Game 38: Texas at Kansas

Texas beat Kansas 9-0 last night. I was not able to watch the whole game but tuned in to the Kansas CBS-Sports stream during the exciting 6th inning...exciting for Texas, that is. The score was 2-0 with the bases loaded when we tuned in. Jacob Felts drew a walk to score the third run of the day. Brandon Loy then singled to left center, scoring two more. Felts held up to see if the ball would be caught or it would've been a double. Mark Payton then reached on a hard bunt single between the pitcher's mound and 1b. The first baseman (I think) tried to catch Felts off the 3b bag but threw wildly, allowing Felts to score and putting the runners at 2b and 3b. That was the 2nd error of the inning...I'd missed the first one. Tant Shepherd then hit a sac fly to rf, scoring Loy. Weiss (who'd started things off with a single, according to the announcers) then flew out to end the top half of the 6th. Texas was up 7-0 by the time all the dust had settled.

The Horns scored 2 more in the 9th. With one out, Cohl Walla (pinch-hitting) was hit by a pitch. Tim Maitland went in to pinch-run for him. A ground out to 3b, moved Maitland to 2b and a single by Paul Montalbano scored him. Jordan Etier then tripled to the rf/cf gap, scoring Montalbano. Sweet.

The offensive stars of the game were Loy (who went 4-for-5 with a run scored and 2 batted in) and Etier (who went 3-for-5 with a run scored and 2 batted in). The team combined for 12 hits on the day with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Taylor Jungmann started and went 8 innings to earn his 9th win of the year. Going into the 8th, he'd allowed only 1 hit while striking out 8 and walking 1. The first batter grounded out and as soon as the announcers commented on the 8 strikeouts versus 1 walk, Jungmann walked his second batter of the day. And, then his third. A pop-out and another strikeout (giving him 9 on the day) got the Horns out of trouble. Nathan Thornhill pitched the 9th. The Jayhawks went: ground out, double, fly out, ground out to end the game.

Here's a link to the TexasSports.com report: No. 7 Baseball blanks Kansas, 9-0. There are a couple of nice quotes at the end. check it out.

All-in-all, a really nice game for the Horns. Here's hoping this evening's game goes equally well. Hook 'em!
