Game 33: Kansas at Texas
Texas completed the sweep over Kansas this afternoon, winning 10-4. The highlight of the day was Kevin Lusson's grand slam in the 3rd. That was closely followed by a 2-run homer by Kevin Keyes in the 7th.
There was a very scary moment in the 1st inning when Tant Shepherd hit a line drive foul ball into the Kansas dugout. It sounded like it hit one of the Kansas players on his head. I sit over the Kansas dugout so couldn't see anything going on inside the dugout. Play did stop for a few minutes while they tended to the injured player (trainer, coach, ?, the person who was hit...we never did get an update and there's no mention of it on either school's official site). When Shepherd came up to bat again in the third we were very amused to see that most of the players at the dugout rail were wearing batting helmets and catcher's masks. Entertainingly, Shepherd actually did hit another foul ball into the dugout during his second plate appearance! Thankfully, this one did not hit anyone. Next time up, most of the players were down and away from the rail. Heh.
The line:
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kansas | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 8 | 1 |
Texas | 0 | 1 | 6 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | - | 10 | 11 | 0 |
And, here's how things played out this afternoon...
- Kansas, 1st inning
- Brandon Workman on the mound for Texas.
- Casey Lytle (rf) struck out looking.
- Robby Price (2b) drew a 4-pitch walk.
- Heere (cf) grounded into a 3-6 double play. On the play, Shepherd stepped on the 1b bag and then threw to 2b in time for Loy to tag Price out. Close play...very nicely done.
- Texas, 1st inning
- Brett Bollman on the mound for Kansas.
- Cohl Walla (lf) lined out to rf.
- Brandon Loy (ss) flew out to lf.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Kansas, 2nd inning
- Tony Thompson (3b) flew out to cf (high fly ball).
- Jimmy Waters (lf) flew out to cf.
- Brett Lisher (1b) struck out swinging.
- Texas, 2nd inning
- Cameron Rupp singled past ss up the middle.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) flew out to cf.
- Kevin Keyes doubled down the lf line, moving Rupp to 3b.
- Kevin Lusson grounded out to 2b, scoring Rupp and moving Keyes to 3b.
- Connor Rowe (cf) grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 1-0.
- Kansas, 3rd inning
- James Stanfield (c) singled into rf. Keyes dove for the ball and almost caught it but...alas. Luckily, he managed to keep the ball in front of him and Stanfield had no shot at advancing past 2b.
- Jake Marasco (dh) advanced Stanfield to 2b on a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Brandon Macias (ss) doubled off the base of the wall in lf, scoring Stanfield.
- Lytle lined out to 1b. Nice play by Shepherd.
- Price flew out to lf at the wall near the 375 sign.
- Game tied 1-1.
- Texas, 3rd inning
- Jordan Etier (2b) singled into cf.
- Walla moved Etier to 2b on a sac bunt (3-4).
- Loy flew out to cf. On the play, Etier tagged up and advanced to 3b. They did not repeat yesterday's mistake. Nice to see.
- Shepherd singled into rf, scoring Etier.
- Rupp singled into left-center, moving Shepherd to 2b. Moldenhauer was off with the pitch (hit and run, I'm guessing) but was unable to advance past 2b due to the fact that the ball got to the outfield so quickly.
- Moldenhauer drew a 4-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Lusson hit a grand slam down the rf line!
- Rowe singled past the ss into lf.
- Etier lined out to 3b.
- Texas up 7-1.
- Kansas, 4th inning
- 1-2-3: Here flew out to lf, Thompson grounded out to ss, and Waters struck out swinging after fouling off a few pitches.
- Texas up 7-1.
- Texas, 4th inning
- Kansas sent Tanner Poppe to the mound, replacing Bollman.
- Walla reached on a dropped 3rd strike. The ball went off the catcher's foot only 8 or so feet down the 3b line but he just couldn't find it. Passed ball. Ruled a passed ball.
- Loy singled up the middle, moving Walla (who never slowed down as he rounded 2b) to 3b.
- Loy stole 2b with Shepherd at the plate.
- Shepherd went on to draw a 4-pitch walk.
- Rupp grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Walla scored and Loy moved up to 3b on the play.
- Moldenhauer drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Keyes flew out to cf.
- Rather disappointing to only score 1 run after having the bases loaded with no outs.
- Texas up 8-1.
- Kansas, 5th inning
- Lisher singled into cf.
- Stanfield also singled into cf, moving Lisher to 2b.
- Marasco struck out swinging.
- Macias popped out to 2b.
- Whew. Two quick outs after those two singles. Yes! Only...
- Lytle singled into rf, scoring Lisher and moving Stanfield to 2b. 'Hate to say it but Keyes looked a little casual in rf on the play. It looked like he didn't think the runner would try for home and then it was too late to make a play at home.
- Insert visit to the mound.
- Price then lined into lf, for a single...loading the bases. Luckily, Walla charged and gunned the ball in. They almost had a play at 3b as Stanfield rounded 3b but he managed to get back before Lusson could get the ball to Loy covering 3b.
- Heere then lined out to rf. Keyes misjudged the play for a moment and moved back but then came back in to make the catch.
- Texas up 8-2.
- Texas, 5th inning
- Lusson lined into cf for a single and stole 2b with Rowe at the plate.
- Rowe struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Etier flew out to lf.
- Walla struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Texas up 8-2.
- Kansas, 6th inning
- Thompson hit a hiiiiiiigh flying homerun into the Kansas bullpen.
- Waters flew out to shallow cf.
- Lisher lined out to cf.
- Stanfield grounded out to 3b (unassisted).
- Texas up 8-3.
- Texas, 6th inning
- Second (and final) 1-2-3 inning of the day for Texas: Loy lined out to lf at the warning track, Shepherd struck out swinging (full count), and Rupp grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 8-3.
- Kansas, 7th inning
- Wherein Kansas starts to make things a little uncomfortable.
- Marasco grounded out to ss.
- Macias singled into lf.
- Lytle was hit by a pitch near his mid-section (2-1 count), moving Macias to 2b.
- Price reached on a 3-6 fielder's choice, moving Macias to 3b. The relay back to the pitcher covering 1b for the double play was close but definitely late.
- Heere drew a 4-pitch walk to load the bases.
- Which prompted a pitching change. Kendal Carrillo went to the mound, replacing Workman.
- Alas, Thompson drew a full-count 7-pitch walk to score Macias.
- Which prompted another pitching change. Andrew McKirahan went to the mound, replacing Carrillo. Going for the lefty-lefty match-up.
- Waters grounded out to 2b.
- Texas up 8-4. I start getting a wee bit nervous that Kansas is chipping away at the Texas lead with no response. Oh ye...er...me of little faith.
- Texas, 7th inning
- Russell Moldenhauer drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Keyes hit a 2-run shot down the lf line!
- Lusson lined out to cf.
- Rowe grounded out to ss.
- Etier reached on a catcher's interference.
- Walla lined out to ss.
- Texas up 10-4.
- Kansas, 8th inning
- 1-2-3...two pitchers involved, though.
- Also, Kyle Lusson went into rf, replacing Keyes.
- Lisher grounded out to 3b.
- Stanfield grounded out to 2b.
- Texas sent Stayton Thomas to the mound, replacing McKirahan.
- Marasco struck out swinging.
- Texas up 10-4.
- Texas, 8th inning
- Loy struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Shepherd drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Rupp reached on an infield single to ss, moving Shepherd to 2b. The shortstop had to slide as he fielded the ball and he tried to make the closer play at 2b but was just too late. He might've had a chance at 1b but he was on the ground and that throw would've been a miracle.
- Moldenhauer grounded out to 2b, moving Shepherd to 3b and Rupp to 2b. The ball was hit deep in the hole between 1b and 2b and Rupp had to hold up to let the ball pass. I'm pretty sure the second baseman actually had a play at 2b but his momentum was carrying him away from 2b and I doubt they could've turned the double play even if he had made the throw to 2b.
- Kyle Lusson flew out to shallow rf.
- Texas up 10-4.
- Kansas, 9th inning
- Another 1-2-3 inning...this one to end the game: Macias flew out to cf, Lytle grounded out to 2b, and Price flew out to cf.
- On the last play, Rowe made a great running catch over his shoulder at the wall in cf. Beautiful play.
- Texas wins 10-4! And sweeps the Jayhawks. Returning the favor from last year.
Brandon Workman got the win this afternoon, moving his record to 6-1. Nicely done.
It's great for the Horns to get another sweep under their belts. The Horns are sitting at the top of the Big 12 race with a winning percentage of .833. KSU is in 2nd place with .667, and the Aggies are in 3rd with .542. Everyone else is at .500 or below. Texas State comes to town on Tuesday and then the Horns host the Aggies on Friday before going to College Station for the Saturday and Sunday games. The weekend games will be on TV so check your cable/satellite listings.
