It's Brandon Workman week!
Brandon Workman is getting accolades galore after throwing that no-hitter on Sunday:
- Big 12 Pitcher of the Week - "Workman allowed just two walks and one player to reach base on an error, facing the minimum 27 batters to record the 21st no-hitter in UT history. He also posted the conference's only complete game shutout on the week, while pacing the Big 12 in ERA and opponent batting average. The Bowie, Texas hurler fanned 10 Penn State batters, one shy of his career high. On the season, Workman has yet to give up a run and has only surrendered two hits and two walks over 16.0 innings."
- Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger's National Player of the Week - "Workman recorded the 21st no-hitter in Texas Longhorns' history during a 9-0, 9-inning win over Penn State. He allowed just three base runners in the game, two on walks and one on an error while striking out 10 batters."
- Recruting Closer Pitcher of the Week - "Workman threw a no-hitter against Penn State. He walked only 2 batters and struck out 10. It was the 2nd time in as many weeks this year that a Big XII pitcher has thrown a no-hitter."
- College Baseball Foundation and Diamond Sports National Allstar Lineup - "Workman recorded the 21st no-hitter in UT history against Penn State on Sunday afternoon. Workman had 10 strikeouts in the 9-0 victory. He also posted the Big 12's only complete game shutout for the week."
- National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Pro-Line Athletic National Co-Pitcher of the Week - "Workman allowed just two walks and one player to reach base on an error, facing the minimum 27 batters to record the 21st no-hitter in UT history. Three players reached base, with Workman issuing two walks and one batter reaching on an error, but a double play ground out and two faulty stolen base attempts erased them from the books. The Bowie, Texas, hurler fanned 10 Penn State batters, one shy of his career high. On the season, Workman has yet to give up a run and has only surrendered two hits and two walks over 16 innings." (The award is shared with Ryan Berry from Rice who shut-out TAMU while allowing 2 hits over the weekend.)
Way to go, Brandon!
UPDATE. I meant to link to this nice article from the Daily Texan earlier and forgot: No-hitter caps Penn State sweep by Austin Talbert.
