Game 31: Texas at Baylor
Like the Friday game, I watched Baylor's web stream of the game (via CBS-Sports). I have to say I really missed Craig Way. One of the Baylor radio guys was very shrill. Sigh...
It was a close game until the 7th when the bullpen fell apart and the Horns fell behind by 5. They rallied in a big way in the 9th but came up just short, losing 6-7. The line:

The starting line-ups:
| Texas | Baylor | |
|---|---|---|
| Brandon Loy (ss) Mark Payton (rf) Erich Weiss (lf) Lucas Kephart (dh) Tant Shepherd (1b) Jordan Etier (2b) Alex Silver (3b) Paul Montalbano (cf) Jacob Felts (c) |
Joey Hainsfurther (dh) Brooks Pinckard (cf) Max Muncy (1b) Josh Ludy (c) Dan Evatt (lf) Cal Towey (rf) Landis Ware (ss) Jake Miller (3b) Steve DalPorto (2b) |
Yes...Alex Silver made his first start as a Longhorn. Cool.
And, the play by play:
- 1st inning, Texas
- Josh Turley (lhp) on the mound for Baylor.
- Loy lined a double down the lf line.
- Payton drew a full-count walk.
- Weiss reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice. The relay throw on the double-play attempt pulled the first baseman off the bag or Baylor likely would've turned the dp.
- Kephart popped a bunt attempt to the pitcher who had an easy throw to 1b to catch Weiss off the bag to turn an easy double-play. Damn.
- 17 pitches (8 for strikes).
- 1st inning, Baylor
- Hoby Milner (lhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Hainsfurther flew out to shallow rf. Nice run and catch by Payton.
- Pinckard flew out to lf (in the gap).
- Muncy struck out looking (full count).
- 14 pitches (8 for strikes).
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Shepherd singled past the second baseman into cf.
- Etier moved Shepherd to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Silver, making his first start of the year, lined a single into cf, moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Montalbano hit a squeeze bunt between the mound and 1b, scoring Shepherd and moving Silver to 2b. 3-1 on the out.
- Felts flew out to rf.
- 8 pitches (6 for strikes).
- Texas up 1-0.
- 2nd inning, Baylor
- Ludy flew out to rf.
- Evatt drew a full-count walk.
- Towey struck out swinging. The ball got away from Felts and Evatt moved up to 2b. WP?
- Ware singled to shallow cf, scoring Evatt. Montalbano made a hard run in but was unable to catch up with the ball.
- After the first pitch to Miller (a ball), Skip Johnson made a quick trip to the mound.
- Miller flew out to rf.
- 20 pitches (11 for strikes).
- Game tied 1-1.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Loy grounded out to the pitcher.
- Payton lined a single over the second baseman into rf.
- Weiss doubled over the right fielder's head. Payton had to wait to see if the ball would be caught and was only able to advance to 3b. Payton must have stumbled at 3b or something and came up limping. After a short visit with the trainer, he stayed in the game.
- Kephart struck out swinging (full count). Ouch.
- Shepherd also struck out swinging (2-2 count). Double ouch.
- 24 pitches (14 for strikes).
- Game tied 1-1.
- 3rd inning, Baylor
- DalPorto flew out to cf.
- Hainsfurther popped out to 2b in shallow rf. He fell down making the catch instead of letting Payton, who seemed to have better position, make the catch. Maybe worrying about Payton not being able to get to it after hurting his leg earlier? Hmmm...
- Pinckard flew out to rf.
- 13 pitches (7 for strikes).
- Game tied 1-1.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Etier popped out to ss in shallow lf.
- Silver flew out to cf.

- 12 pitches (7 for strikes).
- Game tied 1-1.
- 4th inning, Baylor
- Muncy strikes out for the 2nd time (swinging this time).
- Ludy singled to left center. Montalbano did a nice job to cut the ball off in the gap and limit Ludy to a single.
- Evatt homered over the lf fence. Sigh...
- Towey falls behind 0-2 and then draws a full-count walk.
- Ware grounded out to 3b, moving Towey to 2b. Close play at 1b...looked like the batter was probably safe.
- The first bitch to Miller bounced away from Felts, allowing Towey to advance to 3b on the wild pitch. Prompting another visit to the mound by Skip Johnson.
- Miller ended up drawing a 5-pitch walk.
- DalPorto grounded out to ss. Really nice play and throw by Loy at ss.
- 22 pitches (12 for strikes).
- Horns down 1-3.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Felts grounded out to 3b.
- Loy doubled past 3b and down the lf line.
- Payton advanced Loy to 3b on a 1-3 sac bunt hit down the 3b line. Umm. Never mind. Ruled that he was going for a bunt single, no sac.
- Weiss reached on an infield single to ss, scoring Loy!
- With Kephart at the plate, Weiss stole 2b. The Bears had him picked off (1-3-6) but the ss missed the throw from 1b and Weiss was safe. It could've easily been ruled an error.
- Kephart struck out looking. Whew.
- 20 pitches (12 for strikes).
- Texas down 2-3.
- 5th inning, Baylor
- Hainsfurther grounded out to ss.
- Pinckard tripled to the rf/cf gap.

- 8 pitches (5 for strikes).
- Texas down 2-3.
- 6th inning, Baylor
- Evatt grounded out to 2b.

- 8 pitches (7 for strikes).
- Texas down 2-3.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Montalbano grounded out to ss deep in the hole.
- Felts struck out swinging.
- Loy also struck out swinging.
- 9 pitches (7 for strikes).

- Miller struck out swinging.
- DalPorto drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Texas sent Andrew McKirahan (lhp) to the mound, replacing Carrillo.

- Pinckard was intentionally walked to load the bases. Sigh.
- Muncy doubled to the rf/cf gap, scoring DalPorto and Hainsfurther. Pinckard moved up to 3b.
- Texas sent Josh Urban (rhp) to the mound, replacing McKirahan. Not a good day for McKirahan, sadly.

- Evatt after getting ahead 3-0, went down looking.
- Texas sent Kirby Bellow (lhp) to the mound, replacing Urban.

- Turley's final numbers: 8 innings (plus 1 batter), 32 batters, xx runs (), 6 hits (including 3 doubles), 5 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, 114 pitches (68 for strikes).
- Texas loses 6-7.
Great come-back effort by the Horns in the 9th. Too bad it fell just a little bit too short. Rubber match in Austin. I was wondering, by the way, why they split the series they way they did. Usually on these split series, they play the Friday game in one city and the Saturday/Sunday games in the other. They apparently switched this year because the Texas Relays were going on and they were trying to avoid some of the congestion problems that come with so many extra people being in Austin.
