Game 20: Texas at Texas Tech

Texas went into Dan Law Field and took care of business this evening, beating the Red Raiders 22-6. Wow. The line:

RHE
Texas 226 004 035 - 22222
Tech 032 010 000 - 6110

Again I say: wow. I didn't hear all of the game and, in fact, missed the two errors. I have no idea what happened there. But, I did hear Kevin Keyes and Tant Shepherd hit back-to-back homeruns in the 9th (1st homerun of the year for both of them). Michael Torres hit another (his 2nd of the year) a few batters later. Every Texas player that made a plate appearance got at least one hit. Michael Torres, Jordan Danks, and Tant Shepherd paced the team with 5, 4, and 3 hits apiece. Cameron Rupp scored 4 runs. Michael Torres, Preston Clark, and Tant Shepherd each scored 3. Michael Torres and Jordan Danks had 5 RBIs each. Austin Wood made the start. He went 2+ innings (he pitched into trouble in the 3rd) and gave up 5 runs (2 unearned) on 7 hits with 2 doubles and a homerun while striking out 2 and walking 2. Keith Shinaberry replaced Austin on the mound in the 3rd and got a couple of ground outs before giving way to Brandon Workman. Brandon went on to pitch 5.1 innings (he went through the end of the 8th) and got the win. He gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits (including a double) while striking out 6 and walking 2. Hunter Harris pitched the 9th. He gave up a single but only faced 3 as the Horns turned a nice 5-4-3 double play to end the game. Of particular note: the Horns kept Roger Kieschnick off the basepads. I did hear him throw someone out at 3b on a single to rf. He's good. [Added later for clarity: Kieschnick threw out a runner who was at 1b when the single was hit to rf; the runner tried to push his luck and paid the price.] Kyle Russell did not play again tonight. Preston Clark started in rf and Russell Moldenhauer in lf. Kevin Keyes went into the game in lf (defensive substitution) in the 8th. I was very happy that he got that homerun. It came against a righty. Excellent.

Coach Garrido's post-game comments to Bill Little (as best I can remember them): He was very glad the players stayed with the hitting plan they had in place. They scored every inning they possibly could. Brandon Workman turned the game around when he went in. Coach Garrido was happy with how well the defense played in the 9th, getting those three hard outs instead of relaxing and easing up. If the team can keep this up, they'll do very well.

I sure do hope the Horns keep it up. Hook 'em!
