Game 36: Oklahoma at Texas
Texas beat Oklahoma 6-2 to complete a sweep of today's double header. Very nice. Happily, the 2nd game of the day wasn't nearly as eventful as the 1st. Heh.
By the way, Texas did hold a ceremony between the two games to officially retire #21 again, this time in Greg Swindell's name. He was there with two of his daughters and Coach Gus. He gave a nice (but a wee bit long) talk. It was nice to see and hear him.
I failed to mention the weather in my post about the first game. The temperature got up to 82 °F in the first game, was at 80 at the start of the second game, and got down to about 77 by the end of the second game. There was almost no wind. The sun came out about half-way through the first game and, really, it would've been hard to have better weather.
Starting line-ups for today's second game:
| Oklahoma | Texas |
|---|---|
|
1 Jamie Johnson, cf 2 Matt Harughty, 2b 3 Bryant Hernandez, ss 4 Aaron Baker, 1b 5 Garret Buechele, 3b 6 Cameron Seitzer 7 J.T. Wise, c 8 Casey Johnson, lf 9 Chris Ellison, rf - Stephen Porlier, p |
1 Travis Tucker, 2b 2 Michael Torres, dh 3 Brandon Belt, 1b 4 Tant Shepherd, lf 5 Kevin Keyes, rf 6 Cameron Rupp, dh 7 Brandon Loy, ss 8 Preston Clark, c 9 Connor Rowe, cf - Cole Green, p |
Again, I don't think I have the energy to do a full write-up. So...here are some highlights:
- Cole Green started and went 4.1 innings. He gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits (including 1 double) with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 1 hit batter. He faced 19 and threw 82 pitches by my count. No decision.
- Austin Dicharry threw 2.2 for the win to improve his record to 5-1. He also gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits (all singles). He threw 5 strikeouts and walked 1. He faced 11 batters and threw 47 pitches by my count.
- Austin Wood, rather surprisingly, closed out the game, throwing the final 2 innings without giving up any additional runs. He gave up 1 hit (a double) and threw 4 strikeouts (no walks). He faced 7 batters and threw 32 pitches by my count. No save but he did up his career game appearances number to 99. He's now 4th in line behind Randy Boone (106 appearances), J. Brent Cox (106), and Houston Street (105). I'm thinking he'll be all alone in first place very very soon.
- OU scored single runs in the 5th and 6th:
- 5th: C. Johnson doubled to cf, moved to 3b on a ground out to 2b, and scored on a single to right-center by J. Johnson.
- 6th: Baker reached on a perfect bunt down the 3b line, moved to 2b on a ground out to 3b, stayed at 2b when the next batter struck out, and then scored on a single hit hard past the short stop into cf.
- Texas scored 1 in the 1st:
- Torres reached on a 1-out double to rf.
- Belt fought off a bazillion pitches and then flew out to lf in foul territory.
- Torres stole 3b with Shepherd at the plate and then scored when Shepherd singled into cf.
- Keyes singled up the middle, moving Shepherd to 3b, but they were stranded at 1b and 3b when Rupp flew out to rf (again in foul territory).
- Texas scored 2 in the 2nd:
- Clark reached on a 1-out single off the pitcher and then moved to 2b on a wild pitch with Rowe at the plate.
- Rowe singled to lf, scoring Clark.
- Alas, Rowe was then caught stealing with Tucker at the plate.
- Tucker reached on an error by 3b. He hit a hard grounder to 3b and the ball trickled into foul territory. I think I would've probably ruled it an infield hit but the official scorer put E5 up on the board before in no time at all. Ah well.
- Tucker stole 2b with Torres at the plate.
- Torres singled to the rf corner, scoring Tucker.
- Which prompted a pitching change for OU. The starter only went 1.2 innings. Wow.
- Belt flew out to cf, ending the inning.
- Texas scored 1 in the 3rd:
- Shepherd singled to the shortstop and moved to 2b on a sac bunt by Keyes to the pitcher down the 1b line.
- Shepherd moved to 3b on a wild pitch with Rupp at the plate and then scored when Rupp singled to cf.
- Loy reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice and Clark grounded out to 3b to end the inning.
- Texas scored 2 in the 5th:
- Belt singled into lf.
- Shepherd and Keyes followed with fly outs to lf and cf, respectively.
- Rupp watched 5 pitches to work the count full and took the 6th pitch for a long ride over the lf fence. Purrrrrrty.
- Loy walked and stole 2b but was stranded there when Clark flew out to cf.
- Texas, sadly, went 3-up/3-down in the 4th, 7th, and 8th. Torres reached on a 2-out infield single in the 6th but was stranded at 2b (where he'd moved on a wild pitch).
And, that was about it. One other thing I forgot to note in my game report for the first game of today's double-header: Skip Johnson coached 1b in both games. I have no idea where Tommy Nicholson was.
Here's the line (from GameTracker):

Today's wins move Texas to the top spot in the Big 12 standings. Game 3 tomorrow at 1. Hook 'em!
