CWS - Day 2
Georgia v. Rice. That Eddie Degerman is one entertaining pitcher to watch. He sure is a spastic fella (and I mean that "spastic" thing in the very best way possible). He fidgets and talks to himself and roams the area around the mound. I suspect it can be rather nerve-racking for opponents. Not to mention his own team and coaches! And, nevermind his throwing motion. Wow. Both pitchers had no-hitters going into the 4th when Rice finally got a couple of hits off Brooks Brown and scored the first run of the game. 'Course that doesn't really tell the story. Both starting pitchers were a bit wild and walked several batters in the first few innings so we were all rather surprised that neither team had managed to score before the 4th. In the 6th, Rice loaded the bases with no outs (on two singles and a hit batter) to chase the Georgia starter. They only got one run across, though. In the 7th, Georgia finally got to Degerman: they ended his no-hitter (chasing him out of the game), scored, and went on to take a 4-2 lead. Rice went back on top in the bottom of the inning (scoring 4 of their own). See-saw city. 'Gotta love it. Rice did hold on after the 7th to win 6-4.
Miami v. Oregon State. Miami jumped out in front and would not let Oregon State into the game. It went into a rain delay as the 8th was about to start with Miami ahead 7-0. The delay lasted about 90 minutes. Sadly, as soon as the teams got back on the field, things started up right where they left off. Miami went on to win 11-1. When Oregon State blanked Stanford 15-0 in the Super Regional, I couldn't believe that was the same Stanford team that had dominated the Austin Regional so thoroughly. As I watched the game this evening, it was déjà vu. All over again! Could this possibly be the same team that beat Stanford so very soundly just a week ago? Wow.
