Game 28: Texas at Oklahoma
I don't have ESPNU at home so wasn't sure I'd be able to watch today's game. I also had brunch plans and didn't know how long that would go. As it turns out, I finished with brunch at about 1:30. I ended up driving out to my folks' house while listening to the first couple of innings on the radio...jotting down notes as I drove. 'Got to my folks' house in time to watch the rest of the game. Well worth the drive out as the Horns beat the Sooners 9-3!
Brandon Workman pitched a great game. He threw 8 innings and gave up the 3 runs (all earned). He gave up 4 hits (a single, 2 doubles, and a homerun). He also struck out 8 and only gave up one walk. Chance Ruffin went in for the 9th and threw a 1-2-3 inning.
Offensively, the Horns looked better today. The stars were Kevin Keyes and Cameron Rupp. Keyes went 3-for-5 with 2 homeruns, a double, 2 rbi, and 3 runs scored. Rupp went 4-for-5 with a double, 3 rbi, and a run scored. Tant Shepherd also hit a homerun, making 3 for the Horns today. And, Connor Rowe hit a couple of doubles (and scored both times).
And, here's how things played out...
- Texas, Top of the 1st
- J.R. Robinson on the mound for OU.
- Cohl Walla (lf) singled to lf.
- Brandon Loy (ss) advanced Walla to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) grounded out to the pitcher, moving Walla to 3b and Loy to 2b. The pitcher almost waited too long to throw to 1b just barely beat Keyes.
- Cameron Rupp (c) singled through the left side, scoring both runners.
- Kyle Lusson (dh) struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Texas up 2-0.
- OU, Bottom of the 1st
- Brandon Workman on the mound for Texas.

- OU sent Jason Chowning to the mound, replacing Rocha.
- Russell Moldenhauer (pinch-hitting for Kyle Lusson) was hit by a 2-2 pitch. OU better hope Chance Ruffin doesn't get into the game. Geesh.
- Rowe advanced the batters on a 1-3 sac bunt. On the play, the ball was high and at his head. He ducked and got the ball on the bat while trying to protect himself. He was dodging the ball and heading toward 3b, thinking the ball was foul. But, it stayed in the field of play and the pitcher threw down to 1b for the out. Wow.
- The first pitch to Kevin Lusson was a ball and OU changed pitchers again, sending Jack Mayfield to the mound.

- Rowe grounded out to 3b.

- Loy drew a 4-pitch walk. He squared to bunt on each pitch.
- Shepherd popped out (softly) to the pitcher (bunt attempt).

- Rowe stole 3b on the 4th pitch to Kevin Lusson (a ball taking the count to 3-1).
- Lusson reached on a fielder's choice. He hit a ground ball to 2b. The second baseman tried to throw Rowe out at home but the tag was just late. Run scored.
- Lusson was caught stealing (2-4) with Etier at the plate.
- Etier struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Texas up 8-2.

- Seitzer drew a 4-pitch walk. First walk of the day.
- Which prompted a Skip Johnson visit to the mound.
- White flew out to lf.
- Johnson hit into a 3-6-1 double play. Etier was also at 1b and falling as the ball got there from Loy. Yikes. Funny to see that double play twice in one game, though. It happens so very rarely.
- Texas up 8-2.
- Texas, Top of the 8th
- Why is ESPNU showing us the SEC standings? How 'bout the Big 12? Sigh...

- Keyes hit a homerun to straightaway cf over OU's version of the green monster!!!
- Rupp struck out swinging (1-2 count). First time he didn't get a hit today.
- Moldenhauer drew a full-count walk.
- Texas sent Tim Maitland in to pinch-run for Moldenhauer after the first pitch to Rowe.
- Rowe struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Kevin Lusson lined out to cf.
- Texas up 9-3.
- OU, Bottom of the 9th
- Texas sent Chance Ruffin to the mound, replacing Workman. 'Wonder if he'll wait for 2 outs to hit a batter or go with the first batter?
- Buechele out on a soft liner to Etier. Initially, they ruled that he dropped the ball as he dove for it but a quick check with the other umps and they ruled that he caught it. Coach Golloway argued the call and was thrown out of the game. The only angle they had on TV was not great but it looked like Etier did catch the ball.
- Seitzer struck out swinging.
- White flew out to rf (1st pitch).
- Hard to believe that Ruffin did not bean a batter. Huh.
- Texas wins 9-3 to sweep the Sooners on the road!
Here's the line...from GameTracker:
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Texas | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 9 | 11 | 0 |
Oklahoma | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
Hmmm...the Sooners had an error? I went back through the GameTracker play-by-play and found that the catcher was charged with an error on the play where Rowe scored in the 2nd inning. I did not see that play...I was still on the road at that point so I'm not sure what happened. I remember Moreland or Way saying the throw from the catcher to 2b on the sb attempt was high...did it actually get away from the fielder, making it too hard to throw back home? Not sure. Shrug.
The Horns now come home and will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday and Wednesday. Hook 'em!
