Game 57: Texas at Missouri (Big 12 Tournament)
I've got a high school graduation I might go to today. As I sit here waiting for the game to start I'm torn! To go...or not to go? I've decided to let the Horns decide. If they've got control of the game at 11 o'clock, I'm going. If not, I'm staying put. My plan is to have the Big 12's video stream open so I can see things. But, I have a tough time listening to those guys so I'll listen to Craig Way and Bill Little on the radio. That seems to work best! And, so...
The line-ups:
| Texas | Missouri | |
|---|---|---|
| Brandon Loy (ss) Mark Payton (rf) Tant Shepherd (1b) Erich Weiss (lf) Paul Montalbano (lf) Jonathan Walsh (dh) Cohl Walla (cf) Jordan Etier (2b) Jacob Felts (c) |
Conner Mach (lf) Brannon Champagne (cf) Eric Garcia (1b) Jonah Schmidt (dh) Blake Brown (rf) Ben Turner (c) Jesse Santo (ss) C.J. Jarvis (3b) Andrew Thigpen (2b) |
Play by play:
- 1st inning, Texas
- Matt Stites (rhp) on the mound for Missouri.
- Loy flew out to lf.
- Payton singled into rf.
- Shepherd popped out to 1b. Sigh. Another pop-up. Wow.
- With Weiss at the plate, Payton was caught stealing (2-6).
- 1st inning, Missouri
- Sam Stafford (lhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Mach struck out swinging.
- Champagne lined a single past Stafford's head into cf.
- Garcia lined a single into lf, moving Champagne to 2b.
- Schmidt fought off a few pitches but went down swinging.
- Brown drew a 5-pitch walk to load the bases.
- After a 1st-pitch ball to Turner, Coach Johnson made a quick trip to the mound.
- Turner flew out to cf. Whew.
- 28 pitches (18 for strikes).
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Weiss reached on a 4-pitch walk. All 4 pitches were way outside.
- Montalbano moved Weiss to 2b on a really nice 5-3 sac bunt.
- Walsh popped up to shallow rf.
- Walla struck out looking (2-2 count) after fouling off a couple of pitches.
- 2nd inning, Missouri
- Santo fell behind 0-2, worked the count full, fouled off a couple of pitches, and struck out swinging! (Couldn't he have just done that on the 0-2 count???)
- Jarvis struck out looking...on 3 pitches!
- Thigpen grounded out to ss.
- 18 pitches (13 for strikes).
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Etier flew out to lf.
- Felts singled over 2b into right-center.
- Loy (right after Bill Little made a comment about Missouri abandoning the lf line) doubled down the lf line into the corner! Felts scored on the play and Loy moved up to 3b on the throw home.
- Payton struck out swinging. Texas almost scored on a suicide squeeze bunt on the next-to-last pitch. Alas...it didn't happen.
- Shepherd struck out swinging.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 3rd inning, Missouri
- Mach flew out to lf in the lf/cf gap.
- (Happy aside, the radio broadcast and video stream are almost exactly in sync for me today. Yay.)
- Champagne struck out looking (full count).
- Garcia flew out to lf (1st pitch).
- 11 pitches (7 for strikes).
- Texas up 1-0.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Weiss singled through the left side past the diving third baseman.
- Montalbano moved Weiss to 2b on a 3-unassisted sac bunt.
- Walsh lined a single past the diving second baseman into cf, scoring Weiss!
- Walla, sadly, struck out swinging.
- Etier flew out to cf.
- Texas up 2-0.
- 4th inning, Missouri
- Schmidt doubled down the lf line.
- Brown struck out swinging...on 10 pitches. Pitch sequence: swinging strike, foul, ball, foul, ball, foul, foul, foul, foul, swinging strike. Whew.
- Turner lined a single into lf, moving Schmidt to 3b.
- Coach Johnson made a visit to the mound. The entire infield went to the mound for the visit.
- Santo drew a full-count walk to load the bases.
- After a 1st-pitch ball to Jarvis, Texas sent Kendal Carrillo (rhp) to the mound, replacing Stafford. Stafford's numbers: 3.1 innings, 16 batters faced, 1 run (earned), 3 hits (including a double), 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, 81 pitches (53 for strikes).
- Jarvis hit a sac fly to cf. Schmidt scored. The other runners did not advance.
- Thigpen struck out swinging!
- 11 pitches (8 for strikes) for Carrillo.
- Texas up 2-1.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Funny quote from Little (paraphrased): Texas wanted Stafford to go as far as he could and he didn't. [Umm...I'm guessing he pretty much did go as far as he could...as far as Texas felt he could, at any rate. Heh.]
- Felts grounded out to ss.
- Loy lined a single into lf.
- Payton lined out to rf. The right fielder slipped and almost fell but managed to make the catch. Loy had to scamper back to 1b quickly and was almost thrown out at 1b. Yikes.
- Shepherd drew a 5-pitch walk, moving Loy to 2b.
- Missouri made a very quick visit to the mound.
- With Weiss at the plate, Texas completed a double steal!
- Weiss reached on an error by the ss who booted a sharply-hit ground ball. Loy scored on the play and Shepherd moved up to 3b.
- Montalbano struck out looking. Shucks. The ball did look low and outside to me. Admittedly, the ump has been calling that pitch a strike all day, though.
- Texas up 3-1.
- 5th inning, Missouri
- Mach struck out swinging. On 3 pitches. Nice.
- Champagne also struck out swinging. That's 3 in-a-row!
- Garcia lined out to cf.
- 10 pitches (9 for strikes).
- Texas up 3-1.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Walsh drew a full-count 9-pitch walk!
- Walla reached on a fielder's choice. He hit a little bloop ball that fell in front of the 2b bag. The ss fielded and Walsh, who held up as he thought the ball would be caught was either tagged out by the ss or called out for running outside the line by the ump. It was a little unclear. Regardless, 6-unassisted on the out.
- Etier grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice.
- Felts was hit by a pitch, moving Etier to 2b.
- Loy drew a full-count walk to load the bases.
- Missouri had a full-infield visit at the mound.
- Payton flew out to cf. Frustrating to load the bases without a hit and come away empty. Blech.
- Texas up 3-1.
- 6th inning, Missouri
- Schmidt struck out swinging!
- Brown struck out looking! Carrillo's having a great day!
- Turner struck out looking. Oh, what a wonderful inning!
- 14 pitches (9 for strikes).
- Texas up 3-1.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Shepherd flew out to cf at the warning track.
- Weiss flew out to lf just short of the warning track.
- Montalbano doubled into the lf corner.
- Insert another full-infield visit to the mound for Missouri.
- Walsh doubled over the right fielder (and off his glove) to score Montalbano!
- Missouri sent Jeff Emens (rhp) to the mound, replacing Stites.
- Walla struck out looking. Sad face.
- Texas up 4-1.
- 7th inning, Missouri
- Santo grounded out to ss. The rushed throw from Loy was a bit off-line but Shepherd made a nice stretch to catch it for the out.
- Jarvis flew out to cf.
- Thigpen flew out to cf.
- 8 pitches (6 for strikes).
- Texas up 4-1.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Etier was hit by a pitch.
- Felts moved Etier to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt down the 1b line.
- Loy doubled into the rf corner (!) to score Etier.
- Payton grounded out (soft grounder) to ss. Loy was unable to advance.
- Shepherd drew a 4-pitch walk.
- With Weiss at the plate, Loy moved up to 3b on a wild pitch (the ball just got a few feet away from the catcher). Shepherd did not advance on the play.
- Weiss singled into rf, scoring Loy and moving Shepherd to 2b.
- Missouri sent Jeff Scardino (lhp) to the mound, replacing Emens.
- With Montalbano at the plate, Texas tried a double steal. Missouri actually threw out Weiss on the back-end of the play. Huh.
- Texas up 6-1.
- 8th inning, Missouri
- Mach reached on an infield single to ss. Loy made a nice stop deep in the hole but was unable to get the throw to 1b in time for the out.
- Texas sent Andrew McKirahan (lhp) to the mound, replacing Carrillo. Carrillo's final numbers: 3.2 innings, 12 batters, no runs, 1 hit, 6 strikeouts, no walks, 38 pitches (28 for strikes).
- Champagne grounded into a nice 6-4-3 double play.
- [And, suddenly, the video is 5 or 6 seconds behind the audio. Ah well...it was nice while it lasted.]
- Garcia was called out on strikes.
- 7 pitches (5 for strikes) for McKirahan.
- Texas up 6-1.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Missouri sent xx Ampleman in to catch, replacing Turner.
- Montalbano flew out to cf.
- Walsh flew out to lf.
- Walla reached on an infield single to ss.
- Etier popped out to ss in shallow cf.
- Texas up 6-1.
- 9th inning, Missouri
- Texas sent Corey Knebel (rhp) to the mound, replacing McKirahan. The Horns also moved Montalbano to rf and sent Tim Maitland in at lf (replacing Payton in the lineup).
- Schmidt grounded out to ss.
- Brown flew out to cf.
- Ampleman grounded out to 3b to end the game.
- Texas wins 6-1!
The line:
| Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 6 | 11 | 0 |
| Missouri | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | - | 1 | 5 | 1 |
Props to Carrillo and Loy from Bill Little and Coach Garrido in the post-game interview on KVET. Garrido is happy with the team's attitude. The starter this afternoon will be Hoby Milner. He also noted that Thomas, Urban, and Dicharry have not yet pitched.
And, I'm outta here...high school graduation, here I come! Sorry for any typos...no time to check before I leave. Horns play the Tigers again at 4...I think Texas will be the home team for that game.
