Game 54: Texas at Kansas State (Big 12 Tournament)
I watched the Big 12 Internet stream (audio from Sirius-XM...yawn) of the game. Going in, we knew the winner of today's game would make it into the Championship game tomorrow. Good times.
I guess Texas won the toss since they played home team.
Today's starting line-ups:
| Kansas State | Texas |
|---|---|
|
1 Adam Muenster, dh 2 Carter Jurica, 2b 3 Nick Martini, lf 4 Justin Bloxom, 1b 5 Jason King, 3b 6 Drew Biery, ss 7 Jordan Cruz, rf 8 Rob Vaughn, c 9 Dane Yelovich, cf - Todd Vogel, p |
1 Michael Torres, 3b 2 Travis Tucker, 2b 3 Brandon Belt, 1b 4 Russell Moldenhauer, dh 5 Cameron Rupp, c 6 Brandon Loy, ss 7 Kevin Keyes, rf 8 David Hernandez, lf 9 Connor Rowe, cf - Taylor Jungmann, p |
Here's how things played out:
- 1st inning, Kansas State
- Taylor Jungmann (rhp) on the mound for Texas.
- Muenster grounded out to 2b (full count).
- Jurica singled past 3b into lf.
- After Jungmann threw 3 balls to start off Muenster, 2 balls to start off Jurica, and 2 more balls to start off Martini, Rupp went out to the mound to have a short talk with his pitcher. Jungmann threw a couple of tosses over to Belt and then a strike to Martini.
- On the next pitch, Jurica took off. The throw from Rupp hit him and went on into cf. Jurica advanced to 3b on the throwing error by the catcher.
- Martini went on to ground out to 3b with the infield pulled in. Jurica did not have a chance to advance.
- Bloxom grounded out to 3b.
- Whew.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Todd Vogel (rhp) on the mound for Kansas State.
- Torres singled past the diving ss into cf.
- Tucker moved Torres to 2b on a 3-4 sac bunt. Tucker almost beat out the throw for a bunt single.
- Belt popped out to shallow lf near the line.
- Moldenhauer struck out swinging.
- 2nd inning, Kansas State
- King flew out to cf.
- Biery grounded out to 3b.
- Cruz reached on a full-count walk and then stole 2b on the 3rd pitch to Vaughn.
- Vaughn struck out looking. Thankfully. On the play, Cruz broke for 3b on the pitch. Rupp threw wide and past 3b. Cruz jumped up and appeared to score. But, since Vaughn had been called out: no error, no score. Yikes.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Rupp doubled off the lf wall. The idiots doing the Big 12 stream spent his entire at-bat talking to a girl about a Chick-fil-A promotion. Baseball anyone? Geesh. Idiots. Thankfully, the video (but not the audio) did switch over just in time to see the action.
- Loy moved Rupp to 3b on a 5-3 sac bunt. He almost beat out the throw. Nicely done.
- Keyes struck out looking (1-2 count). Ouch.
- Hernandez grounded out to ss.
- 3rd inning, Kansas State
- Yelovich singled into cf.
- Muenster singled through the left side, moving Yelovich to 2b.
- Which prompted a visit to the mound by Skip Johnson.
- Texas sent Preston Clark into the field for Rupp. Rupp apparently hurt his hand on the throw down to 3b on that play at the end of the Kansas half of the 2nd. According to LiveStats, this is when the substitution took place. The satellite radio and Big 12 video folks did not seem to notice the substitution. I didn't realize Clark was in the game until sometime in the 4th and had to figure out when he'd entered the game. Now that I think on it...this was when it happened because the umpire allowed Jungmann to throw 4 additional "warm-up" pitches after the visit to the mound and the satellite radio guys had no idea why he was doing that. Obviously, the warm-up pitches were for the replacement catcher coming in on an injury substitution.
- Jurica popped a bunt up in the infield...fielded by the pitcher.
- Martini popped out to ss in shallow lf.
- Bloxom lined out to lf.
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Okay. I gave in. At this point I decided to listen to Craig and Keith on the radio and just refer to the video when I wanted to see a replay. The radio was running 10-12 seconds ahead of the streaming video. It's one thing to listen to the satellite radio guys when you don't know much about the teams playing and are busy doing other things but it's something else entirely when you're watching the game and trying to stay on top of things.
- Rowe flew out to rf.
- Torres grounded out to 1b (pitcher covering).
- Tucker flew out to cf.
- 4th inning, Kansas State
- King struck out swinging.
- Biery drew a full-count walk.
- Cruz hit into a 6-3 double play. Loy fielded, stepped on 2b, and threw to 1b for the 2nd out.
- By my count, Jungmann had thrown 70 pitches to this point.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Belt doubled into right center.
- Moldenhauer grounded out to 1b (pitcher covering) to move Belt to 3b.
- Clark hit a sac fly to rf, scoring Belt.
- Loy grounded out to ss.
- By my count, Vogel had thrown 45 pitches to this point.
- Texas up 1-0.
- 5th inning, Kansas State
- Vaughn grounded out to 1b unassisted.
- Yelovich was hit by a 2-0 pitch (front shoulder).
- Muenster singled through the left side, moving Yelovich to 3b.
- On the first pitch to Jurica, Muenster stole 2b.
- Jurica grounded out to ss. On the slow grounder, Yelovich scored and Muenster moved up to 3b.
- Martini reached on a fielding error by ss. Loy charged the chopper and tried to field but the ball bounced off his glove into cf. Muenster scored.
- Martini was picked off (1-3) with Bloxom at the plate!
- Texas down 1-2.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Keyes doubled into right center.
- Hernandez moved Keyes to 3b with a 1-3 sac bunt.
- Rowe singled through the left side, scoring Keyes!
- Torres flew out to cf.
- Tucker flew out to rf.
- Game tied 2-2.
- 6th inning, Kansas State
- Bloxom struck out swinging.
- King singled into cf.
- Biery flew out to right center. Rowe made a great dive to catch the ball and rob Biery of a single. Keyes was right there to back him up so the Horns would've kept Biery to a single even if he'd missed the ball.
- Cruz grounded out to 2b.
- 96 pitches for Jungmann by my count.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Matt Applegate (rhp) went to the mound, replacing Vogel (who'd thrown 60 pitches by my count).
- Belt drew a full-count walk.
- With 2 balls thrown to Moldenhauer, the Jayhawks sent Marshall (rhp) to the mound (replacing Applegate).
- Moldenhauer bunted the first pitch he saw from Marshall down the 1b line (3-unassisted sac bunt), moving Belt to 2b.
- Clark grounded out to the pitcher. Belt moved up to 3b on the play.
- Loy singled up the middle, scoring Belt.
- With Keyes at the plate, the Jayhawks picked Loy off at 1b (1-3-6).
- Texas up 3-2.
- 7th inning, Kansas State
- Vaughn reached on a throwing error by ss and moved to 2b when the ball sailed into the stands.
- Yelovich bunted a 1-2 pitch foul for a strikeout. He squared to bunt on all four pitches.
- Muenster lined out to ss for a double play. Loy caught the liner and threw to 2b to beat the runner from 2b back to the bag.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Thomas Rooke (lhp) went to the mound for KSU, replacing Marshall.
- Keyes struck out swinging.
- Hernandez popped out to the ss at the lf line.
- Rowe popped out to shallow rf.
- 8th inning, Kansas State
- Kyle Lusson and Tim Maitland went into rf and lf, respectively, for the Horns...replacing Keyes and Hernandez.
- Jurica popped out to ss behind 2b.
- Martini grounded out to ss.
- Bloxom was hit by a pitch (low on the leg).
- Which prompted a pitching change. Austin Wood (lhp) went to the mound, replacing Jungmann. Jungmann threw 123 pitches by my count. Fantastic job, Taylor!!!
- King worked the count full and then lined out to Loy! Terrific jump and snag by Loy! Purty.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Torres struck out looking.
- Tucker doubled off the third baseman into the lf corner. Keith Moreland thought it should probably have been scored as an error on the third baseman.
- Belt was intentionally walked.
- Tant Shepherd was announced as the pinch-hitter for Texas (hitting for Moldenhauer). Which prompted the Jayhawks to change pitchers. James Allen (rhp) went to the mound, replacing Rooke.
- Which prompted Texas to send Kevin Lusson to the plate (replacing Shepherd).
- Kevin Lusson struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Clark fell behind 0-2, worked the count full, and drew a 7-pitch walk to load the bases!
- Loy reached on an infield single to ss! Tucker scored. Bases still loaded.
- Kyle Lusson grounded out to ss.
- Texas up 4-2.
- 9th inning, Kansas State
- Biery reached on a fielding error by ss. The ball went under Loy's glove and into left center.
- Vaughn singled over 1b into rf.
- Yelovich struck out swinging!!
- Texas wins 4-2.
Post-game comments by Coach Garrido (very paraphrased) in the radio interview with Keith Moreland:
That was a great college baseball game. Of course, the unexpected had to take place as Brandon Loy doubled his error count. But, I'm proud of him, he didn't get his head down. He shook it off and got back into his timing. Jungmann is really a good pitcher. He has great presence on the mound. Every day at the ballpark is a learning experience from him and he really loves it. We did the right thing at the right time...which is what usually determines the winner in a baseball game. Brandon Workman will likely be the starter tomorrow. That may change, though. 40 wins!
The line:
| R | H | E | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kansas State | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | - | 2 | 6 | 0 | ||||||||
| Texas | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | x | - | 4 | 8 | 4 | ||||||||
Brandon Loy did not have a very good game. He committed 3 errors and was picked off 1b in the 6th. But, as Coach Garrido said, he didn't let it get him down. He kept playing his game and made a few really nice defensive plays despite his struggles. And, he drove in the final two runs of the game for Texas. Nice going. Taylor Jungmann had his longest career outing, pitching into the 8th inning while limiting a very good offense to 5 hits...all of them singles. Very nicely done. The Horns now play in tomorrow's Tournament Championship game. Opponent to be determined round about 10 o'clock tonight. Hook 'em!
UPDATE. I forgot to update Rupp's injury info. Coach Garrido said he hit the hitter's bat on that throw in the 2nd and opened a cut on one of the fingers on his throwing hand (the middle finger, I think). The cut made it difficult for him to get a good grip on the ball so he was replaced. I'm guessing he may be out for tomorrow's game but should be fine for Regional action. That's just my guess, though.
