Back to Peru today. And, my favorite place in Peru: Machu Picchu. This is Huayna Picchu...the mountain that stands guard over Machu Picchu. It's a 2 to 3 hour hike to the top and well worth the effort. You even get to go through a small tunnel near the top of the trail. If you ever visit, I heartily recommend spending the night and doing the hike up the peak early in the morning. Most people just do the day trip thing where they ride the train in from Cuzco, arrive around 11 in the morning, spend about 3 or 4 hours exploring the ruins, and then head back to the train. If you do that, there's no time to climb Huyna Picchu. And, the thing is, as soon as the train leaves in the afternoon, you feel like you've got the whole place to yourself. It's really quite wonderous standing in the quiet amongst the ruins.
