My parents moved to Peru after my Sophomore year in college and stayed there for two or three years. I went down to visit them a few times. On a couple of those occasions, we journeyed to the amazing Incan ruins at Machu Picchu (your spelling and everyone else's will likely vary...this is the one I prefer). On one of those trips, a family of llamas (mom, pop, and brand new offspring) could be found grazing among the ruins. This little fella was only a few days old and I could not resist snapping his picture.
By the way, for the non-Spanish speaking portion of the audience, the proper pronunciation of the word "llama" is "yama." That's as close as most English-speakers can come, at any rate. In Spanish, the double "l" sounds very much like a "y" to English speakers. Although, to be fair, there is some variation in different Latin American countries and it's hard for non-native speakers to pick up on the differences. Kinda like "you say tomAYto, I say tomAHto." (Actually, I say tomAYto but I guess that's not really germane to the topic at hand, eh?) Anyway, the "y" thing also goes for my last name and that's why I really got into this whole convoluted discussion. The double "l" in "Castillo" is best pronounced as a "y." So, next time I see you, I'd really rather not hear "Casti-lo," please. "Castee-yo" (with the accent on the "ee" sound) will do just fine. Thankyouverymuch.
