Game 55: Missouri at Texas (Big 12 Tournament)
I took the afternoon off to watch the game stream on the Internet but the stream was very shaky so I mostly listened on the radio (Craig Way and Keith Moreland with the call). The radio signal was at least 2 pitches ahead (sometimes 3 or 4) all the way. Kind of frustrating. I kept the internet video stream on but had to keep refreshing it so listened to the game but watched "replays" to give additional detail in the game report.
The line...
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Missouri | 0 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 7 | 10 | 1 |
Texas | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 10 | 2 |
And, here's how things played out...
- 1st inning, Mizzou
- Hoby Milner (lhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Opel Dane (rf) popped out to 2b.
- Michael Liberto (ss) lined out to 3b. Nice play by Lusson who was pulled in anticipating a possible bunt.
- Aaron Senne (1b) struck out looking. Nice.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Nick Tepesch (rhp) on the mound for Missouri.
- Cohl Walla (lf) doubled down the rf line. First pitch!
- Tant Shepherd (1b) struck out swinging.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) flew out to shallow rf.
- Russell Moldenhauer grounds out to 2b, stranding Walla at 2b. Shucks.
- 2nd inning, Mizzou
- Brett Nicholas (c) grounded out to ss (8-pitch at-bat).
- Conner Mach (dh) hit a soft liner into rf for a single.
- Russell LaFleur (cf) struck out swinging.
- Eric Garcia (2b) was hit (just barely) by a pitch (thigh), moving Mach to 2b.
- Jesse Santo (3b) flew out to lf.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Cameron Rupp (c) grounded out to ss.
- Kevin Lusson (3b) homered down the rf line!
- Jordan Weymouth (2b) lined out to 3b.
- Connor Rowe (cf) doubled to the warning track over the right fielder.
- Jordan Etier reached on an infield single to ss (in the hole), moving Rowe to 3b.
- Walla lined out to 2b. Really nice leaping catch by 2b behind the 2b bag.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 3rd inning, Mizzou
- Ryan Gebhart (lf) reached on a 5-pitch walk.
- Opel was unable to get a bunt down but then singled up the middle, moving Gebhart to 2b.
- Liberto did get the sac down (5-3) to move the runners up to 2b and 3b.
- Skip Johnson did make a trip out to the mound after Milner fell behind 2-0 as Liberto was squaring to bunt.
- Senne (sigh) doubled off the rf wall, scoring 2.
- Nicholas singled to left-center, scoring Senne.
- Mach popped out to 3b at the mound.

- Texas down 1-3.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Shepherd flew out to cf in left-center.
- Keyes grounded out to 2b.
- Moldenhauer singled through the right side. Too bad nobody was on base, eh?
- Rupp flew out to lf.
- Texas down 1-3.
- 4th inning, Mizzou
- Garcia drew a full-count walk.
- Santo reached on a 5-6 (!) fielder's choice. He tried to bunt the runner over but hit the ball rather hard right at Lusson at 3b. He quickly threw to Etier (ss, today) covering the bag. 5-6 is an unusual out.
- Gebhart singled through the left side (8 pitches and 50 or so tosses to 1b). Sigh...
- Opel struck out swinging! 3 pitches.
- Liberto worked the count full and then singled through the left side, scoring Santo and moving Gebhart to 2b.
- Senne (sigh) drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Nicholas struck out looking! Whew.
- By my count, Milner's thrown 99 pitches to this point.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Lusson fell behind 0-2 but then drew a full-count walk. Nice.
- Weymouth, sadly, hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Rowe then lined out to 3b.
- 6 pitches to the 1st batter...1 each to the next two.
- Texas down 1-4.
- 5th inning, Mizzou
- The Horns sent Stayton Thomas (rhp) to the mound, replacing Milner.
- Mach reached on a throwing error by 3b. Lusson's throw went over 1b and Mach moved up to 2b. Not sure why since the ball bounced quickly back into the field of play and Mach did not make a turn at 1b. 'Guess it went out of play before bouncing back in.
- LaFleur advanced Mach to to 3b on a 5-4 sac bunt.
- Garcia singled through the right side with the infield pulled in, scoring Mach.
- Santo flew out to rf.
- Gebhart drew a 4-pitch walk, moving Garcia to 2b. Sigh...walking the #9 batter.
- Opel lined out to 2b. Whew.
- Texas down 1-5.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Etier struck out looking.
- Walla reached on a fielding error by 3b. Got glove on ball but couldn't gather it up.
- Shepherd doubled to left-center, scoring Walla.
- Keyes grounded out to ss behind 2b, moving Shepherd to 3b.
- Moldenhauer grounded out to 2b.
- Texas down 2-5.
- 6th inning, Mizzou
- Liberto struck out swinging (foul tip, 3 pitches).
- Senne (nobody on this time, yippee) drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Nicholas hit into a 4-6-3 double play! Yes!
- Skip Johnson made a visit to the mound, by the way, when Thomas fell behind 2-0 to Nicholas...the pitch before the dp ball!
- Texas behind 2-5.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Rupp singled into lf.
- Lusson singled up the middle.
- Weymouth (after a quick talk with Coach Garrido) tried to bunt the runners over couldn't get the bunt down and then hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Damn. Rupp moved up to 3b on the play.

- Mach grounded out to ss behind the 2b bag.
- LaFleur doubled into right center.
- Garcia drew a full-count walk.

- Gebhart grounded out to ss. First pitch. Nice.
- Texas down 2-5.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Etier grounded out to 3b. Also first pitch. Not as nice.
- Walla flew out to lf.
- Shepherd lined out to lf.
- 6-pitch inning. Sigh.
- Texas down 2-5.
- 8th inning, Mizzou
- Opel was hit by a pitch.
- Liberto moved Opel to 2b on a 5-3 sac bunt.
- Senne was intentionally walked.
- Nicholas reached on a 3-6 fielder's choice. Etier's relay throw back to McKirahan covering 1b was offline and went into the dugout. The run scored from 2b (on the error) and Nicholas ended up at 2b.
- Texas sent Kendal Carrillo (rhp) to the mound, replacing McKirahan.
- Mach doubled to left center, scoring Nicholas.
- LaFleur grounded out to 3b. Lusson almost tagged Mach out after fielding the ball before throwing to 1b. He just missed Mach who was cutting across in front of him as he fielded the ball.
- Texas down 2-7.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Keyes drew a 5-pitch walk. Thank you!
- Moldenhauer reached on a 6-unassisted fielder's choice. The shortstop dropped the ball and picked it up before stepping on 2b for the force.
- Rupp fell behind 0-2, worked the count full, fouled off a few pitches, and finally hit into a 6-4-3 double play. 11 pitches. Oh, the agony.
- Texas down 2-7.
- 9th inning, Mizzou
- Garcia (hbp, bb, 1b, bb...not retired today) singled into cf. First pitch. Amazing.
- Santo moved Garcia to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Gebhart struck out looking.
- Opel struck out swinging. Rupp couldn't hold onto the ball so had to throw down to 1b to complete the out.
- Texas down 2-7.
- 9th inning, Texas
- Lusson popped out to 1b in shallow rf.
- Weymouth singled up the middle. Rally time.
- Rowe struck out swinging. Ummm...that's not what I meant when I said that 'rally time' thing.
- Tim Maitland (pinch-hitting for Etier) tripled to the gap in left-center (that's what I meant with the 'rally time' thing), scoring Weymouth! Weymouth stole 2b on the 2nd pitch to Maitland, by the way. Craig Way said the outfielders collided on the play but they didn't. The center fielder dove for the ball and missed it but the left fielder stayed on his feet and ran after the ball.
- Walla struck out swinging.
- Texas loses 3-7.
Not pretty. Missouri, of course, is playing for their post-season lives. They absolutely had to win today. And, they have to win tomorrow and Saturday...and then on Sunday. I doubt it'll happen. But, they played a lot more like a team that had to win than the Horns did. The big thing to me, as I look through the score sheet are the three double plays turned by the Tigers. Every time the Horns got something going, poof. All over. Never mind. I fully expect Texas to beat the Aggies and the Red Raiders and show up in the Championship game on Sunday. I honestly doubt Missouri can keep it up and win out. If Texas is 2-1 on Saturday and Missouri has a loss, the Horns will move on to the Championship game. Seems like a very likely outcome.
Ah well. I guess we'll see soon enough. The Horns will face Texas Tech tomorrow at 3.
Hook 'em!
