Game 12: Stanford at Texas

Texas couldn't quite do enough to pull off a win in the 2nd game of the Stanford series and ended up losing 5-6. The difference maker, alas, was a 2-run homerun by Stanford catcher Jason Castro in the 7th inning. He hit a 2-run homer late in Friday's game but that one was a bit too little, too late for the Cardinal. That was not the case, alas, in Saturday's game. The weather, by the way, was quite a bit nicer than in Friday's game. It was still cool and a little windy...but it wasn't too bad.

Kenn Kasparek made his 3rd start of the year. He threw 4 innings and gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits (4 singles and a ground-rule double) with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Kyle Walker started the 5th and had a bad day. He faced 5 and gave up 2 earned runs on 2 walks and 2 singles while getting only one out. Keith Shinaberry went in with one out in the 5th and faced his customary 1 batter. He coaxed a 4-6-3 double play out of the lone batter he faced. Marcus Tackett pitched the 6th and 7th, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 1 strikeout. Alas, one of the hits was the aforementioned 2-run homer which saddled him with the loss. Stayton Thomas threw the last 2 innings and faced the minimum 6 batters. He got 5 ground outs and 1 fly out to cf. Discounting Kyle's outing, it was actually not a bad day for Texas pitching. Alas, the offense did not manage to keep up.

Offensively, the Horns scored single runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th. They scored a couple in the 6th to take their first lead of the day but were not able to hold on. Travis Tucker and Jordan Danks were the only players with multiple hits. Travis went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, a run batted in, and 2 stolen bases. Jordan went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, and a strikeout. Russell Moldenhauer went 1-for-4 with a single and 2 driven in. The Horns stranded 6 runners, 5 in scoring position. Four of those 5 runners got into scoring position with only 1 out. Opportunities sadly wasted.
