Game 52: Texas at Missouri
Road game. Which means I listened to the radio broadcast (Craig Way and Bill Little with the call) and this report is based on the said broadcast.
UPDATE. I did not bother to read through this and posted quickly. Mistake. Lots of typos. Sorry. I think I've now fixed most of 'em.

- 1st inning, Texas
- Nick Tepesch (rhp) on the mound for Mizzou.
- Cohl Walla (cf) grounded out to 2b.
- Brandon Loy (ss) reached on an infield single to ss. Loy beat out a slow grounder. Yeah!
- Tant Shepherd (1b) flew out to rf. Nice play by Mizzou's right fielder.
- Loy stole 2b on the 3rd pitch (called strike) to Keyes.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) doubled to right-center (4th pitch), scoring Loy.
- With Russell Moldenhauer (dh) at the plate, Keyes was caught stealing 3b. Damn.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 1st inning, Mizzou
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for the Horns.
- Dane Opel (cf) singled up the middle.
- Conner Mach (2b) struck out swinging.
- Aaron Senne (1b) reached on an infield single on a high chopper to ss. Loy fielded behind 2b and tried to backhand a throw to Etier. Etier tried to make a barehanded catch but couldn't catch the ball. Too bad. Mizzou was going 'hit and run' on the play and Loy should probably have gone for the out at 1b instead of trying to turn the double play.
- Brett Nicholas (c) singled through the left side. Opel fell rounding 3b and was caught up and tagged out trying to get back to 3b (the out went 7-5-6). Yes! Great job by Loy to cut the ball off and charge at Opel.
- Jonah Schmidt (rf) struck out swinging. Whew!
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Moldenhauer struck out swinging (foul tip caught by catcher).
- Cameron Rupp (c) flew out to rf at the warning track.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) drew a full-count walk.
- Jonathan Walsh (lf) flew out to cf.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Mizzou
- Eric Garcia (ss) singled through the left side.
- Andreas Plackis (dh) hit into a 3-6-3 double play! Nice play by Shepherd at 1b for Texas!
- Jesse Santo (3b) struck out swinging.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Jordan Etier (2b) flew out to lf (hiiiiiiiigh fly ball).
- Walla reached on an infield single off the pitcher (I think...it was a little unclear).
- Loy (going for a sac bunt? dunno...they only mentioned him squaring to bunt on first pitch...too busy talking about post-season play coming up...ack! my earrrrrrrssssssss...as he worked the count full) struck out swinging.
- Shepherd flew out to cf.
- The pitcher threw to 1b trying to keep Walla close about 42 times during Loy and Shepherd's at-bats. Wow. Between that and Way's detailed analysis of how Texas might be at the start of an 11-day road trip, I almost gave up on the game at this point. Sigh...
- Texas up 1-0.
- 3rd inning, Mizzou
- Ryan Gebhart (lf) reached on a 5-pitch walk. 'Love it when the #9 batter reaches on a walk.
- Rather amazing how many Mizzou batters are watching a 1st-pitch strike and then getting on so far this evening.
- Opel struck out looking.
- Gebhart was caught stealing (2-6) during Mach's at bat.
- Mach struck out looking.
- Fifth strikeout of the day for Jungmann!
- Texas up 1-0.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Keyes drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Moldenhauer reached on a bunt single down the 1b line, moving Keyes to 2b. The pitcher slipped and fell as he was trying to field the ball. I know the pitcher slipped but it's funny to think of Moldenhauer reaching on a bunt single. Heh.
- Rupp flew out to cf (almost got the ball past the center fielder). Keyes tagged and moved up to 3b on the play.
- Lusson struck out swinging.
- Walsh reached on a bloop single into shallow cf, scoring Keyes and moving Moldenhauer to 2b.
- Etier doubled (!) down the lf line, scoring Moldenhauer and Walsh.
- Etier stole 3b on the 3rd pitch to Walla.
- Walla reached on an infield single between 1b and 2b. The first baseman went for the ball and the pitcher was late covering the bag. The throw was off-line anyway. Etier scored on the play.
- Loy struck out swinging.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 4th inning, Mizzou
- Senne homered over the rf wall down the line. First pitch.
- Nicholas singled through the right side.
- Nicholas moved to 2b on a passed ball (I think...could've been a wild pitch) with Schmidt at the plate.
- Schmidt flew out to rf.
- Garcia reached on a fielding error by 2b, moving Nicholas to 3b. Etier dropped the sharply-hit ball. Bill Little thought he might've been thinking about trying to throw the runner out at 3b. What? Yikes!
- Plackis grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Yes!
- Texas up 5-1.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Shepherd grounded out to 3b.
- Keyes flew out to cf.
- Moldenhauer singled through the right side.
- Rupp flew out to lf.
- Texas up 5-1.
- 5th inning, Mizzou
- Santo grounded out to 1b (3-1, p covered bag).
- Gebhart struck out looking.
- Opel grounded out to 2b.
- 1-2-3. Nice. 9 pitches, by the way. Double nice.
- Texas up 5-1.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Lusson struck out looking.
- Walsh lined a single into rf. 9th hit of the game for Texas.
- Walsh stole 2b on the first pitch to Etier.
- Etier struck out looking.
- Walla grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas up 5-1.
- 6th inning, Mizzou
- Mach hit a homerun over the lf fence. Ouch. 2nd lead-off homer of the day for the Tigers.
- Senne lined a single into rf.
- Skip Johnson made a trip to the mound. His second of the day. I did not remember to note his earlier visit so can't tell you when it happened.
- Nicholas singled through the left side, moving Senne to 2b.
- That's three hits apiece for Senne and Nicholas. Ouch.
- Schmidt struck out looking. Whew.
- Garcia grounded into a 4-6-3 double play!!!
- Texas up 5-2.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Loy reached on a bunt single down the 3b line!
- Shepherd squared to bunt on the first pitch but then swung away on the 2nd and flew out to rf.
- Mizzou sent Phil McCormick (lhp) to the mound, replacing Tepesch.
- Keyes reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice.
- Mizzou made another pitching change and sent Zack Hardoin (lhp) to the mound, replacing McCormick.
- Moldenhauer was wrung up by the 3b ump (standing out at 2b) as he tried to check his swing. I absolutely loathe the fact that the Big 12 only uses 3 officials for conference games. Ugh.
- Texas up 5-2.
- 7th inning, Mizzou
- Plackis struck out looking.
- Santo grounded out to ss.
- Gebhart struck out looking!
- Another 1-2-3 inning. And, the 9th strikeout of the day for Jungmann.
- Texas up 5-2.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Mizzou sent in yet another pitcher...Ryan Clubb (rhp) in to replace Hardoin.
- Rupp reached on a first-pitch single...radio guys did not say to where.
- Lusson moved Rupp to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Insert another mound visit...but no pitching change.
- Walsh struck out looking.
- Etier drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Walla popped out to ss.
- Texas up 5-2.
- 8th inning, Mizzou
- Texas sent Chance Ruffin (rhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann.
- Opel struck out swinging on 3 pitches.
- Mach struck out swinging!
- Senne goes down swinging.
- Ruffin strikes out the side!
- Texas up 5-2.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Mizzou sent Jeff Scardino (lhp) to the mound, replacing Clubb.
- Loy tried to get a bunt down on a 2-2 count but it went foul. Strikeout.
[UPDATE (Monday, May 24). It turns out that Loy re-injured his shoulder when he stole 2b earlier in the game and by this time, it was hurting so much, he could not swing through the ball. Thus the bunt attempt with 2 strikes.] - Shepherd struck out looking...making him the only Texas batter who failed to reach base today. So sad.
- Keyes flew out to lf at the warning track.

- 9th inning, Mizzou
- Texas did their usual late-inning defensive switch, moving Walla to lf, sending Connor Rowe in at cf (taking Walsh's spot in the lineup), and sending Kyle Lusson in at rf (replacing Keyes).
- Nicholas struck out swinging (foul tip, 3 pitches).
- Schmidt also struck out swinging!! Also 3 pitches.
- Garcia worked the count full and then doubled into left-center.
- Garrison McLagan (lefty, pinch-hitting for Plackis) struck out swinging!
- Great job by Ruffin to earn his 13th save of the year.
- Texas wins 5-2.
The Horns gave up too many hits but got out of trouble by turning 3 double plays. Nice. And, then Ruffin was just lights out. Jungmann struck out 9. Ruffin struck out 6. Scary stuff. Nice game all-in-all. Same teams tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
