Comments

The Horns have rallied in the 9th a lot lately and it's been kind of a bust. Not today...today it worked. Sadly, there weren't many folks in the stands to appreciate it...due to cooler weather and the fact that it was Easter Sunday, I suspect. For those of us there, though, it was a grand game. And, so...

Game summary:

• 1st inning
  • OU:
    • Elsey lined out to cf (1st pitch).
    • Wathan went down on called strikes (2-2 count).
    • Flores popped to shallow lf (foul) -- great effort and catch by Walsh.
  • Texas:
    • Harkrider flew out to lf (1st pitch).
    • Walsh grounded out to ss.
    • Loeffler grounded out to 3b.
• 2nd inning
  • OU (2 runs, 1 unearned):
    • Bookout singled up the middle (1st pitch).
    • Hart singled to cf. Bookout moved to 2b.
    • Park hit a sacrifice bunt down the 3b line. Johnson threw wide of Gutierrez covering 1b, though, so he was safe on the error (E5) and advanced to 2b. Bookout scored. Hart moved to 3b.
    • Noles bunted for a singled to 3b (rbi). Hart scored. Park moved to 3b.
    • On the first pitch to Vidales, Noles was caught stealing (2-4).

    • Gutierrez went down swinging -- Flores had to throw to Bookout to complete the out after dropping the ball. A weird play. The ball hit Gutierrez on the leg and bounced back to the wall. 'Not sure what Gutierrez thought but he didn't break for 1b until after the catcher had retrieved the ball...easy play for the catcher.
    • Harkrider hit a homerun off the top of the fence in rf.
    • Walsh grounded out to 2b.
    • Loeffler reached on a bunt down the 3b line -- great bunt.
    • Johnson singled to cf. On the play, Elsey in cf had a tough time scooping up the ball allowing Loeffler time to score on a close play at the plate (E8). Johnson moved to 2b on the throw home.
    • Carter grounded out to the pitcher (1-3).
• 4th inning
  • OU:
    • Bookout went down swinging (0-2 count).
    • Hart singled to lf.
    • Park reached on a 1-4 fielder's choice (bunt attempt).
    • Noles reached on an error by Johnson (E5). Johnson decided to go for the out at 2b and threw high to Gutierrez forcing him to jump off the bag to make the catch.
    • Vidales flew out to cf.
  • Texas:
    • Hart lined out to lf.
    • Rumfield reached on an error by 2b (E4) -- Hart couldn't get a handle on the ball.
    • Runfield stole 2b on the first pitch to Kiemsteadt. The throw from Flores to Hart was in time but the ball came out of his glove as Rumfield slid into the tag.
    • Kiemsteadt singled to lf. Rumfield moved to 3b.
    • Gutierrez was hit by a pitch (1-1 count) to load the bases.
    • Harkrider went down swinging (0-2 count).
    • Walsh flew out to cf.

    • Flores popped up to 2b -- nice play by Gutierrez who had to run almost all the way to the rf line.
  • Texas:
    • Gutierrez walked on four pitches.
    • Harkrider grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. I don't think it was a very good call -- the second baseman was clearly off the bag when he got the toss from the shortstop (I *hate* that umps call that an out but it happens a lot) and it looked to me that Harkrider tied the throw to the first baseman. Very frustrating.
    • Walsh grounded out to 1b (3-1).
• 8th inning
  • OU:
    • Bookout singled to cf after fighting off several pitches.
    • Hart was called out on strikes (0-2 count).
    • Park went down swinging (1-2 count).
    • Noles went down swinging (1-2 count).
  • Texas:
    • Loeffler walked (3-1 count).
    • OU sent Geary in to pitch for Shackelford. Shackelford was moved into lf (taking over Vidales' spot the lineup as Vidales came out). This meant OU lost the DH so Geary was inserted into Park's spot in the lineup.
    • Johnson hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. On the play, the pitcher failed to field the ball so Johnson was safe at 1b (E1). Loeffler moved to 2b.
    • Carter went down swinging. On the play Loeffler jumped with the pitch and was thrown out quickly by Flores (2-5) for the double play.
    • Hart doubled to lf. Johnson was waved around 3b and was gunned down at the plate (7-4-2) -- interesting that the second baseman had the relay throw from lf.
• 9th inning
  • OU (1 unearned run):
    • Shackelford doubled to the rf fence.
    • Texas sent French in to pitch.
    • Montenegro reached on an error by Johnson (E5). Johnson simply misplayed the ball which ended up in lf. Shackelford moved to 3b.
    • Elsey flew out to lf -- great throw in from Loeffler kept the runners from advancing.
    • Wathan bunted past the mound on the 1b side for a single (rbi). Shackelford scored. Montenegro moved to 2b.
    • Flores hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
  • Texas (1 earned run):
    • Rumfield grounded out to 3b -- nice play by Montenegro.
    • Kiemsteadt walked (3-1 count).
    • Edelstein (pinch-hitting for Gutierrez) doubled to rf (rbi) to end the game as Kiemsteadt came all the way around to score as the right fielder had a tough time running down the ball.
