Game 39: Oklahoma State at Texas
Texas played a great game tonight as they beat Oklahoma State 14-1. Yep...fourteen to one. 'Twas really something special. The line:
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Oklahoma State | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 0 |
Texas | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 0 | 2 | - | 14 | 14 | 0 |
Taylor Jungmann pitched the third complete game in-a-row for Texas in Big 12 play. Third. In. A. Row. Suh-weet! By my count, he threw 107 pitches (71 strikes) and gave up 1 earned run on 4 hits (2 singles, 2 doubles). He threw 1 wild pitch, walked 2, and struck out 8. At one point, he (and his teammates) sat down 14 batters in-a-row. He then gave up a walk before getting the final 4 batters of the game out. The Cowboys went down in order 5 times. The Horns only went down in order once this evening.
The offensive heros of the day were Cameron Rupp who hit a 3-run homer that hit the top of the scoreboard near the UFCU ad and Tant Shepherd who hit a 2 run homer that cleared the fence in front of the scoreboard. The 2, 3, and 4 batters for Texas had a great game; they combined for 11 of the runs scored, 6 of the hits, and 4 of the team's 5 walks. Very nicely done.
And, so...here's how things played out...
- 1st inning, OSU
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas. OSU, by the way, had a lot of lefties in their line-up. And, they have a lot of left-handed pitchers.
- Davis Duren (2b) started things off by grounding out to 2b.
- Tom Belza (ss) doubled through the left side and then moved up to 3b on a wild pitch.
- Kevin David (c) drew a 5-pitch walk, putting runners at the corners with one out.
- Nico Rosthenhausler (lf) hit into a picture-perfect 6-4-3 double play. First pitch.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Thomas Keeling (lhp) on the mound for the Cowboys.
- Cohl Walla (lf) flew out to the deepest part of the field in left center. The center fielder made a nice long run to catch the ball just shy of the warning track at the 405 sign.
- Brandon Loy (ss) drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) then drew a full-count walk.
- Cameron Rupp (c) hit that homerun I mentioned off the top of the scoreboard in left-center. Wow.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- Russell Moldenhauer struck out looking (2-2 pitch).
- Texas up 3-0.
- 2nd inning, OSU
- Mark Ginther (3b) singled past the ss into cf.
- Dane Phillips (dh) popped out sky high to 3b. The ball went straight up at the plate and was fielded by Lusson about 10 or 15 feet from home plate. I wasn't sure the ball was ever gonna come down!
- Dean Green (1b) grounded into a 1-6-3 double play. Shepherd made a great diving stop to his right and threw to the ss. Jungmann charged hard to 1b and got there in time to turn the double play. Very nicely done!
- Texas up 3-0.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Kevin Lusson (3b) struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Connor Rowe (cf) doubled down the rf line.
- Jordan Etier (2b) struck out swinging (3 pitches). Rowe stole 3b on the 2nd pitch to Etier, by the way.
- Walla singled past a diving second baseman into cf, scoring Rowe.
- Walla was then caught stealing (2-6) to end the inning.
- Texas up 4-0.
- 3rd inning, OSU
- Jungmann struck out the side: Kevin Chambers (rf) went down looking, Dusty Harvard (cf) did likewise, and Duren struck out swinging.
- Texas up 4-0.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Loy popped out to shallow cf.
- Shepherd flew out to fairly shallow rf.
- Rupp popped out foul to 1b. A very nice play by the first baseman who fielded the ball at the Texas dugout rail. He had to lunge back at the last second to catch the ball.
- Only 1-2-3 inning of the day for the Horns.
- Texas up 4-0.
- 4th inning, OSU
- Belza lined into rf for a single.
- David doubled through the left side, moving Belza to 3b.
- Rosthenhausler grounded out to 3b. Lusson did a nice job to field, look the runners back to 2b and 3b, and then take his time to throw to 1b for the out. [Aside, there was a nice article about his troubles on Tuesday in today's issue of the Daily Texan: Texas baseball not satisfied despite wins by Austin Ries.]
- Ginther hit a sac fly down the rf line, scoring Belza and moving David to 3b. Keyes made a nice catch in foul territory but the ball was just too deep to keep the runners from advancing.
- Phillips struck out looking.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Keyes struck out looking (2-2 count, 6 pitches).
- Moldenhauer struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Lusson doubled off the diving center fielder's glove into the lf/cf gap.
- Rowe tripled off the green monster in straightaway cf, scoring Lusson.
- Etier drew a full-count walk and stole 2b on the 2nd pitch to Walla. The catcher did not make a throw to 2b...he was too busy making sure Rowe did not take off for home.
- Walla struck out swinging (1-2 count). The catcher dropped the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Texas up 5-1.
- 5th inning, OSU
- Green grounded out to 2b. Etier made a nice back-handed stop as he was moving toward 2b before throwing to 1b for the out.
- Chambers flew out to lf, down the line and foul.
- Harvard grounded out to 2b. Another nice play by Etier to charge on a slow high-bouncer that went over the pitcher.
- Texas up 5-1.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Loy singled through the left side past a diving third baseman.
- Shepherd tried to bunt Loy to 2b but popped the bunt up. Luckily it was a soft pop-up that fell harmlessly in the Bermuda Triangle between 1b, 2b, and the pitcher. Result: single for Shepherd and Loy at 2b, nobody out.
- Rupp was then hit by a 1-2 pitch (on his foot) to load the bases.
- Keyes doubled to lf, scoring Loy and Shepherd and moving Rupp to 3b. The left fielder dove for the ball but could not make the play and the ball rolled to the wall.
- Which prompted a pitching change. Chance Deason (lhp) went to the mound, replacing Keeling.
- Moldenhauer singled up the middle, scoring Rupp and Keyes.
- Lusson then hit a soft liner to 2b. Moldenhauer was too far off the bag and was doubled off easily as he tried to scramble back to 1b. Too bad.
- Rowe popped out to 1b to end the inning.
- Texas up 9-1.
- 6th inning, OSU
- Duren flew out tot lf.
- Belza grounded out to 2b. Shepherd did that thing again where he started after a ball that was too far away from 1b but he reversed course and hurried back to 1b in time to receive the throw for the out. It looks like he's getting more comfortable at 1b.
- David struck out swinging. Rupp dropped the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Texas up 9-1.
- 6th inning, Texas
- OSU sent Matt Peck (rhp) the mound, replacing Deason.
- Etier popped out to ss behind 3b. Nice play by the shortstop.
- Walla struck out swinging (1-2 count, 6 pitches).
- Loy drew a 5-pitch walk and advanced to 2b on a wild pitch with Shepherd at the plate.
- Shepherd also drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Rupp doubled to the alley in rf, scoring Loy and Shepherd.
- Keyes singled up the middle, scoring Rupp.
- Moldenhauer grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice to end the inning.
- Texas up 12-1.
- 7th inning, OSU
- Rosthenhausler struck out looking.
- Ginther grounded out to ss.
- Philips grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 12-1.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Lusson popped out to lf after working the count full and fouling off a couple of pitches.
- Rowe lined out to lf. The left fielder made a nice running catch.
- Etier lined into cf for a single.
- Walla flew out to lf. Another nice play by the left fielder who made an over-the-shoulder catch as he was running hard in the direction of the lf corner.
- Texas up 12-1.
- 8th inning, OSU
- Green grounded out to 2b.
- Chambers struck out swinging.
- Harvard drew a full-count 7-pitch walk, giving OSU their first baserunner since they left a runner stranded at 3b in the 4th.
- Duren struck out looking after fouling off a few pitches.
- Texas up 12-1.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Loy lined into cf for a single.
- Shepherd hit a homerun over the lf fence in front of the scoreboard.
- Rupp flew out to cf in the cf/rf gap.
- Keyes struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Moldenhauer flew out to rf.
- Texas up 14-1.
- 9th inning, OSU
- Belza grounded out to 1b (p covered bag).
- David lined out to cf...a nice run by Rowe.
- Josh Botts (pinch-hitting for Rosthenhausler) grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
- Texas wins 14-1.
Jungmann just seemed to get better and better as the game went on. And, everyone in the field looked sharp and ready to play. And, the bats...the bats! Jungmann actually got some run support this evening. Truly, this game was a thing of beauty. Sigh...
Same teams, same place, tomorrow at 2. Be there! Hook 'em!
