Luther and Osborne. Pierce moved up to 2b.
- Fritts bunted down the 3b line. This time, Milner fielded and threw the ball to 3b in time to get the lead runner out. Steckenrider moved up to 2b.
- Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases and prompt a visit to the mound by Skip Johnson.
- Morgan singled through the left side, scoring Steckenrider and Fritts. Allen moved up to 2b.
- Bennett struck out looking. For the 2nd out of the inning. Whew.
- Maddox grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas down 0-4.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Felts hit a ball off the top of the lf fence (single). The left fielder caught the ball on one hop off the fence and gunned it to 2b to catch Felts for an out. Single. Ouch, ouch, ouch.
- Lusson lined out to lf.
- Etier flew out to lf.
- Texas down 0-4.
- 2nd inning, Tennessee
- Luther grounded out to ss (1st pitch).
- Osborne also grounded out to ss.
- Pierce flew out to cf.
- Yeah.
- By the way, no pitch count today. I have no confidence that the radio broadcast minus Craig Way is anywhere close to accurate.
- Texas down 0-4.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Marlow reached on a standing double into the rf (I think) corner. Yes!
- Payton flew out to deep cf. Marlow tagged up and advanced to 3b.
- Maitland reached on an infield single to 1b, scoring Marlow! Maitland bead out the pitcher to the bag as the first baseman had a tough time fielding the ball.
- Weiss grounded out to 1b, moving Maitland to 2b.
- Walsh grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- Texas down 1-4.
- 3rd inning, Tennessee
- Steckenrider flew out to rf.
- Fritts struck out swinging (full count...10 pitches, I think).
- Allen popped out to 2b.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Summers struck out looking after fouling off a pitch.
- Felts lined out to 3b.
- Lusson grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- Texas down 1-4.
- 4th inning, Tennessee
- Morgan flew out to rf down the line.
- Bennett popped out to 1b in foul territory. Nice play by Lusson.
- Maddox flew out to shallow lf (toward center). Walsh made a nice sliding catch on the play.
- That makes 11 in-a-row after that miserable start to things. Nice.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Etier was hit by a pitch after being down 1-2.
- Marlow moved Etier to 2b on a 3-4 sac bunt.
- Payton grounded out to ss, moving Etier to 3b.
- With Maitland at the plate, Etier tried to steal home and was thrown out (1-2). Wow. Really? Apparently, yes.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 5th inning, Tennessee
- Luther singled into lf. Too bad.
- Osborne squared to bunt, pulled the bat back, and smoked a double past 3b and into the lf corner, scoring Luther.
- Which prompted a pitching change. Texas sent John Curtiss (rhp) to the mound, replacing Milner.
- Pierce flew out to rf.
- Steckenrider reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Fritts grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Texas down 1-5.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Maitland grounded out to the pitcher.
- Weiss grounded out to ss.
- Walsh singled down the rf line. He tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown out (9-6?) by the right fielder who played the bounce off the wall down the rf line perfectly. Sigh...
- Texas down 1-5.
- 6th inning, Tennessee
- Allen struck out swinging.
- Jake Rowland (pinch-hitting for Morgan) struck out looking.
- Bennett popped out to 3b (foul).
- Texas down 1-5.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Tennessee moved Steckenrider to rf, sent Parker Wormsley in at 1b (taking Allen's spot in the lineup), and sent Wes Walker in at c (replacing Bennett).
- Collin Shaw (pinch-hitting for Summers) singled into rf. Nice!)
- Felts doubled off the wall in lf, scoring Shaw. The left fielder went for the catch and could not get to the ball which bounced hard back toward the infield, giving Felts plenty of time to reach 2b and Shaw time to score, by th time Tennessee could catch up to the ball.
- Lusson grounded out to 3b, moving Felts to 3b.
- Etier grounded out to the pitcher. Felts still at 3b.
- Marlow singled into cf (!), scoring Felts. Nice.
- Payton struck out looking.
- Texas down 3-5.
- 7th inning, Tennessee
- Maddox singled into rf.
- Luther lined out to cf.
- With Osborne at the plate, Maddox moved up to 2b on a balk. The radio guys weren't really sure what happend but Curtiss was in his motion and then just stepped out of it and didn't throw the pitch home. Weird.
- Osborne drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound.
- With Pierce at the plate, Tennessee tried a double steal. Felts gunned to 2b, catching Osborne stealing (2-4). Maddox safe at 3b on the play.
- Pierce struck out swinging.
- Texas down 3-5.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Nick Williams (rhp) to the mound for Tennessee, replacing Godley.
- Maitland tried to bunt his way aboard but could not beat out the throw from 3b.
- Weiss singled through the right side (I think).
- With Walsh at the plate, Weiss moved up to 2b on a wild pitch.
- Walsh struck out swinging.
- Shaw grounded out to 2b.
- Texas down 3-5.
- 8th inning, Tennessee
- Steckenrider singled into right-center.
- Fritts advanced Steckenrider to 2b on a 2-3 sac bunt.
- Wormsley struck out looking. Steckenrider was off with the pitch and stole 3b on the play.
- Rowland also struck out looking.
- Texas down 3-5. C'mon, Horns!
- 9th inning, Texas
- Felts worked the count full and drew an 8-pitch walk!
- Lusson fought off a couple of pitches but ended up flying out to rf.
- Landon Steinhagen (pinch-hitting for Etier) struck out swinging.
- Marlow (with 2 strikes against him) tripled to cf, scoring Felts!! Fritts in cf dove for the ball but did not make the catch. Time-out while Fritts, who was shaken on the play, needed to be checked out. Wow.
- Payton popped out to 2b to end the game. So sad.
- Texas loses 4-5.
Hoby Milner took the loss and moved his record to 1-2. Things got pretty exciting there at the end but the Horns came up just a bit short. It's nice to see Marlow's bat coming back to life. I hope it sticks. Those two hits (by Felts and Walsh) wherein they were gunned down at 2b as both seemed to think they'd hit sure doubles were painful. I have to say that it was nice to see the Horns battle back from the 0-4 hole...despite the eventual outcome.
Up next are the Arkansas Razorbacks tomorrow at 11 am. Hook 'em, Horns!
