Game 51: Alabama A&M at Texas
Texas won the second game of the double-header against Alabama A&M 9-3. Taylor Jungmann was only due to pitch 2 or 3 innings but he had a perfect game going into the 6th, so he stayed in longer than planned. Sadly, the lone hit he gave up in the 6th was a slow dribbler to 2b. Oh well. It'll be better if he throws that perfect game during the post-season, doncha think? Heh.
Today's starting line-ups for Game 2:
| Alabama A&M | Texas |
|---|---|
|
1 LaDale Hayes, cf 2 Marcus Spencer, rf 3 Kenneth Townsend, 1b 4 Alton Ellison, dh 5 Kency Duarte, 3b 6 Bernard McKinney, 2b 7 Jerard Thomas, lf 8 Chris Jennings, c 9 Fabian Harper, ss - Kellen Toone, p |
1 Michael Torres, 3b 2 Travis Tucker, 2b 3 Brandon Belt, 1b 4 Kevin Lusson, dh 5 Cameron Rupp, c 6 Kevin Keyes, rf 7 Brandon Loy, ss 8 Connor Rowe, cf 9 David Hernandez, lf - Taylor Jungmann, p |
Yes, David Hernandez started in lf. Not a single ball made it to lf, though, so his defensive skills out there were not tested. Only two balls even made it out of the infield in the 2nd game for Alabama A&M, though. A fly out to cf in the 4th and a single up the middle in the 9th. Yikes.
Here's how things played out:
- 1st inning, Alabama A&M
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- 3-up/3-down: Hayes grounded out to 1b (unassisted); Spencer did the same; and Townsend struck out looking.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Kellen Toone (rhp) on the mound for AAMU.
- Torres was hit by a pitch (on the thigh, I think).
- Tucker moved Torres to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt. Torres surprised us all by hustling hard around 2b and making it all the way to 3b on the sac bunt! Wow. I think that's the first time I've ever seen anyone do that. Wow.
- Belt scored Torres on a sac fly to cf.
- Lusson grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Alabama A&M
- 3-up/3-down: Ellison struck out swinging; Duarte grounded out to the catcher (chopper at the plate); and McKinney struck out looking.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Rupp singled through the left side.
- Keyes struck out swinging.
- Loy flew out to cf.
- Rowe drew a full-count walk, moving Rupp to 2b.
- Hernandez flew out to cf. AAMU did make a visit to the mound with Hernandez at the plate, by the way.
- 3rd inning, Alabama A&M
- 3-up/3-down: Jerard Thomas struck out swinging; Jennings grounded out to 2b; and Harper struck out looking.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Torres drew a 4-pitch walk and then stole 2b on the 2nd pitch to Tucker.
- Tucker also drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Belt advanced the runners on a sac bunt down the 3b line. The pitcher fielded and made a very high throw that sailed over the first baseman and out of play. Torres scored, Tucker moved to 3b, and Belt ended up at 2b on the error.
- Lusson doubled to the cf/rf gap, scoring Tucker and Belt.
- Rupp grounded out to 2b, moving Lusson to 3b.
- Keyes singled through the left side, scoring Lusson.
- Loy flew out to rf.
- Keyes stole 2b with Rowe at the plate.
- Rowe flew out to rf.
- Texas up 5-0.
- 4th inning, Alabama A&M
- 3-up/3-down: Hayes flew out to cf (Rowe made a very nice looooonnnng run to make the out); Spencer struck out swinging; and Townsend struck out looking.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Hernandez reached on a throwing error by 3b. I'm not sure Hernandez actually stepped on the bag as he ran past the first baseman but he was called safe by the ump (Tom Jenkins).
- Hernandez stole 2b on the first pitch to Torres.
- Torres lined out to cf.
- Tucker doubled to cf, scoring Hernandez.
- Belt was hit by a pitch (the ball seemed to just graze his arm).
- Kevin Lusson drew a 5-pitch walk to load the bases.
- AAMU sent A.J. Campbell (rhp) to the mound, replacing Toone.
- Rupp hit into a 5-3 double play. The third baseman fielded, stepped on 3b to force Belt for the 2nd out and fired to 1b for the 3rd.
- Texas up 6-0.
- 5th inning, Alabama A&M
- 3-up/3-down: Ellison grounded out to the pitcher; Duarte grounded out to ss; and McKinney struck out looking.
- 5th inning, Texas
- AAMU made some defensive switch-a-roos: J.T. Thomas went in at 1b, replacing Townsend; Hayes moved to lf from cf; and Maverick Scott went in at cf, taking Jerard Thomas' spot in the line-up.
- Keyes drew a full-count walk.
- Loy reached on a 1-4 fielder's choice (sac bunt attempt that he hit a bit too hard toward the pitcher).
- Rowe reached on an error by 2b. The second baseman booted the ball to his right past the ss into shallow lf. On the play, Loy moved up to 3b and Rowe to 2b.
- With the infield pulled in, Hernandez lined out to cf (sac fly, Loy scored).
- Torres singled up the middle, scoring Rowe.
- Tucker flew out to lf.
- Texas up 8-0.
- 6th inning, Alabama A&M
- The end of a good thing.
- Scott reached on an infield single to 2b. A slow dribbler. Such a sad way to break up a perfect game. The bull-pen, despite the plan to let a lot of guys get some work in, was silent to this point. I'm sure Texas was going to let Jungmann stay on the mound as long as he was having such a fantastic game. But, once he gave up that single, the bull-pen got to work and started warming up a couple of pitchers.
- Jennings struck out swinging.
- Scott was caught stealing (2-6) on the first pitch to Harper.
- Harper struck out swinging.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Only 3-up/3-down of the day on the Texas offense: Belt flew out to cf; Lusson grounded out to 1b (unassisted); and Rupp grounded out to ss.
- 7th inning, Alabama A&M
- Texas sent Brandon Workman (rhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann.
- 3-up/3-down: Hayes grounded out to 2b; Grant Mattix (who'd pitched in the earlier game) pinch hit for Spencer and struck out looking; and J.T. Thomas struck out swinging.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Keyes flew out to cf. Long run and nice catch by the center fielder.
- AAMU sent Hayes from lf to the mound, replacing Campbell. They also moved Duarte from 3b to lf and sent Chris Hernandez (who also pitched in the first game) in at 3b (taking Ellison's spot in the line-up). So, they lost the dh spot.
- Loy hit a high fly ball to rf, down the line. The right fielder caught up to the ball but dropped it. Loy made it all the way to 3b on the error.
- Rowe popped out to ss.
- Hernandez flew out to lf. Nice over-the-shoulder catch.
- 8th inning, Alabama A&M
- Texas sent Kendal Carrillo (rhp) to the mound, replacing Workman. They also sent Tim Maitland into lf (replacing Hernandez) and Kyle Lusson into rf (replacing Keyes).
- 3-up/3-down: Hernandez grounded out to 1b (unassisted); Duarte struck out swinging; and McKinney struck out swinging.
- 8th inning, Texas
- AAMU sent Paolo Glaude into rf (taking Mattix's spot in the line-up.
- Torres hit a home run way over the rf fence...just left of the Wendy's sign.
- Tucker flew out to cf.
- AAMU sent Phillip Guthrie (rhp) to the mound for Hayes.
- Belt flew out to rf in the cf/rf gap. The center fielder almost caught the ball in front of the right fielder. They bumped into each other and we had to wait to see who held up their glove to find out who'd caught the ball.
- Lusson popped out to 3b.
- 9th inning, Alabama A&M
- Texas sent Sam Stafford (lhp) to the mound. Nice to see the freshman. I can't remember the last time he went into a game.
- Diego Lopez (pinch-hitting for Maverick Scott) grounded out to the pitcher.
- Jeremy Bush (pinch-hitting for Jennings) grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Robert Scott (pinch-hitting for Harper) reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Guthrie (the pitcher, recall) also reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Glaude also reached on a 5-pitch walk to load the bases. Skip Johnson, by the way, made a visit to the mound after the 4th pitch to Glaude.
- J.T. Thomas' at bat: ball, called strike, swinging miss, ball, foul ball, foul ball, ball, ball. RBI.
- Texas sent Andrew McKirahan (lhp) to the mound, replacing Stafford.
- Hernandez in his 2nd at-bat of the year (his 1st having come in the 8th inning) singled up the middle, scoring 2.
- Duarte grounded out to 2b, ending the game.
- Texas wins 9-3.
Taylor Jungmann had a great game. So did the defense, overall. The Horns faced the minimum through the first 8.2 innings. Very very nice.
Here's the line (from GameTracker):

And, now it's on to the Big 12 tournament. The field has been set. I haven't had time to look at the schedule but my mom called to tell me the Horns are scheduled for afternoon games throughout the tournament. Bah. I'll have to try and listen while I'm at work. I'll be back with more regarding the tournament tomorrow. Hook 'em!
