Game 10: Texas at Houston (Houston College Classic)
I wasn't able to watch most of today's game. I had to pick a friend up at the airport so the detailed game report only goes through the top of the 3rd. The game started 30 minutes late due to the previous game going into extra innings so I got to see even less of the game than I was hoping to see. 'Course it turned out that the game was over by the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning. I couldn't know that as I left for the airport, though!
The Astros were, once again, streaming the game so I did get to watch 'til I had to leave my folks' house for the airport. It turned out to be a heck of a pitching duel with Houston getting the better end of the deal as Texas lost 0-1.
The details, through the top of the third...
- Texas, Top of the 1st
- Michael Goodnight pitching for Houston.
- Tant Shepherd (1b) struck out swinging.
- Brandon Loy (ss) struck out looking.
- Cameron Rupp (c) drew a 5-pitch walk.
- Russell Moldenhauer (dh) singled up the middle, moving Rupp to 2b.
- Kevin Keyes (rf) struck out swinging. Too bad.
- Houston, Bottom of the 1st
- Brandon Workman pitching for Texas.
- Blake Kelso (ss) tripled to the cf/rf gap (1st pitch). Ouch.
- Then he scored on a wild pitch...first pitch to the next batter. The ball was down in the dirt and careened away from Rupp on the 1b side. He got to it and threw back to Workman covering the plate but just a little bit too late. Double ouch.
- Joel Ansley (cf) grounded out to ss.
- Matt Creel (rf) struck out looking.
- Caleb Ramsey (lf) grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- Texas down 0-1.
- Texas, Top of the 2nd
- Connor Rowe (cf) flew out to lf (at the wall, toward the cf gap).
- Kevin Lusson (3b) drew a walk (full count, I think). And, was then picked off (1-3) with Kyle Lusson at the plate. Sigh. How many pick-offs is that on Texas baserunners this year?
- Kyle Lusson (lf) drew a walk. Full count, I think. He then moved to 2b on a balk with Etier at the plate.
- Jordan Etier (2b) struck out swinging.
- Texas down 0-1.
- Houston, Bottom of the 2nd
- M.P. Cokinos (dh) grounded out to 3b. Nice play by Lusson at 3b to dive and stop the ball before jumping up to throw to 1b.
- Chris Wallace (c) grounded out to ss (1-6-3) off Workman's glove.
- Matt Murphy (1b) grounded out to 2b.
- Very nice and quick 1-2-3 for the Horns.
- Texas down 0-1.
- Texas, Top of the 3rd
- Shepherd flew out to lf.
- Loy singled up the middle and advanced to 2b on a balk with Rupp at the plate.
- Rupp struck out looking.
- Moldenhauer drew a full-count walk.
- Keyes flew out to straightaway cf at the warning track.
- Texas down 0-1.
- And, then I left for the airport.
I was actually able to listen to most of the rest of the game on the radio. And, not a whole lot happened. Here's the line:

Look at that. The teams combined for 7 hits. Amazing. Brandon Workman pitched a complete game, taking the loss for Texas. According to the Texas boxscore, he faced 27 batters, threw 93 pitches, gave up the 4 hits and 1 run (earned), walked 1, and struck out 7. There's no way Workman should be saddled with that loss. What he accomplished today really should be a lot more than a team needs out of their pitcher to win a game, doncha think? I hope the hitting comes around soon for the Horns. As a team, they're only batting .237. Opponents are batting .220, though, which is why they've got a 7-3 record. Scary stuff.
Ah well. The Horns play Missouri tomorrow at 11. The game will not count toward Big 12 totals. Hook 'em!
