Game 51: Louisiana Tech at Texas, Game 2
The Horns looked much more comfortable on the mound and at the plate in the 2nd game of today's double-header as they beat Louisiana Tech 13-2. The Horns actually held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first 8 innings of the game. The line...
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Louisiana Tech | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 1 |
Texas | 1 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 4 | 3 | - | 13 | 13 | 0 |
I wasn't going to post a full-on game report 'cause it was a long day. But I see that they didn't post a boxscore or play-by-play for today's 2nd game on the TexasSports.com site. And, a lot of stuff happened. So, I've decided to go that extra mile for you people. 'Not sure you're worth it! Heh. Here goes...
- 1st inning, Bulldogs
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Kyle Roliard (lf) grounded out to 2b.
- Mark Threlkeld (3b) struck out swinging.
- Alex Williams (1b, big guy) grounded out to 2b.
- Nice 1-2-3 inning to start the game.
- 1st inning, Horns
- Trevor Petersen (rhp) on the mound for LaTech. The public address announcer let us know, as the warm-up tosses were being thrown, that there was a change in the line-up...that the starting catcher for the Bulldogs was Drew Thomas instead of Will Alvis, who'd been announced before the game started. Which would prove to be an interesting note later in the game when Alvis went in to pitch...would've been rather difficult to pitch to himself, eh? Heh. Anyway...
- Cohl Walla (cf) hit a soft liner into cf for a single.
- Brandon Loy (ss) tried to bunt Walla over but (uncharacteristically) could not get the bunt down and ended up flying out to rf.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) lined a single into lf, moving Walla to 2b.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) flew out to lf.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) singled through the right side, scoring Walla and moving Shepherd to 2b.
- Cameron Rupp (c) popped out to 3b.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Bulldogs
- Devon Dageford (rf) grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Joey Ford (2b) flew out to rf.
- Justin Gordy (dh) lined out to rf. Nice play by Keyes.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Horns
- Kevin Lusson (3b) singled into the cf/rf gap.
- Jonathan Walsh (lf) popped out to 1b on a bunt attempt. Ouch.
- Jordan Etier (2b) hit into a 5-4-3 double play. Double ouch.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 3rd inning, Bulldogs
- Clint Stubbs (cf, yes...Drew Stubbs younger brother...Clint played at UT early in his career before transferring to LaTech) drew a full-count 7-pitch walk.
- Drew Thomas (c) struck out swinging. On the play, Stubbs took off for 2b and was thrown out (2-4) for a double play!
- Ashton Hughes (ss) drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Roliard lined out to lf.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 3rd inning, Horns
- Walla flew out to ss in shallow lf.
- Loy was hit hard on his shoulder by a full-count pitch.
- Shepherd reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice.
- Moldenhauer drew a full-count walk, moving Sheperd to 2b.
- Keyes hit a homerun over the rf fence...at the folks who sit on the buses near the 375 sign.
- Insert visit to mound by LaTech.
- Rupp struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Texas up 4-1.
- 4th inning, Bulldogs
- Threlkeld and Williams struck out swinging.
- Dageford reached on a soft liner into cf.
- Ford singled up the middle, moving Dageford to 2b.
- Gordey (who, by the way, rather looked like a young Chuck Norris in the photo they showed on the scoreboard) popped out to 2b in shallow rf.
- Texas up 4-0.
- 4th inning, Horns
- Lusson popped out to cf.
- Walsh flew out to lf.
- Etier was hit by a pitch. On his hand, it appeared.
- Coach Garrido took an offensive timeout to talk to Walla. 'Looked like maybe he was giving Etier some time after the hbp. Dunno.
- Walla lined the first pitch right at the left fielder for the 3rd out. Shucks.
- Texas up 4-0.
- 5th inning, Bulldogs
- Texas moved Etier over to ss and sent Jordan Weymouth in at 2b. When I saw Weymouth heading out, I thought he was taking Etier's place in the line-up after he'd been hit by that pitch in the previous half-inning. But, then we saw Etier at ss so weren't sure what was going on. Was Loy hurt by the hbp in the 3rd? No idea. Anyone know?
- Stubbs and Thomas struck out looking.
- Hughes grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas up 4-0.
- 5th inning, Horns
- Weymouth was hit by a pitch! Wow. Third hbp in as many innings. And, all of 'em were hard pitches.
- Shepherd drew a 4-pitch walk, moving Weymouth to 2b. Shepherd was very nearly hit by the 2nd pitch to him, by the way.
- LaTech sent Will Alvis (rhp) to the mound, replacing Petersen.
- Moldenhauer drew his 2nd full-count walk in as many plate appearances, to load the bases.
- Keyes hit a sac fly to the warning track in cf, scoring Weymouth and moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Shepherd scored and Moldenhauer moved up to 2b on the first pitch to Rupp (a wild pitch).
- Rupp singled into lf, moving Moldenhauer to 3b.
- Lusson struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Walsh also struck out swinging (foul tip, 1-2 count). \
- Texas up 6-0.
- 6th inning, Bulldogs
- Fourth 1-2-3 inning of the day for the Horns.
- Roliard grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Threlkeld grounded out to 2b.
- Williams struck out looking.
- I do believe that strikeout by Williams was the 100th strikeout of the year thrown by Taylor Jungmann. I was told early in the game that Jungmann was 7 strikeouts away from 100 and that was the 7th.
- Texas up 6-0.
- 6th inning, Horns
- Ford moved into rf. Dan Breazeale went into the game at 2b (taking Dageford's spot in the lineup).
- Etier popped out to 2b.
- Walla struck out looking on 3 pitches.
- Weymouth grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 6-0.
- 7th inning, Bulldogs
- Breazeale grounded out to 2b.
- Ford lined a double down the rf line.
- Gordey struck out swinging.
- Stubbs drew a full-count 9-pitch (!) walk.
- After an offensive timeout (batter talked to 3b coach), Thomas grounded out to the pitcher on an "excuse me" sort of swing.
- Texas up 6-0.
- 7th inning, Horns
- Jonathan Mire went in at 1b for the Bulldogs, replacing Williams.
- Shepherd promptly reached on a throwing error by ss that was charged to the new first baseman who was unable to dig out the low throw. I dunno. Maybe the first baseman should've been able to grab the ball.
- Shepherd stole 2b on the 3rd pitch to Moldenhauer.
- At that point, with the count 2-1 to Moldenhauer, LaTech sent Jamelle Clements (lhp) to the mound, replacing Alvis.
- Moldenhauer went on to draw a full-count walk.
- Keyes grounded out to 1b (unassisted), moving Shepherd to 3b and Moldenhauer to 2b.
- LaTech then sent Hughes from ss to p and sent Taylor Terrasas into the game at ss. No more DH for the Bulldogs. By the way, I think this was Hughes first appearance ever on the mound for LaTech. Heh.
- Rupp fought off a full-count pitch and managed to hit a ground ball past ss into cf, scoring Shepherd and Moldenhauer. Nice.
- Lusson then lined out to cf. Nice running catch by Stubbs in cf.
- Walsh singled through the right side, moving Rupp to 3b.
- Etier drew a 5-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Walla singled up the middle, scoring Rupp and Walsh, and moving Etier to 3b.
- Weymouth drew a 5-pitch walk to re-load the bases.
- Shepherd (10th batter of the inning) hit into a 4-unassisted fielder's choice to end the inning.
- Texas up 10-0.
- 8th inning, Bulldogs
- Texas sent Andrew McKiraha (lhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann (who'd thrown 96 pitches by my count and probably would've stayed in the game if they hadn't wanted to give McKirahan some time.
- Hughes grounded out to 2b.
- Roliard popped out to cf. Walla was basically in lf when he caught the ball about 10 or 15 feet in front of Walsh. Kinda weird.
- Threlkels grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas up 10-0.
- 8th inning, Horns
- Moldenhauer lined a double to the cf/rf gap.
- Keyes singled up the middle, scoring Moldenhauer.
- Rupp drew a 5-pitch walk
- Lusson grounded out to 1b (unassisted), moving Keyes to 3b and Rupp to 2b. Lusson hit a pop-up behind the plate during his at-bat, by the way, that the catcher had a shot at. But, he twisted around and just could not catch the ball. I didn't ever see them score an error against the catcher on the play but I noticed at the end of the game that the scoreboard listed 2 errors for the Bulldogs so I think they might've scored an error on the catcher for his non-catch. Which I don't really agree with (very tough catch) but this is the only place I can see where they might've charged a second error to LaTech.
- Walsh singled into rf, scoring Keyes and moving Rupp to 3b.
- Etier singled into lf, scoring Rupp and moving Walsh to 2b.
- Walla flew out to rf.
- With Weymouth at the plate, Walsh moved up to 3b and Etier to 2b on a wild pitch.
- Weymouth struck out swinging, though (1-2 count). The catcher dropped the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Texas up 13-0.
- 9th inning, Bulldogs
- Texas sent Stayton Thomas (rhp) to the mound, replacing McKirahan.
- Mire hit a double off the rf wall.
- Breazeale drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Philip Menou (pinch-hitting for Ford) struck out swinging.
- Terrasas doubled (just barely fair) down the 3b line, scoring Mire and moving Breazeale to 3b.
- Stubbs grounded out to ss, scoring Breazeale and moving Terrasas to 3b.
- Thomas struck out swinging on 3 pitches to end the game.
- Texas wins 13-2!
Kevin Keyes was the offensive hero of the day, hitting one homerun in each of the games and driving in 8 runs...6 of them in the 2nd game! Once the bats came back to life, things went along quite nicely for the Horns so...all-in-all, not a bad day at Disch-Falk. The Horns now head to Missouri for their final series of the regular season.
One more thing...today was Senior Day for three Texas players: Riley Boening, Kyle Lusson, and Russell Moldenhauer. I wonder what happened to Boening this year. It seems like he was back up to throwing condition in the fall and was expected to contribute quite a bit this season but he never did make an appearance on the mound. Dunno. Lusson has played in 42 games this year, starting in 13. Moldenhauer's had a great season. He's appeared in 44 games (starting 40) and is currently hitting 348 on the year with 6 homeruns. Way to go, Seniors!
Hook 'em!
