Game 17: Texas at Oklahoma
As I frequently do for away games, I listened to the game on the radio and kept score while I listened. This report is based on that broadcast.
Texas won 9-5, clinching a win of the series, and extended their regular-season series win streak against the Sooners to 14. Isn't that amazing? Yowza.
Anyway...on to the report...

Play by play:
- 1st inning, Texas
- Jonathan Gray (rhp) on the mound for OU.
- Maitland struck out swinging after fouling off several pitches.
- Payton flew out to rf.
- Weiss reached on a bloop double over the ss into shallow lf. Oops. Never mind. They ruled it a single with an error on the left fielder who had trouble rounding up the ball (I guess; radio guys did not notice the error but it was reported without details on GameTracker).
- 1st inning, Oklahoma
- Ricky Jacquez (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Ross drew a full-count 6-pitch walk.
- Mayfield was hit by the second pitch he saw. Ouch. And, sigh...
- After the first two pitches to White (ruled balls as White was squared to bunt), Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound.
- White reached on a fielding error by 3b. Weiss had trouble fielding a chopper hit to 3b.
- Mistich reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice. Texas tried to turn the double play but the throw from 2b to 1b was too late. Ross scored (earned). Mayfield moved up to 3b. White out at 2b.
- Bushyhead struck out swinging after fouling off a few pitches and working the count full. Mistich took off for 2b with the pitch. Felts threw to ss who threw it back as Mayfield broke for home. Perfect throw and tag got Mayfield out (caught stealing) at home for the double play. Nice!
- Texas down 0-1.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Marlow singled down the lf line.
- Lusson advanced Marlow to 2b on a 1-4 sac bunt.
- Silver grounded out to ss (right at the 2b bag), moving Marlow to 3b.
- Felts grounded out to 3b.
- Texas down 0-1.
- 2nd inning, Oklahoma
- Carey reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Reine singled through the right side, moving Carey to 2b. Payton got the ball in quickly, keeping Carey from moving up to 3b.
- With Toal at the plate, the runners advanced on a wild pitch.
- Toal ended up reached on a 6-pitch full-count walk to load the bases.
- After the first pitch to Simpson (a ball), Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound. It appeared that the bullpen had indicated that relief was ready but Jacquez stayed on the mound.
- Simpson reached on a 3-2 fielder's choice! Bases still loaded but no run scored. Nice. Sounds like a huge defensive improvement over the last couple of weeks. I've seen Texas miss throws home several times this season.
- Ross lined out to the pitcher who then threw to 3b to turn a double play! Wow.
- Texas down 0-1.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Etier reached on a 6-pitch full-count walk.
- Maitland tried to bunt Etier to 2b but hit the ball too hard. He reached on a 1-6 fielder's choice. Etier out at 2b.
- With Payton at the plate, Maitland stole 2b. The ball skipped into cf so Maitland tried to make it to 3b but was thrown out 8-5. Close play. Coach Harmon argued the ruling to no avail.
- Payton blooped a single over 2b into rf.
- Weiss tripled off the wall in cf, scoring Payton. The center fielder was shaken up as he ran into the wall trying to field the ball. He stayed in the game, though.
- With Walsh at the plate, Weiss scored on a wild pitch that got away from the catcher all the way to the backstop (on the right side, I think).
- Walsh grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 2-1.
- 3rd inning, Oklahoma
- Mayfield singled over 2b into cf.
- White grounded out to p, moving Mayfield to 2b. The runner was off with the pitch so no time to make the play at 2b.
- Mistich reached on a 6-pitch full-count walk.
- Bushyhead grounded out to ss. The ball was too late for Etier to make the play at 2b so went for the sure out. Mayfield moved to 3b and Mistich to 2b.
- Carey grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas up 2-1.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Marlow popped out to ss down the lf line. Nice play by the shortstop.
- Lusson lined out to cf. Dang.
- Silver drew a 5-pitch walk.
- The OU pitching coach made a visit to the mound.
- Felts singled into lf. The left fielder dove and tried to say he caught the ball but the ump ruled that it was trapped. Silver moved up to 2b on the play.
- Etier tripled to the right-center gap, scoring Silver and Felts!
- Maitland struck out swinging.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 4th inning, Oklahoma
- Reine singled into rf.
- Toal was hit by a pitch, moving Reine to 2b.
- Texas sent Austin Dicharry (rhp) to the mound, replacing Jacquez.
- Simpson lined out to rf.
- Ross singled through the right side. Reine scored and Toal moved up to 3b. Payton tried to make a play at home but the runner was ruled safe.

- Game tied 4-4.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Payton singled up the middle (1st pitch).
- Weiss singled into right-center, moving Payton to 3b.
- Walsh reached on a fielder's choice hit to 2b. Payton was caught in a run down and eventually tagged out 4-2-5. Weiss moved up to 3b and Walsh to 2b during the rundown.
- OU sent Steven Bruce (rhp) to the mound, replacing Gray.
- Marlow grounded out (slow hopper, according to Bill Little) to ss, scoring Weiss and moving Walsh to 3b.
- Lusson flew out to rf.
- Texas up 5-4.
- 5th inning, Oklahoma
- Texas sent Hoby Milner (lhp) to the mound, replacing Dicharry.
- Mistich grounded out to p.
- Bushyhead singled up the middle.
- Carey struck out swinging.
- Reine struck out looking (full count). Yes!
- Texas up 5-4.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Silver lined out to rf. The right fielder made a nice sliding catch to rob Silver of a hit.
- Felts reached on an e5. The third baseman fielded the high bouncer and then threw high to 1b.
- Felts stole 2b with Etier at the plate.
- Etier singled into rf, scoring Felts. The crowd expressed disbelief that Felts touched the plate but he was ruled safe by the home plate umpire.
- Maitland hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice.
- Payton drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Weiss flew out to the warning track in lf.
- The guys on the radio kept saying Weiss just needed a homerun to hit for the cycle but since his first at-bat was ruled a single and an error so he still needed the double as well. Sigh...
- Texas up 6-4.
- 6th inning, Oklahoma
- Toal reached on a single down the lf line.
- Simpson lined out to 3b. Weiss threw to 1b, catching Toal off the bag before he could get back to 1b. Double play! Toal somehow hurt himself (his knee?) diving back for the bag and was helped off the field.
- Ross reached on an infield single deep in the hole at ss.
- Mayfield grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 6-4.
- 7th inning, Texas
- OU sent Dylan Neal in at c, replacing Toal who was hurt on that play in the bottom of the 6th.
- Walsh tripled to left-center. Ross fell as he went for the ball and appeared, again, to hurt himself. A trainer and the coach went out to check on him and he ended up leaving the game. OU sent Ty Taylor into cf.
- Marlow battled off several pitches and ended up flying out down the rf line. The right fielder dove for the ball to make the catch and Walsh scored pretty easily on the sac fly.
- Lusson grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Silver doubled into left-center.
- The OU pitcher balked before the first pitch to Felts, moving Silver to 3b.
- Felts singled into rf, scoring Silver!
- OU sent Drew Harrison (rhp) to the mound, replacing Bruce.
- Etier drew a 4-pitch walk, moving Felts to 2b.

- White grounded out to 3b.
- Mistich singled into lf.
- Bushyhead doubled over 1b down the rf line, moving Mistich to 3b.
- Carey scored Mistich on a sac fly down the lf line.
- Bushyhead moved up to 3b on a wild pitch on a ball that not get very far from Felts with Reine at the plate. Close play at 3b.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound after the first two pitches to Reine. Full infield joined in on the conversation.
- Reine popped out to ss in shallow cf.
- Texas up 8-5.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Payton reached on a single to cf and moved up to 2b as the ball got away from the center fielder who tried to make a sliding catch.
- Weiss singled through the right side, scoring Payton.
- OU sent Kindle Ladd (rhp) to the mound, replacing Harrison.
- Walsh lined a single into rf, moving Weiss to 2b. Which, I think, turns the run into an earned run.
- Marlow reached on a 6-5 fielder's choice (yes, really...somehow, they got the lead runner at 3b).
- After the first pitch to Lusson (a ball), OU sent Damien Magnifico (rhp) to the mound, replacing Ladd. What an amazing name! Damien Magnifico. Wow.
- Lusson popped out to ss.
- Silver grounded into a 5-unassisted fielder's choice as the third baseman fielded and stepped on 3b to get the lead runner.
- Texas up 9-5.

- OU Lockwood in the game at c, kept Oberste in at 1b, and moved White out to cf.
- Felts was hit by a pitch and then moved up to 2b on a bad pick-off throw by the pitcher (e1) with Etier at the plate.
- Etier struck out looking after fouling off a couple of pitches.
- Maitland grounded out to 1b (unassisted), moving Felts to 3b.
- Payton struck out looking after working the count full.
- Texas up 9-5.
- 9th inning, Oklahoma
- White popped out to shallow cf behind the second baseman. Nice play.
- Mistich worked the count full and drew a walk. Ack!
- Bushyhead flew out to deep lf.
- Carey grounded out to 3b!
- Texas wins 9-5.
Jacquez struggled throughout and did not figure in the decision. Milner was credited with the win, moving his record to 3-3. Knebel threw the final two innings and did a good job but it was not a save situation so no save for him. The offense seemed to be on fire. Weiss went 4-for-5 with a triple, 2 runs scored, and 2 batted in. Etier, in the #9 spot, went 2-for-3 with a 2-run triple and a total of 3 runs batted in. Payton, Walsh, and Felts also had multiple hits. The team combined for 15 hits on the day. So nice.
