Game 30: Texas at Nebraska

Sadly, I was working away and forgot about the game 'til almost 4:30. The 9th inning was just getting under way with Texas in the lead 7-4.

These were the starting line-ups:

Texas Nebraska
1 Travis Tucker, 2b
2 Michael Torres, 3b
3 Brandon Belt, 1b
4 Russell Moldenhauer, dh
5 Tant Shepherd, lf
6 Kevin Keyes, rf
7 Cameron Rupp, c
8 Brandon Loy, ss
9 Connor Rowe, cf
- Chance Ruffin, p
1 1 Kyle Bubak, 2b
2 Jake Mort, 3b
3 Adam Bailey, rf
4 Tyler Farst, 1b
5 Jeff Tezak, dh
6 Nick Sullivan, lf
7 DJ Belfonte, cf
8 Cody Neer, c
9 Ben Kline, ss
- Sean Yost, p

So, not much of a report from me today. Looking at the LiveStats page, I see that Texas scored 3 in the 2nd: Shepherd hit a 1-out homer; Keyes walked; and Rupp hit a 2-run homer. 'Sounds like the bats are still in working order.

Texas scored 2 more in the top of the 4th: Shepherd singled but was picked off at 1b; Keyes tripled and scored on a throwing error by ss (from the post-game report on the radio, it sounded like the relay throw went into the dugout); and Rupp walked, moved to 3b on a single by Loy, then scored on a sac fly by Rowe.

Texas gave up 2 in the bottom of the 4th: Farst walked (4 pitches); Tezak walked (5 pitches); Sullivan reached on an error by 1b (which scored Farst and moved Tezak to 3b); and Belfonte singled (scoring Tezak). Texas then induced a double play and ground out to get out of the inning.

The Horns gave up 2 more in the bottom of the 5th: Bailey reached on a 2-out fielding error by 2b; Farst was hit by a pitch, moving Bailey to 2b; and Tezak singled and some sort of hell broke loose on an error by lf (both runners scored and Tezak reached 2b). At this point, Texas sent Shinaberry to the mound for Ruffin. And, he got the final batter of the inning to ground out to ss.

Texas scored a single run in the 6th: Keyes singled to cf, moved to 2b on a sac bunt by Rupp, and to 3b on a wild pitch; and after Loy struck out, Rowe singled to score Keyes.

And, the Horns scored one more in the top of the 7th: Torres singled to cf, stole 2b, and scored on a double by Belt. Yep, the bats are still swinging.

In the top of the 9th (the only inning I heard), Torres reached on a 1-out single blooped into shallow lf. He was erased on a fielder's choice (Belt batting). David Hernandez (pinch-hitting for Moldenhauer) grounded out to ss.

With the Horns up 7-4 going into the bottom of the 9th and Taylor Jungmann on the mound in relief, the Cornhuskers went:

So, Texas won 7-5. Craig Way said it was the first time Texas beat Nebraska in a series opener in Lincoln in 12 years. Nice. Keith Shinaberry, who went 0.2 innings in relief and threw a whopping 9 pitches, got the win! Heh. Austin Wood got his 7th save of the season. Sean Yost took the loss for the Huskers.

Here's the line (from Nebraska's LiveStats):

They start the 2nd game of the day at 6:00. Hook 'em, Horns!
