Game 29: Texas at Texas Tech

I listened to today's game at Texas Tech on the radio and this report is based on that broadcast. Ricky Jacquez got the start and earned the win moving his record to 2-1. Erich Weiss was the offensive hero of the day, going 4-for-6 with a home run, 2 runs batted in, and 3 runs scored. The team combined for 19 hits, though, so nobody was left out. We got to see multiple-hits by Maitland, Weiss, Walsh, Marlow, Silver, Stell, and Etier; multiple-runs-batted-in by Payton, Weiss, Marlow, Silver, Felts, and Stell; and multiple-runs-scored by Weiss, Walsh, Marlow, Silver, and Stell. Pretty cool.

Here's the line (from GameTracker):

[Final line score]

The lineups:

  2. Tim Maitland (cf)
  3. Erich Weiss (3b)

  7. Jacob Felts (c)
  8. Taylor Stell (lf)
  9. Jordan Etier (ss)
  1. Jamodrick McGruder (dh)
  2. Tim Proudfoot (ss)
  3. Barrett Barnes (cf)

  5. Bo Altobelli (3b)
  6. Kevin Whitehead (c)
  7. Bryant Burleson (2b)
  8. Jordan Lopez (rf)
  9. Brennan Moore (lf)

Play by play:

This was an especially nice win after the way things went during and after last night's game. The Horns played well except for the errors. It sounded like two of the errors were more-or-less tough luck calls so I'm not terribly torn up about them. The Horns will now play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday and then Oklahoma State comes to town next weekend for our first conference series at home in the 2012 season. Hook 'em!

Game 28: Texas at Texas Tech

Briefly: Texas lost to Texas Tech 6-7 (in 14 innings) in Lubbock.

I missed most of the game but listened to the final 4 or 5 innings. It was heart-breaking. Texas managed to tie the score at 4-4 in the 7th and it remained 4-4 until the 14th when the Horns scored 2 on a pinch-hit 2-run single by Kevin Lusson. The Horns had sent Corey Knebel to the mound in the 8th and he was still in the game as the 14th started. The 14th went like so:

And, then, the Tech team and many fans dog-piled at home plate. Huh? I've never seen fans dog-pile after any game. Or any team dog-pile after a regular-season game. Bizarre. In addition, some Tech fans took their aggression out verbally against the Texas radio broadcasters as well as the team and many of the Texas fans. They also trashed one of the team vehicles in the parking lot. Ugliness. Sigh...

It was a tough loss and the ugliness of the crowd made it that much worse.
