Game 57: Texas A&M at Texas (Big 12 Tournament)
Texas played home team to the Aggies today. I watched the online stream. Brandon Loy still out of the lineup...alas. According to the Texas_Baseball twitter feed, Cohl Walla is wearing jersey #4 and Kevin Keyes is wearing #30. No word on why.
The line...
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Texas A&M | 2 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 9 | 14 | 1 |
Texas | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 10 | 1 |
And, here's how things played out...
- 1st inning, TAMU
- Cole Green (rhp) on the mound for the Horns.
- Joaquin Hinojosa (lf) grounded out to ss. One pitch, one out. 'Like it.
- Tyler Naquin (rf) lined a double into left-center. Don't like that nearly as much.
- Brodie Greene (ss) doubled down the lf line, scoring Naquin. Sigh...
- Joe Patterson (1b) struck out looking. Yes!
- Matt Juengel (dh) singled up the middle, scoring Greene.
- Geesh. They're hitting the ball hard!
- Adam Smith (2b) struck out swinging.
- Texas down 0-2.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Clayton Ehlert (rhp) on the mound for the Aggies.
- Cohl Walla (lf) lined a double into right-center!
- Tant Shepherd (1b) reached on a 6-5 fielder's choice. Walla was thrown out easily at 3b. Sigh...
- Cameron Rupp (c) struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) singled up the middle (1st pitch), scoring Shepherd and moving Moldenhauer to 2b.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Texas down 1-2.
- 2nd inning, TAMU
- Gregg Alcazar (c) was hit by a full-count pitch. Looked like he was swinging at the pitch to me but no argument from Texas.
- Alcazar moved up to 2b on a wild pitch (first pitch to next batter). Which prompted a visit to the mound by Skip Johnson.
- Caleb Shofner (3b) drew a 5-pitch walk. Ugh.
- Andrew Collazo (cf) popped out to the pitcher...bad bunt attempt.
- Hinojosa struck out swinging.
- Naquin hit a homerun over the fence in right-center. Ouch.
- Greene reached on an infield single to 3b. Lusson made a nice diving stop on a sharply-hit ball but couldn't get the throw to 1b in time to make the out.
- Patterson grounded out to ss.
- Texas down 1-5.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Sigh...the Sirius guy (doing the audio for the Big 12 Internet stream) just said that Weymouth is in 2b for the usual Texas second baseman, Brandon Loy. Yikes.
- Jordan Weymouth (2b) grounded out to ss. Nice play by Greene.
- Connor Rowe (cf) singled into rf.
- Jordan Etier (ss) moved Rowe to 2b on a 5-3 sac bunt. I think he was actually bunting for a single but...
- Walla struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Texas down 1-5.
- 3rd inning, TAMU
- Juengel homered way over the lf fence (1st pitch). Wow.
- Smith struck out swinging. Fourth strikeout for Green. And, then all those hits. Sigh...
- Alcazar grounded out to 1b (3-1, p covered bag).
- Shofner lined out to rf at the warning track. Nice catch by Keyes.
- Quick inning...7 pitches. Weird.
- Texas down 1-6.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Shepherd struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Rupp reached on a fielding error by the shortstop who stopped the ball but then dropped it.
- Moldenhauer drew his second 5-pitch walk in as many plate appearances.
- Keyes flew out to rf at the warning track. Rupp was nearly to 3b so could not tag and advance. Sigh...
- Lusson lined out to rf.
- Texas down 1-6.
- 4th inning, TAMU
- Collazo lined out to cf. Great diving forward catch by Rowe in cf.
- Brandon Word (pinch-hitting for Hinojosa) doubled to left-center. He tried to stretch it into a triple but was thrown out (8-6-5)!
- Naquin doubled to left-center.
- Greene singled to cf, scoring Naquin.
- Wow. Green's really getting hammered today. Scary.
- With Patterson at the plate, Greene was caught stealing 2-6 (3rd pitch to Patterson).
- Texas down 1-7.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Wood stayed in the game for the Aggies in lf.
- Weymouth struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Rowe singled into lf.
- Etier singled past the diving ss into cf, moving Rowe to 3b.
- Walla popped out softly to ss.

- That's 7 stranded, 4 in scoring position.
- Texas down 1-7.
- 5th inning, TAMU
- Texas sent Brandon Workman (rhp) to the mound, replacing Green.
- Patterson struck out swinging.
- Juengel hit another monster homerun over the lf wall. Wow.
- Smith doubled down the lf line.
- Alcazar was hit by a pitch. Again, it looked like he was swinging at the pitch to me. Strange. The ump talked to Workman and Rupp after the pitch.
- Shofner flew out to cf.
- Smith tagged and moved up to 3b. Texas appealed that he left early and got the call. Double play. Heh.
- Texas down 1-8.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Rupp singled into rf.
- Moldenhauer homered to cf!
- Keyes grounded out to 3b.
- Lusson struck out looking (full count).
- Sirius guy again repeats story about Loy being the usual starting second baseman for the Horns. Sigh...
- Weymouth struck out looking (1-2 count) after fouling off a couple of pitches.
- Texas down 3-8.
- 6th inning, TAMU
- Texas sent Kyle Lusson in at 2b, replacing Weymouth.
- Collazo grounded out to ss.
- Wood also grounded out to ss. Etier knocked the ball down, stayed with it, and got the throw to 1b in time. Nice.
- Naquin struck out swinging. Rupp couldn't hang onto the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out. Nice to see Naquin sit down!
- Also, 1-2-3. Turning things around.
- Texas down 3-8.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Rowe reached on his 3rd single of the day, this one to rf.
- Etier was walked on 4 pitches, moving Rowe to 2b. Nice.
- Insert mound visit.
- Walla reached on a perfect bunt down the 3b line to load the bases!
- Shepherd hit into a 5-2-3 double play. Damn!
- Runners at 2b and 3b with 2 out.
- Rupp grounded out on a high chopper to 2b.
- Wow. Agony.
- Texas down 3-8.
- 7th inning, TAMU
- Greene reached on a bloop single that fell between 2b and rf. Miscommunication between Kyle Lusson and Keyes.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound with a 1-1 count to Patterson.
- Patterson struck out swinging. Greene stole 2b on the K and then moved up to 3b on a throwing error by Rupp (c) who's throw to 2b was 3 or 4 feet above Etier covering 2b.
- Juengel fell behind, worked the count full, and drew a walk.
- Smith singled past a diving third baseman, scoring Greene and moving Juengel to 2b.
- Alcazar was hit by a pitch...this time on the helmet...to load the bases. The previous pitch was also high and inside. The pitch, by the way, just grazed the helmet, luckily...no injury to Alcazar.
- That makes the run earned, by the way.
- The ump warned both benches at this point. And, the Horns sent Chance Ruffin (rhp) to the mound, replacing Workman.
- Shofner struck out swinging (3 pitches).
- Collazo struck out looking.
- Texas down 3-9.
- 7th inning, Texas
- The Aggies moved Collazo from cf to 3b and sent Scott Arthur into cf (taking Shofner's spot in the lineup.
- Moldenhauer failed to reach for the first time today, grounding out to 2b.

- Naquin moved to 2b and then 3b on consecutive wild pitches with Greene at the plate.

- The Aggies sent Shane Minks (rhp) to the mound, replacing Ehlert.
- Rowe failed to reach base for the first time today...struck out looking (full count).
- Etier reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice. The second baseman dropped the ball but they ruled he dropped it on the transfer and called Lusson out at 2b.
- Etier stole 2b on the 2nd pitch to Walla.
- Walla struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Texas down 3-9.
- 9th inning, TAMU
- Texas sent Josh Urban (rhp) to the mound, replacing Ruffin. His 3rd appearance this year. Go, Josh!
- Juengel flew out to rf at the warning track. First time the Horns got Juengel out today.
- Smith struck out looking.
- Alcazar struck out swinging.
- Nice outing for Urban!
- Texas down 3-9.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Shepherd reached on a full-count 8-pitch walk.
- Rupp hit into a 4-3 double play. Smith fielded, stepped on 2b, and threw to 1b. I don't know how Smith managed to get the throw off in time after he raced to the 2b bag.
- Moldenhauer struck out looking on 3 pitches. Ouch.
- Texas loses 3-9.
I cannot believe how hard the Aggies hit Green and Workman today.
That was an ugly, ugly, ugly tournament for the Horns. I certainly hope they can get things back on track in the Regional. I'm sure Texas will still be a National Seed next week for the Regionals which means that they will host the Super Regional round if they win the Regional. And, that's what I'm looking forward to now. Big 12 Tournament over. Moving on.
Hook 'em!
