Now that the 2006 season is upon us, lots of people are writing about Texas baseball:
- Opening Day in San Diego by Alex Blair (Daily Texan) - Quote from Chance Wheeless: "It's important to start off out of town to get the new guys comfortable with traveling." Okay. If'n y'all say so. I still don't like having to wait so long for a chance to see my Horns in person.
- Firey Foursome Returns to Take the Mound, Lead Longhorns Back to Omaha by Ricky Treon (Daily Texan) - A note of caution from Augie Garrido that I think we all need to keep in mind as we look forward to the new season: "Rice's pitching staff fell apart the year after they won the national championship. You just don't know until the season starts."
- Texas Pitching Experience by Alex Blair (Daily Texan) - Coach Garrido has never led a team to back-to-back championships. His take on what happened to the last few teams to try: "Those teams couldn't win because they were too focused on victory."
- 'Scuze Me While I Catch This Fly by Alex Blair (Daily Texan) - I like the first line of the story: "Reid Brees is likely still wondering how Drew Stubbs caught that ball." Heh. Very very true.
- Look For Longhorns to Take Tough Big 12 Conference by J.J. Wells (Daily Texan) - A brief look at the conference.
- Texas Baseball All-Star Roster, 1960-2006 by Alex Blair (Daily Texan) - It's a good list...check it out.
- Texas' Glove Affair by Cedric Golden (Austin American-Statesman) - When asked what it will take to get the new infield to work well together, Coach Garrido said: "It varies from team to team. This is being treated as an evaluation process, and we have the next two months or so to find the right combinations that will give us the best chance to be successful."
- Probable Batting Order by Cedric Golden (Austin American-Statesman) - A look at the likely starters
- Questions Facing the Longhorns by Cedric Golden (Austin American-Statesman) - A few short notes about the team.
- Texas Looks Loaded Again by Joseph Duarte (Houston Chronicle) - Classic Garrido quote (which I believe also appeared in one of the articles linked above): "Expectations are about false realities. I have no expectations and I still fall short. If you have no expectations, you're not as disappointed as often." The article also talks briefly about Rice, Baylor, and the Aggies.
Also, of note: Phil Seibel has been invited by the Red Sox to Spring Training.
