The Horns came from behind for the second game in-a-row to beat the UT-Pan American Broncs 4-2. The line:

The line-ups:

Austin Dicharry saw his first action on the mound since April of last year. It was great to see him out there but things did not go as well as the Horns would've hoped. But, he did have a couple of flashes. And, despite allowing 4 aboard in the 1st, only one run scored. After giving up a lead-off triple (hit to the deepest part of the field in the cf/rf gap) and a walk in the second, the Horns pulled Dicharry. The Broncs only got 4 more aboard the rest of the way...and, obviously, none of them scored. The final numbers for the pitchers (by my counts):
- Austin Dicharry: 1+ inning, 8 batters, 2 runs (both earned), 4 hits (1 triple, 1 double, 2 singles), 1 strikeout, 2 walks, 1 balk (rusty and nervous?), 31 pitches (16 for strikes).
- Nathan Thornhill: 2 innings, 8 batters, 1 hit (a double), 1 strikeout, 22 pitches (18 for strikes).
- Josh Urban: 4 innings, 13 batters, 1 hit (a single), 6 strikeouts, 1 walk, 50 pitches (32 for strikes).
- Kendal Carrillo (win, now 3-0): 1 inning, 3 batters, 9 pitches (5 for strikes).
- Corey Knebel (12th save): 1 inning, 3 batters, 2 strikeouts, 12 pitches (10 for strikes).
Nice.
And, here's how Texas scored their runs...
- 3rd inning
- With 2 out, Montalbano drew a full-count walk.
- Loy doubled over the left fielder's head to the warning track, scoring Montalbano.
- Payton grounded out. The pitcher just got his glove on the ball that was headed up the middle and deflected it toward where the shortstop had been. The shortstop made a nice adjustment to get back to the ball and threw Payton out at 1b.
- Horns down 1-2.
- 6th inning
- With 1 out, Payton (who went 3-for-4 on the night) lined a double into rf. Really it was a single but he stretched it into a double...just barely. The throw from rf beat him to 2b but was a couple of feet toward cf and Payton just beat the tag. Whew. The Broncs argued the call to no avail.
- A balk with Shepherd at the plate moved Payton to 3b.
- Shepherd lined out to 3b. Payton was only a few feet off the bag and got back to 3b before the third baseman could get there. Whew.
- Weiss doubled down the lf line, scoring Payton.
- Walsh lined out to lf.
- Game tied 2-2.
- 8th inning
- Montalbano drew his 2nd full-count walk of the night.
- Loy moved Montalbano to 2b on a 5-4 sac bunt.
- Payton hit a ground-rule double over the rf fence...near the 375 sign, scoring Montalbano. That's only the 2nd ground-rule double I've seen hit over the outfield fence since Texas installed the new field turf.
- Shepherd flew out to cf. Payton tagged and moved up to 3b.
- Weiss was intentionally walked. Interesting.
- Cohl Walla (pinch-hitting for Walsh) singled through the left side, scoring Payton and moving Weiss to 2b.
- The Horns sent Dex Kjerstad in to pinch-run for Walla who's still hobbling a bit.
- The Broncs sent Leo Chang (submariner rhp) to the mound.
- Etier was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
- Silver hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice to end the inning.
A couple of interesting notes: Montalbano reached twice on walks and scored both times; Payton scored the other two Texas runs after reaching on doubles in his final two at-bats.
The Horns now travel to Kansas for Thursday-Friday-Saturday games. Their next home game is scheduled for April 26th against Texas State. Hook 'em, Horns!
