Game 56: Texas at Texas Tech (Big 12 Tournament)
Like yesterday, my plan was to listen to Craig Way and Keith Moreland on the radio and watch the Big 12 stream over the Internet. But, my plan did not work out. Amazingly, the video was running ahead of the radio broadcast and wasn't flaking out like yesterday so I ended up watching and listening to the not-so-great Internet guy. I'd much rather listen to Craig and Keith but it was not meant to be today.
Texas was the visiting team and Brandon Loy was still out. The Horns also had Connor Rowe starting back in cf today and played a bit with the batting order.
The line...
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Texas | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 7 | 2 |
Texas Tech | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | - | 4 | 8 | 1 |
And, here's how things played out...
- 1st inning, Texas
- Chad Bettis (rhp) on the mound for the Red Raiders.
- Cohl Walla (lf) struck out looking (0-2 count).
- Tant Shepherd (1b) grounded out to 2b.
- Cameron Rupp (c) singled into lf.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) grounded out to ss.
- 1st inning, Tech
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for the Horns.
- Jamodrick McGruder (2b) flew out to cf in right-center. First pitch.
- Joey Kenworthy (ss) grounded out to 2b.
- Barrett Barnes (1b) homered waaaaaay over the lf fence.
- Michael Reed (lf) reached on a bunt pushed by the mound on the 1b side. Weymouth tried to scoop the ball and toss it to Shepherd with his glove hand but not enough time.
- Scott LeJeune (dh) singled up the middle, moving Reed to 3b.
- Geesh.
- Bonham Hough (rf) popped out to 1b.
- Texas down 0-1.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Kevin Keyes (rf) singled up the middle.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) tried to bunt Keyes over but popped out to 1b instead.
- Jordan Weymouth (2b) reached on an infield chopper to 2b, moving Keyes to 2b. The second baseman tried to short-hop the ball but couldn't quite make the play.
- Connor Rowe (cf) flew out to rf. Keyes was almost at 3b when the catch was made so no tag and advance. Sigh...
- Jordan Etier (ss) struck out swinging.
- Texas down 0-1.
- 2nd inning, Tech
- Nick Popescu (3b) flew out to shallow cf. First pitch.
- Jeremy Mayo (c) struck out swinging.
- Taylor Ashby (cf) popped out to 1b.
- 1-2-3. Yes!
- Texas down 0-1.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Walla reached on a fielding error by 1b. The first baseman stopped the hard ground ball and then couldn't find the ball. Kind of a weird play.
- Shepherd tried to bunt Walla over but failed to get the bunt down. He was called out on strikes on the next pitch. The pitch looked way outside to me. And,, to Shepherd apparently.
- Rupp singled through the right side, moving Walla up to 3b.
- Moldenhauer reached on a 3-6 fielder's choice, scoring Walla. The Red Raiders tried to turn a 3-6-1 double play but the throw from 1b was wide and the ss didn't have a chance to make a good throw back to 1b.
- Keyes grounded out to 3b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 3rd inning, Tech
- McGruder drew a full-count 7-pitch walk.
- Kenworthy flew out to shallow rf.
- Barnes flew out to shallow cf.
- Reed doubled down the rf line, moving McGruder to 3b.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound at this point.
- LeJeune grounded out to 1b (p covered the bag). Close play. Whew.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Lusson grounded out to 2b. Nice dive and stop by the second baseman.
- Weymouth also grounded out to 2b. Not as exciting though.
- Rowe struck out swinging.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 4th inning, Tech
- Hough lined out to cf.
- Popescu singled up the middle.
- Popescu tried to steal on the first pitch to Mayo but was thrown out (2-6). Beautiful throw by Rupp.
- Mayo struck out swinging.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Etier struck out swinging. Wow. It's really hard to believe how much Etier's struggling after his great start at the plate.
- Walla struck out swinging as well.
- Shepherd grounded out to 2b.
- Game tied 1-1.
- 5th inning, Tech
- Ashby doubled down the lf line. 8 pitches. Wait. Lusson charged with an error on the play. Hmmm...the camera angle was bad but it didn't look like Lusson touched the ball. Maybe the scorer thought he should've been able to get behind the ball he tried to back-hand? Dunno.
- McGruder reached on a fielding error by ss, moving Ashby to 3b. 'Looked like Etier lifted his head a bit early.
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound. Horns not looking very sharp again today.
- Kenworthy scored Ashby and moved McGruder to 2b on a 4-3 sac bunt. Nice bunt past the mound on the 1b side.
- Barnes homered (again, sigh) over the lf fence.
- Reed lined out to 1b.
- LeJeune flew out to lf.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Rupp grounded out to 3b.
- Moldenhauer lined out to cf.
- Keyes struck out swinging.
- Geesh. 10 outs in a row.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 6th inning, Tech
- Hough lined out to 3b.
- Popescu flew out to lf.
- Mayo struck out swinging for the 3rd time today. Also the 3rd strikeout of the day for Jungmann.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Lusson lined out to lf. The left fielder did not have to take a step to make the catch. Sigh...
- Weymouth struck out swinging.
- Rowe doubled to right center. Stopping the string of outs at 12. Yikes.
- Etier struck out swinging (foul tip). Agony.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 7th inning, Tech
- Ashby singled through the left side.
- McGruder (after a quick offensive timeout) reached on a bunt down the 1b line, moving Ashby to 2b. Jungmann tried to field the ball but he just couldn't get to it. Wow.
- Texas sent Stayton Thomas (rhp) to the mound, replacing Jungmann. Another start by Jungmann, another game with no run support. 'Course Bettis is throwing a great game for the Raiders. But, still.
- Kenworthy bunted a couple of pitches foul down the 3b line, hit a swinging foul ball down the 3b line, watched a ball, then hit a successful 1-3 sac bunt down the 1b line, moving Ashby to 3b and McGruder to 2b.
- Barnes reached on an intentional walk.
- Reed struck out swinging. Yes!
- LeJeune grounded out to ss. 'Looked like it was a maybe a great throw by Etier but the video showed the runner from 3b not scoring instead of showing the out. Sigh...
- Texas down 1-4.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Walla struck out looking. Looked low and outside to me.
- Shepherd singled up the middle past the ss.
- Which prompted a visit to the mound for Tech.
- And now the 2b ump is standing in line with the cf camera so I can't actually see the pitches as they cross the plate. Excellent.
- Rupp singled through the left side, moving Shepherd to 2b. 7 pitch at-bat. Nice.
- Texas Tech sent Bobby Doran (rhp) to the mound, replacing Bettis. 'Sure hope the Horns keep on hitting!
- Moldenhauer draws a 5-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Texas sends Riley Boening in to run for Moldenhauer. Really???!!!...cool.
- Keyes reached on a 6-4 (high bouncer) to ss, scoring Shepherd and moving Rupp to 3b.
- 2b ump in the way again. Why?
- Lusson struck out looking.
- Texas down 2-4.
- 8th inning, Tech
- The Horns sent Chance Ruffin (rhp) to the mound, replacing Thomas.
- Hough flew out to cf toward the lf/cf gap.
- Popescu struck out swinging.
- Mayo reached on a full-count walk. Heh. After striking out all day.
- Ashby reached on a 10-pitch full-count walk, moving Mayo to 2b.
- McGruder struck out swinging.
- Texas down 2-4.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Weymouth struck out swinging (foul tip).
- Rowe lined out to rf.
- Tim Maitland (pinch-hitting for Etier) grounded out to 2b.
- Texas loses 2-4. Wow.
Well, that pretty much sucked. I can't believe it. They just looked flat. Gotta win on Saturday against the Aggies. Sigh.
This feels kind of like the situation in 2007 when we started the Regional (played at the Dell Diamond) without Preston Clark who'd hurt his knee off the field and then Nick Peoples went down with a broken collar bone. It's different with the shortstop out instead of the catcher but making that sort of change just makes a difference to the chemistry on the field and in the line-up. And, that's not a knock on the other guys who are stepping in. It's just not the same team out there and I wonder how much the loss of Loy upsets the general balance on the field.
And, not much else to say today. Sorry 'bout that.
Hook 'em!
