Austin Regional Tournament, Day 1
Just a quick post from my iPhone. I'll update as news warrants and then come back and update this post more thoroughly when I get home tonight.
In the first game of the day, Rice played host to Louisiana-Lafayette. ULL won 1-0 on a great complete game pitching performance by Zach Osborne. By my count he threw 136 pitches and gave up just 5 hits. More later.
UPDATE. It's now later (10:30 pm). The first game of the day really was quite good. There was a very large and very vocal bunch of U. Louisiana-Lafayette fans at the game. They had something to say after nearly every pitch. I can't remember the last time I was around such a vocal group of baseball fans. They wore lots of red, made a lot of noise, and were impossible to ignore. And, their team put on a great show. Their center fielder (Kyle Olasin) made a fantastic running catch at the wall in the bottom of the third to rob Michael Ratterree of extra bases. The story of the day, though, was Osborne's pitching performance. The Ragin' Cajuns shut out the Owls and, in fact, limited them to just 2 hits through the first 6.2 innings of the game.
In the 2nd game of the day, the Longhorns shut out Rider 11-0...behind yet another stellar complete-game pitching performance. Brandon Workman earned his 12th victory of the year while throwing, by my count, 130 pitches. The Horns were back to their old selves today. Big 12 Tournament? What Big 12 Tournament? Today's game was a thing of beauty for Texas baseball fans. More info in today's full game report...to be posted shortly.
So, tomorrow. Rice and Rider meet at 1 o'clock in the elimination game. Texas and ULL meet at 6:30 in the winner's bracket. Hook 'em!
