Game 13: Washington State at Texas
I wasn't able to get out to Disch-Falk today. But, I managed to listen to most of the game on the radio. And, I think I caught most of the highlights:
- Texas scored their first 2 in the 2nd. Bradley Suttle scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Chais Fuller and then Nick Peoples scored from 3b on a double by Kyle Russell.
- In the 3rd, Preston Clark hit a solo shot over the green monster...the 35th time it's been done. Woo hoo!
- In the next inning, he picked off a runner at 1b!
- In the 4th, with 1 out, Chais hit a triple off the lf wall but was stranded at 3b.
- Jeff Miller started off the 5th by hitting a home run over the lf wall for Washington State. Two batters later, Greg Lagreid did the same thing. Ouch. Both homers came off starter James Russell.
- In the bottom of the 5th, Travis Tucker reached on an error and then stole 2b. But, Jordan Danks, Preston Clark, and Bradley Suttle all struck out so he was stranded there. By the by, the Cougars had replaced their starter at the start of the Texas half of the inning. The change worked well for them, eh?
- Joseph Krebs replaced James Russell in the 6th and had a 1-2-3 inning.
- In the bottom of the 6th, Nick singled and then was almost picked off. He had a good jump, though, and slid in as the ss dropped the throw from 1b (scored as a stolen base). Chance Wheeless bunted for a single up the 3b line, moving Nick to 3b. Nick then scored on another squeeze bunt by Chais.
- Joseph threw another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 7th. This time with two strikeouts, to boot!
- Texas also went down in order in the bottom of the inning. Shucks.
- Randy Boone took over for Joseph in the 8th and threw his own 1-2-3 inning. The 3rd out was a come-backer to Randy. He fielded and tossed high to Chance at 1b who then had to tag the runner out. WSU argued the call but, as usual, came out on the losing end of their argument with the guys in blue.
- In the bottom of the 8th, Travis reached on a 2-out single. He stole 2b but was stranded there. Poor guy. Stranded twice.
- Washington State started off the 9th with a single (hit by Travis Coulter). Jared Prince followed with a fielder's choice. On the play, Bradley Suttle dived, knocked the ball down, and tried to get the runner at 2b. Travis Tucker was not able to keep his foot on the bag, though. Runners at 1b and 2b, no outs. Jim Murphy then flew out to rf. Not knowing any better, Travis Coulter tried to tag up at 2b and get to 3b. Kyle gunned him down, though, to complete a double play! The final batter then popped out to 2b. Wow. That double play sure did get Craig Way excited! Heh. Sorry I missed seeing it.
Whew. I was called away from my desk about 20 seconds after the game ended. I'm so glad I got to hear that double play call in the 9th. I do wish I coulda been there. But...alas. I also missed the bulk of the post-game commentary. Tomorrow's broadcast will apparently be Internet-only. They'll have their local FM broadcast in Disch-Falk but if you're driving around Austin tomorrow, or hoping to listen while you're at your nephew's birthday party, or something like that, you're out of luck.
Ha! I just realized I didn't ever include the score anywhere in this post. So sad. Texas wins 4-2. Hook 'em!
