Game 40: Oklahoma State at Texas
Texas played yet another really nice game this afternoon, beating Oklahoma State 5-0. The second complete-game shutout in-a-row for Cole Green. Very cool. The line:

Green gave up 4 singles. He had a no-hitter through the 5th...very nice! By my count, he threw 103 pitches (67 strikes) as he faced 34 batters. He hit one batter, walked 2, and struck out 5. His counterpart (Tyler Lyons, lhp) also pitched a complete game but...for the loss.
Cameron Rupp, just like yesterday, hit a 3-run homer in the first to give Texas the lead. Purty. And, the Horns scraped a couple of single runs across in the 3rd and 4th to put the game away.
Here's how things played out...
- 1st inning, OSU
- Cole Green (rhp) on the mound for Texas...sporting the high-socks look I so like!
- Davis Duren (2b) reached on an error by 1b and moved up to 2b...the hard-hit grounder careened off Shepherd's glove into foul territory and to the retaining wall down the rf line.
- Tom Belza (ss) tried to bunt Duren to 3b but popped out to the catcher...a soft bloop that only got about 10 feet off the ground.
- Kevin David (c) grounded out to the pitcher.
- Dean Green (1b) was hit by a pitch on his shin.
- Mark Ginther (3b) struck out swinging on 3 pitches.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Tyler Lyons (lhp) on the mound for the Cowboys.
- Cohl Walla (lf) popped out to 2b.
- Brandon Loy (ss) lined into cf for a single.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) followed suit, moving Loy to 2b.
- Cameron Rupp (c) hit a homerun that cleared the fence a few feet left of the Green Monster in cf. Purty!
- Which prompted a visit to the mound for the Cowboys.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) grounded out to 2b (1st pitch).
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) struck out swinging but reached on a dropped 3rd strike/wild pitch. The ball careened all the way to the backstop on the right side. The catcher might've actually had a play at 1b but he threw high.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) struck out swinging. The catcher, again, could not hold onto the ball but got to it (this time it got away from him on the 3b side about 12 feet) and threw to 1b to complete the out.

- 2nd inning, OSU
- Dane Phillips (dh) grounded out to 1b.
- Nico Rosthenhausler (lf) lined out to rf. Nice running catch to his left by Keyes.
- Kevin Chambers (rf) grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas up 3-0.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Connor Rowe (cf), Jordan Etier (2b), and Walla all grounded out to 3b. No, really. They did.
- Texas up 3-0.
- 3rd inning, OSU
- Dusty Harvard (cf) had a nice 9-pitch at-bat but ended up grounding out to 2b.
- Duren also grounded out to 2b. Etier made a fantastic diving stop behind 2b, jumped up, and fired the ball to 1b for the out. Very nicely done!
- Belza struck out swinging.
- Texas up 3-0.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Loy struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Shepherd lined into lf for a single. Then, with Rupp at the plate, he stole 2b and then 3b. On the steal of 2b, he was actually picked off but the throw from 1b to ss was a bit high and late. Whew. It could've (should've?) been scored as an E3.
- Rupp hit a sac fly to the alley in lf (caught by cf), scoring Shepherd.
- Keyes struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Texas up 4-0.
- 4th inning, OSU
- David grounded out 1-4-3. He hit a liner that Green almost managed to field but went off his glove to Etier who threw to 1b for the out.
- Green reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Ginther got ahead 2-1 which prompted a visit to the mound. He flew out to lf on the next pitch.
- Phillips grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Texas up 4-0.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Moldenhauer was hit by a 1-1 pitch...grazed his shoulder I think.
- Lusson moved Moldenhauer to 2b on a 1-4 sac bunt.
- Moldenhauer then moved to 3b on a balk...before the first pitch to Rowe.
- Rowe grounded out to 2b. The infield was pulled in so Moldenhauer had no chance to score.
- Etier hit a soft liner into cf for a single, scoring Moldenhauer. Etier was then picked off 1-3-6 to end the inning.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 5th inning, OSU
- Rosthenhausler flew out to cf.
- Chambers popped out to ss in shallow lf.
- Harvard lined out to lf.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Walla reached on an infield single off the third baseman's glove.
- Loy moved Walla to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Shepherd lined out to rf. The right fielder dove and made a nice catch. Walla tagged up and advanced to 3b on the play. Frank Anderson argued, to no avail, that he left 2b early.
- Rupp flew out to cf.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 6th inning, OSU
- Duren singled through the left side for the first hit of the game by the Cowboys.
- Belza drew a 4-pitch walk, moving Duren to 2b.
- Skip Anderson made a visit to the mound during David's at-bat.
- David struck out swinging.
- Green struck out looking. And, then argued the call with the home plate ump. He did not get tossed, though, so must've been calmer in his arguing than he looked from my high perch in the stands.
- Duren stole 3b during Ginther's at-bat. Lusson made a great effort to catch a high throw from Rupp, keeping Duren at 3b.
- Ginther then popped out to lf in shallow lf.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Keyes struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Moldenhauer grounded out to ss.
- Lusson also grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 7th inning, OSU
- Phillips grounded out to ss.
- Rosthenhausler flew out to lf at the line. Nice catch by Walla.
- Chambers grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Rowe grounded out to 3b.
- Etier struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Walla lined out to cf. Nice play by the center fielder.
- Texas up 5-0.

- Harvard grounded out to 2b.

- Belza popped out to shallow cf.

- Loy reached on a surprise bunt down the 3b line!
- Shepherd moved Loy to 2b on a 5-3 sac bunt.

- Keyes struck out swinging (1-2 count). He tried to check his swing but "no go" ruled the home plate ump. The catcher dropped the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 9th inning, OSU
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson into rf, replacing Keyes.
- Green hit a hard grounder off the mound into cf for a single.
- OSU sent Carlos Saade in to pinch-run for Green.
- Ginther hit into a lovely 4-6-3 double play.
- Phillips singled up the middle.
- And, Rosthenhausler struck out looking (3 pitches) to end the game.
- Texas wins 5-0!
Yet another nice game played by the Horns. Andrew McKirahan got up in the bullpen 'round about the 6th inning for awhile. Hoby Milner and Chance Ruffin were both up in the 9th but...none of them made it into the game. Texas starters have thrown four complete games in the last four Big 12 games. Pretty cool. Can/will Brandon Workman keep it up tomorrow?
Today's win proved to be the 600th for Coach Garrido. He's the first Division I coach to reach 600 wins at two different schools. Congrats to him! Though he, of course, gives all credit to his players and assistant coaches. 'Funny to think he's been here so long. I was pretty convinced he was a bad hire when Texas picked him. I just knew he was only gonna hang around for a year or two. Heh. Never happier to be wrong about something!
The Horns go for the sweep tomorrow at 1. Hook 'em!
