Elsewhere, Day 4
The six regionals that went to a 7th game are all over. The Big 12 did not fare well:
- Clemson Regional: For a good part of the game, it looked like Oklahoma State would pull it off. They scored first and led 5-1 going into the bottom of the 7th. Clemson (home team) managed to score 3 in that inning and 2 more in the 8th while keeping OSU scoreless to win the regional and move on.
- Houston Regional: Rice scored 2 in the 1st. Kansas State managed to tie the game with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd but gave up a 6-spot in the 4th which pretty much did them in. KSU lost 4-13.
So, Texas is the only Big 12 team to advance to the next round.
And, what about that next round? Well, there were only three upsets when all the dust settled. OU and UC-Irvine lost their regionals yesterday. And, Georgia Tech lost today. So do all the #1 seeds automatically host the next round? I'm not sure; we'll know shortly. The NCAA was supposed to make an announcement at 11 o'clock (Eastern time, I believe) and there's still no news. The top 8 National Seeds (Texas, Cal State Fullerton, LSU, North Carolina, Arizona State, and Florida) will host by virtue of being top seeds. OU and UCI were in that group and lost. I rather expect that the "upsetters" will be the traveling teams come next week. But, you never know. At any rate, we do know who will be playing:
- The "1-4-5-8" side of the CWS bracket:
- (1) Texas will host TCU
- (4) North Carolina will host East Carolina
- (5) Arizona State will host Clemson
- (8) Florida will host Southern Miss (#3 seed at Georgia Tech regional)
- The "2-3-6-7" side of the CWS bracket:
- (2) Cal State Fullerton will host Louisville
- (3) LSU will host Rice
- (6) Ole Miss will likely host Virgina (#2 seed at UCI regional)
- (7) Florida State will likely host Arkansas (#2 seed at OU regional)
I'll be back with more info when I have it.
UPDATE. I predicted correctly. Ole Miss and Florida State have been selected to host the next round.
UPDATE #2. The teams on the "1-4-5-8" side of the CWS will play their super regionals on Saturday through Monday. The teams on the "2-3-6-7" side will play on Friday through Sunday.
