Comments
Well...I guess I can sum up the bright point of the day by pointing
out the fact that Charley Carter hit a homerun over the "Green
Monster" in cf, marking the first time since 1989 that a
Longhorn had done so during the course of a game. By the way, Scott
Bryant was the last Longhorn to achieve said feat.
Today's game was one of pure frustration. And, the difference was
determined by close calls by the umps and one of my most hated
plays: the intentional walk. And, so...
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- KSU:
- Bobier (who had me cringing the entire series every time he came
to the plate) singled the first pitch to lf.
- Marn singled to cf and hustled to 2b on the throw in. Bobier
moved to 3b.
- Schesser tripled to cf (2 rbi) -- Loeffler tried to charge in and
catch the ball but didn't get a good enough jump on the ball which
ended up bouncing over his head.
- Poepard grounded out to ss (rbi).
- Fereday popped up to 2b.
- Bichelmeyer grounded out to 2b.
- Texas:
- Loeffler singled to lf.
- Walsh singled up the middle. Loeffler moved to 2b.
- Harkrider bunted for a single down the 3b line (nice play).
Walsh moved to 2b and Loeffler to 3b.
- Cridland singled to rf (2 rbi). Harkrider moved to 3b.
- Johnson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. No rbi as Harkrider
scored.
- Spiker grounded out to ss.
- 2nd inning
- KSU:
- Ayers flew out to cf.
- Buell reached on an infield single to 2b.
- Buell advanced to 2b during Bell's at-bat on a throwing error by
Speerstra who was trying to pick him off at 1b -- the poorly-thrown
ball bounced into the KSU dugout. Buell then stole 3b and eventually
scored on a wild pitch.
- Bell walked.
- Bobier flew out on a line drive to cf.
- Bell advanced to 2b during Marn's at-bat on a throwing error by
Spiker who was trying to pick him off at 1b.
- Marn grounded out to ss.
- Texas:
- Carter walked.
- Hart grounded out (1-3) on a hit-and-run. If Carter hadn't
already been on the move, it would probably have been a double
play. Carter safe at 2b.
- Gutierrez reached on an infield single to ss.
- Loeffler singled to lf (rbi). Carter scored and Gutierrez moved
to 2b.
- Gutierrez and Loeffler advanced a base on a wild pitch during
Walsh's at-bat.
- Walsh reached on a suicide squeeze play (rbi). Gutierrez scored
and Loeffler moved to 3b.
- Harkrider reached on an infield single (rbi) -- a high bouncer that
took so long to come down the third baseman had no play. Loeffler
scored and Walsh moved to 3b.
- KSU sent Peck in to pitch.
- Cridland hit a sacrifice fly to cf (rbi). Walsh scored.
- Johnson went down swinging (2-2 count).
- 3rd inning
- KSU:
- Schesser flew out to cf.
- Poepard popped up to ss (in shallow left-cf).
- Fereday grounded out to 3b.
- Texas:
- Spiker flew out to cf on a line drive.
- Carter hit a homerun over the "Green Monster" in cf!
- Hart grounded out to ss.
- Gutierrez grounded out to 3b -- a very nice play by KSU's Marn.
- 4th inning
- KSU:
- Bichelmeyer was called out on strikes (1-2 count).
- Ayres doubled to the lf corner.
- Buell walked.
- Bell flew out to rf.
- Bobier reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice.
- Texas:
- Loeffler reached 2b on an error by 2b. He hit a pop-up to shallow
rf. The second baseman got back to the ball but dropped it -- a
very head's up play by Loeffler who ran hard hoping the fielder
couldn't catch up to the ball.
- Walsh grounded out to 3b.
- Harkrider reached on a bunt he placed between the pitcher and 1b.
Both players tried to field ball and nobody was in position to
cover 1b for the put-out. Loeffler moved to 3b.
- Cridland grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
- 5th inning
- KSU:
- Marn grounded out to 3b.
- Schesser was hit by a pitch (0-2 count...sigh).
- Poepard singled to lf. Schesser moved to 2b.
- Fereday singled to rf. Schesser moved to 3b. Poepard moved to 2b.
- Bichelmeyer doubled to lf (2 rbi). Fereday moved to 3b.
- Texas sent Starcich in to pitch.
- Ayres reached on a fielder's choice hit to 3b. On the play,
Johnson fielded and dove at the 3b bag in an attempt to tag
Fereday out. It looked like he got the glove between Fereday and
the bag before Fereday managed to get back to 3b. But, the 3b
ump called him safe. Coach Garrido stormed 3b and had a shouting
match with the ump to no avail. In a radio interview prior to UT's
next game (against Southwest Texas), Garrido told the interviewer
that what really upset him during his shouting match with the 3b
ump was the ump's admission that he missed the play (he was
apparently expecting Johnson to throw to 1b and was surprised that
he tried to make the out at 3b) and UT would just have to live
with the call.
- Buell hit a sacrifice fly to rf (foul). Another controversial
play as Cridland's throw appeared to arrive at the plate in time
to catch Fereday. Again, he was called safe and Garrido stormed
out to the plate and got in the home plate ump's face. Again, to
no avail. Bichelmeyer moved to 3b.
- Bell reached on an error by ss. Harkrider's throw was wide of the
base but it looked like Carter tagged the bag before the runner
reached. Not so according to the the ump. No shouting match on
this play, however. Bichelmeyer scored (no rbi). Ayres moved to
2b.
- Bobier went down swinging (2-2 count).
- Texas:
- Johnson flew out to cf.
- Spiker grounded out (2-3) off the plate.
- KSU sent Yanz in to pitch.
- Carter walked.
- Hart went down on 3 called strikes.
- 6th inning
- KSU:
- Marn flew out to rf.
- Schesser singled to lf.
- Poepard hit a homerun over the lf fence (2 rbi).
- Fereday flew out to cf.
- Bichelmeyer singled on a line drive hit about a foot above
Gutierrez's outstretched glove and then moved to 2b on a passed
ball.
- Starcich threw one pitch (a ball) to Ayres and Texas sent Rumfield
in to pitch.
- Ayres flew out to rf on the first pitch from Rumfield.
- Texas:
- Gutierrez lined out to 1b.
- Loeffler flew out to rf.
- Walsh reached on an infield single to ss. I might've charged
Schesser with an error but the official scorer saw things
differently.
- Walsh reached 2b on a wild pitch.
- Harkrider popped up to ss.
- 7th inning
- KSU:
- Texas sent Zamarripa in to pitch.
- Buell was hit by a pitch (0-2 count) and was then caught stealing
(2-4).
- Bell walked on 4 pitches.
- Bobier walked. Bell moved to 2b.
- Marn hit the first pitch (after a visit to the mound by Hooten)
into a 6-4-3 double play.
- Texas:
- Cridland walked on 4 pitches.
- Johnson singled to lf. Cridland moved to 2b.
- Spiker singled to rf. He tried bunting the first two pitches
but they both went foul. He rounded as if to bunt again but
pulled the bat back and was safe on the slap bunt play. Cridland
moved to 3b. Johnson moved to 2b.
- Carter reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, Marn (at 3b)
tried to throw Cridland out at the plate but his throw pulled
Ayres off the plate. Cridland scored. Johnson moved to 3b.
Spiker moved to 2b.
- Edelstein (pinch hitting for Hart) grounded into a double play (4-3).
Johnson scored (no rbi). Spiker moved to 3b.
- Gutierrez popped up to 2b.
- 8th inning
- KSU:
- Schesser doubled on a bloop hit over Harkrider's head. The ball
looked as though it would be a fairly routine catch for Harkrider
but it just kept drifting past him.
- Poepard went down swinging (2-2 count).
- Fereday popped up to 1b (foul).
- Bichelmeyer was intentionally walked. (Personal note: Boo. Hiss.
I think the intentional walk play sucks. Blech.)
- Ayres singled to cf. Schesser scored. Bichelmeyer moved to 3b.
- Buell singled to rf. Bighelmeyer scored. Ayres moved to 2b.
- Texas sent Dunn in to pitch.
- Sommerhauser (pinch hitting for Bell) reached on an infiled single
toward ss.
- Bobier reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice.
- Texas:
- KSU kept Sommerhauser in at cf and sent Thompson in to pitch.
- Loeffler went down on called strikes (3-2 count).
- Walsh lined out to ss.
- Harkrider walked on 4 pitches.
- KSU sent Johnson in to pitch.
- Cridland went down swinging (0-2 count).
- 9th inning
- KSU:
- Marn walked.
- Schesser tripled to the lf corner (rbi).
- Poepard went down swinging (0-2 count).
- Fereday grounded out to ss (rbi). Schesser scored.

- KSU sent Spitler in for Marn at 3b.
- Johnson walked and moved to 2b on a wild pitch.
- Spiker grounded out to ss. Johnson moved to 3b.
- Carter grounded out to 3b (rbi). Johnson scored.
- Edelstein walked.
- Simpson (pinch hitting for Gutierrez) went down swinging (3-2
count).
