Game 35: UT-San Antonio at Texas
For some reason I kept thinking about something I heard Spike Dykes say on the radio several years ago. He was asked what he thought about the upcoming game and he said:
"It's gonna be a slobber-knocker out there."
I laughed and laughed. And, never forgot that saying. And, I always hear it in his voice in my head. I'd never heard such a thing. And, frankly, have not heard it again. But, last night's game probably qualifies as a slobber-knocker. Probably. I'm not really versed in the finer points of the "slobber-knocker" but I'm guessing last night's game just might've been one.
Texas won 14-9. They fell behind early (0-4 in the 3rd) but scored 7 in the bottom of the 3rd to take the lead. Four of those 7 came on a grand slam by Bradley Suttle! The Horns had a 10-5 lead in the 6th when UTSA's Michael Rockett hit his own grand slam to bring the Raodrunners within 1. Wow. I don't believe I've ever seen two grand slams hit in one game. Grand slams are pretty rare. Two in one game? Wow.
And, here's how things went:
- 1st inning, UTSA
- Kyle Walker got the start for UT.
- Keithly flew out to rf.
- Palincsar struck out.
- Rockett grounded out to 2b.
- 1st inning, Texas
- Brannon on the mound for UTSA. Texas had a bit of a different lineup. Brett Lewis and Chais Fuller were in at c and ss.
- Jordan Danks flew out to lf.
- Chance Wheeless flew out to lf.
- Kyle Russell flew out to cf.
- 2nd inning, UTSA
- Lockwood grounded out to 2b.
- Saltzgaber struck out looking.
- Etheredge hit a solo home run, his 6th of the year.
- Ponza walked on 4 pitches.
- Allen grounded out to 3b.
- 2nd inning, Texas
- Bradley Suttle singled up the middle.
- Russell Moldenhauer struck out looking.
- Travis Tucker flew out to cf.
- Chais Fuller flew out to cf.
- 3rd inning, UTSA
- Davis popped out to sb.
- Keithly singled to cf.
- Palincsar singled past ss into cf.
- Rockett singled to lf (rbi).
- Lockwood walked (full count) to load the bases.
- Hunter Harris went to the mound.
- Saltzgaber singled the first pitch he saw to lf (2 rbi).
- Etheredge struck out.
- Ponza popped out to 2b.
- Yikes. Texas behind 4-0. That's not how it's supposed to be, is it?
- 3rd inning, Texas
- Brett Lewis walked (full-count).
- Nick Peoples reached on a bunt down the 3b line.
- Danks moved the runners to 2b and 3b on a sac bunt (also down the 3b line).
- Chance Wheeless singled on a flare to cf (rbi) and advanced to 2b on the throw. Runners at 2b and 3b again.
- Kyle Russell walked to load the bases.
- After a conference on the mound, Bradley Suttle hit that grand slam I mentioned over the rf fence. On an 0-2 pitch, by the way.
- Russell Moldenhauer singled the first pitch he saw up the middle.
- Travis Tucker singled up the middle. The ball glanced off the second baseman's glove. It was almost a double play ball. Instead, the Horns had runners at the corners.
- Blakley went in to pitch.
- Travis stole 2b on the first pitch Blakley threw.
- Chais Fuller hit a sac fly to rf. Russell scored and Tucker advanced to 3b.
- Brett (10th batter of the inning!) singled up the middle (rbi).
- Nick grounded out to 2b. Wow. 7 runs scored.
- 4th inning, UTSA
- Allen struck out.
- Davis walked.
- Keithly singled. Runners at 1b and 2b.
- Palincsar grounded out to 2b. Very nice play by Travis Tucker to scoop the ball up and throw to 1b in time.
- Rockett popped out to 1b.
- 4th inning, Texas
- Jordan Danks struck out looking.
- Chance Wheeless hit a double past the first baseman.
- Kyle Russell hit his 18th home run of the year (2 rbi). The ball landed in the Texas bullpen.
- Bradley Suttle was hit by a pitch. The ball his his back foot (his left, he was batting left-handed) pretty hard and I'm guessing he's got a bad bruise today.
- Russell Moldenhauer reached on a fielder's choice (3-1).
- Travis Tucker singled up the middle.
- Ruffin replaced Blakley on the mound.
- Chais Fuller flew out to cf.
- 5th inning, UTSA
- Clay Van Hook went to 3b for Texas (replacing Bradley Suttle, hit by pitch in the previous half-inning).
- Lockwood grounded out to 3b. Nice play by new 3b Clay!
- Saltzgaber singled to the cf/rf gap. The ball just cleared a leaping Travis Tucker's glove. Just barely. Kyle Russell did a fantastic job of running the ball down and keeping the batter from advancing to 2b. Wow.
- Etheredge grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Purty.
- 5th inning, Texas
- Brett Lewis flew out to cf. Nice play by Rockett in cf.
- Nick Peoples hit what should've been a single to lf but he turned on the after-burners and tore into 2b. Wow. He was running sooooooo fast! Heh.
- Jordan Danks singled to cf (rbi).
- Chance Wheeless flew out to lf.
- Kyle Russell flew out to rf.
- 6th inning, UTSA
- In which, UTSA scares us all just a wee bit.
- Ponza hit a hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh home run into the Texas bullpen.
- It was about this point that we could see Michael Demperio (!) and Drew Bishop warming up in the Texas bullpen. Austin Wood had been up earlier but it was Michael and Drew at this point.
- Allen flew out to lf.
- Davis reached on an infield single to 2b.
- Keithly singled to lf. Runners at 1b and 2b.
- Michael and Drew were still throwing in the bullpen. Skip went to the mound and called in the lefty. What? Both guys throwing are right-handed. And, in trots Austin Wood. My guess is that he was throwing with Michael and we couldn't see him behind the wall. I have no idea if the folks on the 1b side of the stands can see the catchers. We can't from my seats. Anyway, Skip tricked us all!
- Palincsar walked on a full-count 8-pitch ball to load the bases.
- Rockett his the first pitch he saw over the wall in front of the scoreboard. Grand slam #2. Wow. His second home run of the year. Wow. Stunned silence. Texas up 10-9.
- Lockwood struck out looking.
- Saltzgaber flew out to rf.
- 6th inning, Texas
- Proudfoot went in to pitch.
- Clay Van Hook popped out on a little blooper to 3b.

- 7th inning, UTSA
- Joseph Krebs went in for Austin on the mound.
- Etheredge grounded out to 3b.
- Ponza reached on an infield single to 3b. Clay made a great play to keep the ball from going into the lf corner.
- Allen grounded into a double play. On the play, Travis Tucker fielded the ball, stepped on the 2b bag, and threw to 1b. Purty.
- 7th inning, Texas
- Clint Stubbs (pinch-hitting for Chais Fuller) tripled to the lf/cf gap.
- Brett Lewis reached on an error by rf. The right fielder made a long run and almost caught a high fly ball hit down the line but the ball bounced off his glove and rolled to the fence near the tarp. Clint scored and Brett made it all the way to 3b.
- Nick Peoples reached on an infield single to the pitcher. Runners at the corners
- Jordan Danks hit a sac fly to cf (rbi).
- Mackey replaced Proudfoot on the mound.
- Chance Wheeless struck out.
- With Kyle Russell at the plate, Mackey picked Nick off at 1b. Ouch.
- 8th inning, UTSA
- Josh Prince went in at ss.
- Davis flew out to rf.
- Keithly grounded out to 3b. Clay made a fantastic diving catch to stop the ball, jumped up, and threw Keithly out. Wow!!
- Palincsar hit a bloop single to lf and then advanced to 2b on a balk.
- Rockett grounded out to 2b.
- 8th inning, Texas
- Kyle Russell struck out looking to start things off.
- Clay Van Hook walked (full count).
- Russell Moldenhauer singled to lf.
- Calhoon replaced Mackey on the mound and Michael Demperio went in to pinch run for Russell.
- Travis Tucker struck out.
- Josh Prince struck out swinging. On a wild pitch. The ball went all the way to the wall. The runners had broken on the pitch so 1b was open. All runners safe, bases loaded.
- Brewtt Lewis walked (rbi).
- Nick Peoples walked on 4 pitches (rbi).

Whew.
